Friday 21 August 2020

Thankfully we will still be able to have our annual Artz Festival in the last week of this term. Our community sharing and celebration of this learning will be held later in Term 4.

Thanks also for your support in practising social distancing outside the school. Many parents have arranged to meet their children at significant landmarks away from our school gates. This has enabled our 810 children to exit at the end of each day safely.

Kia pai to mutunga wiki (Have a good weekend)  Naku noa  Malcolm Milner  Principal (Te Tumuaki)

COVID

Sickness

If your child is sick with any of the symptoms of COVID-19 (see below), please keep them at home, call your doctor or Healthline (0800 358 5453) for advice, and arrange for them to get a COVID-19 test as quickly as possible.

If your child is tested for COVID-19 for any reason and they return a positive result (i.e. they have the virus):

1. Auckland Regional Public Health Service will be in direct contact with you.

2. Please keep your child home from school and carefully follow the instructions and advice given to you by the public health service.

3. The Public Health Service will also contact anyone else from the school, students and staff, who are close contacts of your child (as well as any close contacts from outside of school).

COVID Health General Information Protecting Your Whānau

We are living in a world of information and some of the difficulties of navigating this

information world is the sea of misinformation.

Page 3: Tena koutou, Malo e lelei, Kia Orana, Fakalofa lahi atu ... · Al Salaam a’alaykum, Ni hao, Merhaba, Konnichiwa, Hola, Annyong hasayo, Greetings Balmoral School Newsletter Te Kura

Reliable sources show that COVID-19 and its impacts are real.

• We need to wear masks.

• We need to physically distance,

• We need to get tested if we are unwell,

• We need to stay home if we can, and we need to do this together.

For ourselves, for our families and for our communities.

Sick children must stay at home.

Parents should seek medical advice if their child has COVID-like symptoms and get tested if advised to do so.

If a child displays any symptoms of COVID-19, tests positive for COVID-19, or has been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19, they must self-isolate.

I would encourage you to keep your child at home with you if anyone in your household displays COVID like symptoms and someone is waiting for a test result to come back.

School Closed and Teacher Only Day The school will be closed on Friday 20 November for a Teacher Only Day.

Unfortunately there is some misinformation in the community about Teacher Only Days and people saying that staff are getting an extra holiday. This is not true.

Schools have to be open for instruction a regulated number of days in a year. The Board then allocates the days we will be

open for instruction to meet this requirement. Sometimes they add in additional Teacher Only Days so that we can finish the year on a particular day. They also can add in up to ten days per year (outside the mandated instruction days) where we can call staff back to school to attend a seminar. We call these days Teacher Only Days.

Safety at the Gate Many thanks to the members of our community who are respecting the safety of the children at our school.

You have enabled these children to get home safely by parking in designated spots, not completing u-turns in the middle of a busy road and encouraging children to walk, ride or use their scooter to get to school.

The number of bikes and scooters has increased dramatically at school and has had the added benefit of helping our students become healthier.

No doubt you will see more of these out on the roads around our suburb so please

continue to drive safely and slowly in and around our neighbourhood.

Every whānau wants their child to get home safely.

Enrolments for our Primary School 2021

A small number of Out of Zone Year 2 available We close for these Out of Zone places on Wednesday 14 October.

Parents can submit their child’s out of zone enrolment application for Year 2 online here.

The BuildOver the last few weeks, the builders have been busy. This week they will be digging a 4m deep trench from our northern boundary on the eastern side of Room 29 and 30 to connect the redirected stormwater. We expect this to be completed by the end of the school holidays. All the piles for the primary school have been installed. Over the coming weeks, the soil from this site will be roved and prepared for the foundations.

The concrete remediation works in the pool has begun, and the contractors are making good progress. There is still much

work needed to restore the pool to full functionality after 18 months sitting idle.

The landscaping works outside the intermediate block continues as does the defects repair.

