Tenby Schools Penang
Dear Parents
This will be our last newsletter of 2016 and it gives us time to reflect and evaluate our achievements and progress. It is also a time to focus on some failures and the leaning that has taken place as a result. The great thing about schools is you can always improve and development and growth never stops. I feel we have made a great leap since September and I am sure 2017 will be another continuation of our journey towards being outstanding. I have been welcomed with open arms from the community and I have enjoyed every minute of my first term at Tenby Schools Penang. The recent Parent Forums have given us more time to listen and change practice, our canteen has seen a sharp uptake of business and the schools once again are celebrating good results, high achievements and fantastic support from students and parents.
We are one community and tonight we all will attend Tenby Schools Penang staff Christmas party, we have 120 staff attending our local Sri Ananda restaurant. We celebrate our achievements as a community and for the first time all staff are invited including teachers, administration, cleaners, guards, gardeners, book shop staff and canteen staff.
If you check our social media pages you will see we are such a busy school and these two weeks alone have seen events ranging from swimming competitions to school plays and performances. My thanks goes out to all those staff and parents that have given that bit extra to provide these opportunities. Please ensure you have a safe and restful break over the December period and Happy Xmas and New Year to those celebrating this festival. I look forward in welcoming our 40 new families when we return in January.
Staff Joining Us!
Ms Grace has been with the school for five and half years and is sadly leaving us for a new position in Human Resources. Ms Grace has supported and cared for our young people with professionalism to ensure are safe and healthy at all times. She is a big character across the school and a big loss. New school nurse Ms Ong Seok Yin will be joining us and has a wealth of experience working in private medical care. Mr Denis is also leaving us to pursue a career in Business Training and will be replaced by Ms Darshini who has been with us for the last 5 weeks. Parent Support
We are currently looking at parents who can support us with links with human resources managers in big corporations so we can promote the Tenby name to new employers. If you have any contact or are interested in the working with the school please contact Miss Stephanie via email on [email protected] Building works
We have a number of improvements occurring over the December break including new sportshall floor, repainting of classrooms and internal walls, railings and outside wall painting, swimming pool improvements, electrical safety improvements, roof works, air conditioning servicing and a number of other projects. Thank you Premises team for all your hard work. Iain Sallis (Campus Principal)

Science Lesson in Action.
An important part of learning science is to know, learn and
apply the Scientific Method. Scientific method is very useful in
solving problems in our life, acquiring new knowledge and
integrating previous knowledge. It consists of steps to
investigate, measure , collect and analyse data so that we
can obtain a fair and correct answer or conclusion. Such
skills are important to have as it will help us to make proper
and good judgement or decisions.
Science lessons in progress - students investigating height of
their classmates, measuring and collecting data and drawing
conclusion as to who is taller and so forth.
Colouring Competition
We encourage our students to take part in competitions organised by
external organisations.
Congratulations to Yashrena Pillai
(First Runner–up) and Harinee Pillai
d/o Thinakaran (Champion) for their
awards in a colouring competition
organised by Merrybrown.

Annual Concert 2016
This year our annual concert was held in Stage 1, PAC Penang. We
played to a full house on that night. The concert was a big success. The
students put up a stellar performance. Every item presented was well
executed and was enjoyed by the audience.
We would like to thank all parents for their continuous support. Kudos
to all the teachers and students for putting the concert together.

Mandarin Day
This was held on 16th November.
A Chinese Calligraphy Competition for Form 1, 2, 3 and 4 created great excitement as students are aware
that Chinese calligraphy is an art that requires skill and tremendous concentration. They were keen to
show case their skills and put into practice what was learnt in Mandarin class.
There were two categories for lower secondary and upper secondary classes.
Category:
A – Beginners. Competitors write a passage in blue or black ink.
B – Intermediate. Competitors must copy a passage, using a calligraphy brush.
The winners for all the categories were awarded certificates.
The students enjoyed the competition and realised that Chinese calligraphy is an art that requires not only
skills, but also concentration and patience.
I must try
my best !!

POST PT3 PROGRAMME
VISIT TO THE FISHERIES RESEARCH INSTITUTE (FRI), BATU MAUNG,
The Form 3 students went on a trip to the Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) in Batu Maung, last week.
The educational trip gave the students the opportunity to learn about the on-going efforts of preserving
and conserving the aquatic life in Penang. They were amazed by the wide diversity of marine life like sea
turtles, moray eels and coral reef fishes. There was the Bryde’s whale skeleton on display.
Thanks to the staff at the Fisheries Research Centre, the students were given a very informative
educational tour with commentaries on the marine life and how to protect our ocean ecosystems.
The trip also gave the students an opportunity to reflect and link theory learnt in geography class to the
real world of marine life. Hopefully what they have seen on the trip will inspire them to help in conserving
marine life.

Friendly Match
A friendly football match was held between
The Tenby Schools Futsal Team and The
Special Education Secondary School on 25th
November at 3.30 p.m.
The students from both schools had a great
time playing a fast and exciting game.
Students from the Special Education School
showed off their prowess and everyone
present was really impressed. The students
proved that being hearing- impaired was no
barrier to playing football well. They inspired
our students to play with gusto. STSS
players realised that they were playing
against some of the most formidable school
state players!
Supporters from both schools enjoyed rooting for their team. There was good sportsmanship. It was so
heartening to see our students cheering for the Special Education students!
Finally the game ended in a draw. No goals were scored by either team, but the sportsmanship,
camaraderie shown by the players were the biggest winners!
We look forward to more matches with SM Pendidikan khas

STSS FIELD TRIP TO SPRITZER ECOPARK AND TAIPING ZOO
It was an exciting and fun-filled day for the STSS students as they went on an educational tour to Spritzer Ecopark and Zoo Taiping. It was a day where students get to explore and experience nature.
At Spritzer Ecopark, students were briefed on the process of making mineral water bottles which includes Water Treatment, Bottling and Packaging. Students were also thrilled to see gigantic machines used in the process. They also learnt that mineral water is extracted 420ft underground from pure and clean natural water sources.
Next, it was the Taiping Zoo that made our students ecstatic as they got to see wild animals such as giraffes, lions, Malayan elephants, Tapir and Orang Utan. Students also got the opportunity to acquire knowledge about the importance of conservation and animal care.

