foot. Every shoe in our catalog is designed with extra added depth for functional and accommodative orthoses.

As every person’s foot differs, so do the shapes (otherwise known as ‘lasts’) of the different shoes

represented within these pages. This is why you will see different versions of similar styles in this catalog.

When applicable, our highly trained and courteous staff closely examine each order, assessing

the choices selected to be the best solution for each individual. The width, the length and the

shape of the foot are all taken into consideration. Tenderfeet Shoes offers a complete

Recognizing Common Foot ProblemsBunions

The common bunion is a localized areaof enlargement of the inner portion of thejoint at the base of the big toe. Theenlargement actually representsadditional bone formation, often incombination with a misalignment of thebig toe. The normal position of the big toe(straight forward) becomes outward-directed toward the smaller toes. Theenlarged joint at the base of the big toe(the first metatarsophalangeal joint) canbecome inflamed with redness,tenderness, and pain. A small fluid-filledsac (bursa) adjacent to the joint can alsobecome inflamed (bursitis) leading toadditional swelling,redness, and pain.

A less common bunion is located at thejoint atthe base of the smallest (fifth) toe.This bunion is sometimes referred to as atailor's bunion or a bunionette. It is thoughtthat bunions are often the cause ofwearing footwear too tightly. Bunionsthat occur require footwear with a wideand deep toe box to accommodate theaffected joint.

Hammertoes

Hammertoe is a condition in which thetoe is bent in a claw-like position. It canbe present in more than one toe but ismost common in the second toe.

Hammertoe is described as a deformityin which the toes bend downward withthe toe joint usually enlarged. Over time,the joint enlarges and stiffens as it rubsagainst shoes. Other foot structuresinvolved include the overlying skin andblood vessels and nerves connected tothe involved toes. Footwear that havewide and deep toe boxes are beneficialfor this condition. Soft leather uppersand/or neoprene materials also need tobe taken into consideration.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatorycondition caused by excessive wear tothe plantar fascia of the foot. The painis often felt on the underside of the heel,and is often felt with the greatest intensitywith the first steps of the day. It iscommonly associated with long periodsof weight bearing. Footwear with littleor no arch support and inactivity are alsoassociated with the condition.

Patients should avoid open-back shoes,sandals, and flip-flops. Care should betaken to wear supportive and stableshoes as well as custom accommodativeinserts.

Callusing

Calluses occur most often on the heelsand balls of the feet. However, they candevelop on any part of the foot that issubject to repeated pressure or irritation.Calluses are usually more than an inchwide They generally don't hurt unlesspressure is applied.

Calluses form to prevent injury to skinthat is repeatedly pinched, rubbed, orirritated. The most common causes are:shoes that are too tight or too loose, orhave very high heels; tight socks orstockings, deformed toes or walkingdown a long hill, or standing or walkingon a hard surface for a long time.

Jobs or hobbies that cause steady orrecurring pressure on the same spot ofthe foot can also cause calluses.Accommodative inserts may help reducepressure that will help calluses lessenand/or diminish.


Heel Pain

Every mile you walk puts 60 tons ofstress on each foot. Your feet can handlea heavy load, but too much stress pushesthem over their limits. When you poundyour feet on hard surfaces playing sportsor wear shoes that irritate sensitivetissues, you may develop heel pain, themost common problem affecting the footand ankle. A sore heel will usually getbetter on its own without surgery if yougive it enough rest. However, manypeople try to ignore the early signs ofheel pain and keep on doing the activitiesthat caused it. When you continue to usea sore heel, it will only get worse andcould become a chronic condition leadingto more problems.

Proper footwear such as an extra depththerapeutic shoe and custom moldedaccommodative inserts will assist in therelief of heel pain.

Valgus

Valgus is characterized by an abnormaloutward turning of a bone, especially ofthe hip, knee, or foot.

Varus

Varus is an abnormal position of a boneof the leg or foot. A varus foot or leg isturned inward, twisted toward the centerof the body.

Pes Planus

Also known as flat feet or fallen arches,is the condition in humans in which thearch of the foot collapses, with the entiresole of the foot coming into complete ornear-complete contact with the ground.In some individuals (an estimated 20-30% of the general population) the archsimply never develops in one foot(unilaterally) or both feet (bilaterally).

Flat feet can develop as an adult ("adultacquired flatfoot") due to injury, illness,unusual or prolonged stress to the foot,faulty biomechanics, or as part of thenormal aging process. Flat feet can alsooccur in pregnant women as a result oftemporary changes, due to increasedelastin (elasticity) during pregnancy.However, if developed by adulthood,flat feet generally remain flatpermanently.

If an adult appears flatfooted whilestanding in a full weight-bearing position,but an arch appears when the persondorsiflexes (stands on tip-toe or pulls thetoes back with the rest of the foot flat onthe floor), this condition is called flexibleflatfoot. Conversely, rigid flatfeet ispresent when the sole of the foot is rigidlyflat even when a person is not standing,

Wide lasted footwear with obliqueforefoot construction and wide shankareas are favorable for accommodatingthis condition.

Pes Cavus

Also known as a high arched foot. Pescavus is a medical term for a cavusdeformity of the foot due to a fixedplantar flexion of the foot.

It is much less common than flat feet andthe cause may be neurological,orthopedic or neuromuscular.

Unlike most cases of flat feet, pes cavuscan be painful because of metatarsalcompression.

People with pes cavus have troublefinding shoes that fit and may requiresupport in their shoes. Long medialcounters provide support and stability.Footwear that has extra depth and agenerous throat enable the ease of entryof a high instep. Blucher laced footwearis often a favorable choice for thisparticular type of foot.

Please retain your packing slip until all fittings are complete. If

you should need to make a return or an exchange, you will need

the packing slip and a return authorization label. If one has not

been included within your shipment, please call:

1.866.936.7463 (SHOE) to obtain one.

Any unused product is returnable/exchangeable within 21 days

from the invoice date without penalty. The product must be

returned in the same condition received, including the original

packing and insoles.

Please avoid the following situations when making a return to

avoid the incurring charges:

• Use the return authorization label on a shipping box as

opposed to placing the label on the shoe box.

• Make sure the products to be returned/exchanged are in

re-sellable condition. This means the shoes have not been

worn, they are not damaged, they contain their original laces

(if applicable) and original insoles. Shoes need to be returned

in their original shoe box with the original packing material.

Tenderfeet Shoes will stand firm incurring charges for

incomplete and/or improper shoe returns.

If the above terms have not been met, Tenderfeet Shoes will

charge the full price for the shoes including shipping and handling.

We will charge a $7.99 restocking fee per pair after 21 days

and before 6 months from invoice date. We will not issue return

authorizations for any product after six months of invoice date.