Artz Festival

Next week we have our fabulous annual Artz Festival where every pupil creates a piece of art. These pieces of creativity will be on display at our Artz Exhibition on Tuesday 20 October from 5-7pm.

Next week we will be having some themed days so please help your children express some individual creativity daily.

News from the LibraryNews from the Library: Scholastic Book Week is coming up in Week 2 of next term. Save your pennies to spend on the latest titles, all of which will be on display in the Quiet Reading Lounge in the Library. Scholastic go on to support the Library based on the dollar value of all the books sold to our community, so it's a win-win - new books for home or gifts, while directly supporting the school.

We've been building up our collection of dyslexia-friendly novels. Rather than shelving them in a separate section of the Library, teachers and parents can ask us anytime for a list of them, and we'll point you in the right direction. These books have approved typefaces, paper colour

and high-interest topics, which can help assist children who are building up their reading confidence

News from our Primary Whānau News from Whānau Hiringa The classes in Hiringa all started their class inquiries by asking the question Whose home is this? Have a look at where the students' ideas and questions have taken us. Hiringa students have also been busy writing speeches this term. The topic they were given was WISDOM and we had some great interpretations of it including … why animals are wiser than humans, wise ways to travel and wise plays in sports. Well done to all our students and special congratulations to our finalists Brooke Wilson, Thomas Hatwell, Patrick Garbett, Emily Rope, Tommo Cope, Ava McLaney, Evie Noble, Maddi Wright, Samantha Mutu-Grigg, Ruby O’Hara, Lily Skinner and Lily Quayle. We have a proposed date for the Eden-Albert Cultural festival which will go ahead if Covid-19 restrictions allow. The festival will be on Saturday 28th November The Balmoral Cultural group and Kapa Haka groups have been entered. We will send more information home with students in the coming weeks. Shire 10 has been exploring the world of honey bees. We are interested not only in how they make their homes but also in how their colonies are structured so that every bee has an important role to play.

Room 28 read about different types of houses and looked at how houses around the world are constructed. They then planned and constructed their own houses out of cardboard. ‘Grand Designs’ has got nothing on what’s been going on in Room 28!

Room 29 were curious about animals and all about their homes. We were interested in seeing how different animals lived, how they interact with their environment and why they even build structures at all. We had a go at creating our own animal habitats and found it’s not as easy as animals make it look! Check out Jacob’s Meadowlark nest and Frankie’s Red Panda den!

In Room 30, we are creating the Village of 30 - this represents the sharing nature of a village, and how we are Room 30 with 30 students. Currently, we are discussing how our village will function. We are developing laws, leadership positions, employment and a

financial system. In PE we set up different ‘lands’ made from different types of equipment. We have been discussing how to fairly include people within our lands, deal problems and

disputes and how to fairly share resources.

Shire 9 has been very busy reading and discussing homes from around the world, drawing homes, creating 3D versions of their dream home, designing, building and painting their mini homes, before presenting.

News from our Intermediate WhānauWe were really excited with the news that Jesse and Summer’s baby girl arrived last week. The children in Jesse, Rosie and Steve’s space have been writing letters of congratulations for them. Here’s Ali’s very wise words of advice:

Dear Jesse, Congratulations! Great news about your baby girl. Here's some advice based on what I have learned from my baby brother, Fin: Feed them regularly, there's nothing worse than a hangry baby. You have to be silent while they are sleeping (sleeping babies are the best babies). Carry them on your shoulders, they like that (but maybe not yet). DO NOT DROP! Try and introduce them to lots of people so they don't become clingy (but don't crowd her). Don't give her too much sugar (especially coke). Avoid spoiling her because otherwise, she will expect things. Don't worry about what her first word is (even if it is “Mum”). Duplo is better than lego for young kids. Don't buy her expensive clothes, she'll just grow out of them. Raise her to be a 'Te Wai' baby. And finally... Give her lots of care and love, that’s the most important thing. From Ali
