What busy months we’ve had here in Kelston, The Community Planning day was a
great success and we collected so many fantastic ideas. It was great to see many
local residents came and enjoyed the day.
Our second PTBK Award was a memorable evening with a singing performance and
a special visit from Carmel Sepuloni who came and supported the event.
There are more exciting things coming up so sit back, relax and find out what’s hap-
pening here in Kelston.
The Kelston Community Trust (KCT) was established in 2000. It was
an initiative of local community members, council members and school
principals. Each month a meeting is held and everyone is welcome to

Dear Kelston Neighbours,
Kelston Deaf Education Centre is now operating fully from its new buildings on Archibald Road. Throughout the long
building period, our West Auckland students continued to attend their classes in our excellent Kelston Schools: Kelston
Primary School, Kelston Intermediate School, Kelston Boys High School and Kelston Girls’ College where we ran the
KDEC School Provisions.
The demolition of old buildings and rebuild of new was a long and complex process. The project was led by the Ministry
of Education - New Schools Team who engaged MPM Projects Ltd. and Hawkins Construction to rebuild an operation
centre for Deaf Education service delivery for the North Island. KDEC can not thank this team enough for their work,
which provides us with a modern environment for the 23 residential students (who attend the Kelston Schools), our fan-
tastic new Preschool and our purpose built Operations Centre.
One of the most exciting opportunities the rebuild has presented for the Deaf Community as well as for our local Kelston
community, was that our Board has been able to fund the rebuild of Ruaumoko; KDEC’s Marae. Ruaumoko is unique in
New Zealand and the world as it is the
only Marae for Deaf students and their
whanau, the staff that work with these
young people and the Deaf community.
We are very proud of this new building.
It is still in very early stages, but as we
work towards completing the service for
this we look towards an official opening
in the near future.
We hope that you will agree with us that
it was worth it! We have a new purpose
built facility that allows us to continue
our work as a world leading Deaf Edu-
cation Centre, and for Kelston commu-
nity to have an improved amenity that
enhances the local area.
To our immediate neighbours we would
like to once again express our gratitude
for being tolerant. We appreciate what
you have had to contend with construc-
tion disturbance for the past 18 months.
These sketches will give you an idea of
the site and the buildings.
Warmest regards,
Tom Purvis

Ramadhan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. This
year it falls during the month of June. It is the month during which Muslims ob-serve fasting from morning twilight (Fajr Prayer) to the evening twilight (Maghreb Prayer). Ramadhan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. Fasting is prescribed in this month. It is a month in which the holy Qur’an was revealed.*
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims throughout the world observe a joyous three-day celebration called Eid al-Fitr (the Festival of Fast-Breaking). Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of Shawwal, the month which follows Ramadan in the Islamic calen-dar. It is a time to give in charity to those in need, and celebrate with family and friends the completion of a month of blessings and joy. **

“Ramadhan is a time for generousity and giving. It is a time when we think
about those who have less than us as well as thank Allah for everything He has