STSS Transition Day
Transition day for the 2017 Form 1
students was run on 18th November.
The programme was to support
student transition from the primary to
the secondary school. We wanted the
students to have positive transition
experiences - interaction with students
and teachers, continuity in change and
also a sense of belonging in a new
school environment.
STPS Standard 6 students and those
from other national schools got to
experience a day in the secondary
school. They were all very excited joining in the lessons and co-curricular activities. The present Form 1
students participated in the activities and played a major role in helping the new students to feel
comfortable in the new secondary school environment
The transition day was a success, as the students were really immersed in interactive lessons and fun
activities.

Tenby International Primary School (TIPS)
Dear Parents,
As we approach the last week of our successful and busy term 1, we are so proud of the many
achievements of all the children across the whole school from Nursery to Year 6. This week was filled with
exciting educational visits as exit points for IPC units in Year 3 and Year 6, Year 4 played host to a school
that wanted to meet new children and engage in an exchange of English conversation. Then today we
were truly impressed by the many talents of our youngest children from Nursery to Year 2 in their end of
term production of Fantastic Fairy Tales.
We also hosted a brilliant Key Stage 1 swimming gala on Wednesday. Our football teams will have on
final tournament on Monday against Dalat, they have had huge success over the term and we hope that
Monday will bring the same.
As a way to celebrate the great things achieved over the past 3 months we are holding our end of Term
Disco on Monday from 5.30-7.00pm. This is a fun event for TIPS children to come together, dance, sing
and enjoy each other’s company surrounded by fun activities and Music. None of these events nor the
great learning experiences given to your children, could be achieved without the fantastic efforts and
commitment of all the whole TIPS staff team. I hope you will join me in thanking them for their hard work
and wishing them a happy holiday and we look forward to the wonderful opportunities in store for the rest
of the year.
I hope that all families have an enjoyable break and for those that celebrate it, Merry Christmas and a
Happy New Year.
Regards
Ms Marian (Head of TIPS)

They will now be continuing their fantastic effort and will be aiming for Silver.
Well done!
On 22nd November Year 4 were hosts to 35 children from Hi-Tec
Kulim. The children discussed similarities and differences
between our 2 schools. We sang songs together and we now
want to continue the link via ongoing written communication.
The children were kind enough to bring gifts to share with the
children before they made their journey home.

Football stars
Following our recent football matches against Dalat, all the teams played well and were a credit to their teams and the

Fantastic Fairy Tales
The children from Nursey, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 shared their Fantastic FairyTales performance today
to a packed audience of very proud parents. The Early Years children gave us a rendition of the 3 little pigs
using Talk for Writing. They were so confident and clear– amazing for children of 3 & 4 years old.

Year 1 & 2 put on a brilliant original version of Little Red
Riding Hood. The costumes, singing and overall
performances were excellent. I would like to thank all the
staff for their hard work in making this event such a

The weeks at Tenby fly by! When I reflect on what has happened in my first term as
Head of TISS it makes me very proud to be part of such a fantastic community. My first
term in a few numbers:
56 days of school; 15 parent meet and greet events, 1 open day; 3 whole school events;
14,000MYR raised; 16 assemblies; 600 sell out crowd for Rock of Ages; 4 public holidays
and a partridge in a pear tree!
Students and their teachers continue to work hard to achieve their best. Our teachers
provide the many exciting learning opportunities, and our students who embrace them.
That is why we are teachers!
On behalf of all our teachers, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued
support this term. Wishing you a wonderful break and a prosperous 2017.
Miss Liz
It has been a busy time with our Year 12’s and
13’s organising a fact-finding forum on A Level
subjects for the Year 11’s. In addition our
expert team were able to offer advice and
answer questions about life in Tenby Sixth Form
and the careers guidance that we provide for
our students about university or their next step
beyond Tenby. A fantastic and well-organized
event that our year 11’s found very useful.
Thank you to you all!
Miss Paula
Tip Of The Week
‘Procrastination: avoiding difficult tasks
and deliberately look for distractions . ‘
1. Address any fears of success/failure
2. Tell yourself out loud that you can
and will do the task now.
3. Link task to your goals—e.g. I’m
doing this to get into University or to
get a great job.

MISS CAROLYN
It has been a time of witnessing the transformation of both students and classrooms. It started with Halloween where the students transformed into all creatures fantastical. It was also great to see some of the Key Stage 3 dancers demonstrating their K-Pop style, particularly impressive was Jaycee Tan from 7S.
Sporting events have highlighted that excellence starts early with involvement and dedication. Well done those students who rose to the challenge of playing netball and basketball with our visiting teams. Year 9 students have organized a competition to transform their classrooms for Christmas. Currently 6:00pm students can be seen demonstrating their work ethic and desire to win. Photographs will be in the next newsletter.
Finally students’ transformational smiles have been seen everywhere, a great term.

It has been a very busy first term at Tenby, but
Year 10 and 11 have very nearly made it to the
end! While Year 10’s have gradually adjusted to
the slightly more stressful life of IGCSE’s, Year
11’s have started to think more about their future
studies and preparing for their all important mock
exams. Keep working and studying hard KS4, but
don’t forget to take some time to sit back and relax
over the holiday period, you deserve it!
