Hamiota’s Filipino Basketball Tournament, in June

this year, was highlighted in the September/October, 2013 issue

of the Manitoba Filipino Journal (the Pulse of the Filipino

Community since 1987).

“Bookmark Hamiota on Google Maps as the next hotbed of

Filipino basketball talent” (excerpt), said the Journal.

Hamiota is proud to have such dedicated individuals such as

Ed Taborlupa and George Sale who organized the tournament in

June. It takes a lot of work!!............Thanks Mga Kaibigan !!!

NB: ‘Pinoy’ to Filipinos is like ‘Brits’ is to the British, and

‘ Mga Kaibigan’ means Friends.

Happy Holidays from the Mid-West Arts Council

This year has flown by with so many interesting events and exhibitions, and it is important to the

Mid-West Arts Council to say “Thank You” to everyone who has supported us this past year.

To all the groups we work with or who regularly use the Heritage Arts Centre – square dancers,

archivists, artists, dance club, drama club, Kids’ Club, gift shop artisans, highschool and elementary students in

Hamiota, Oak River and Miniota, and afterschool art students in both Hamiota and Miniota – it’s just been such a

pleasure working with you all!

To all our hard-working volunteers who have worked, performed and busked, donated food, and organized teas,

concerts, car shows and ceilidhs – thank you for your enthusiasm, energy, and the great laughs we’ve had along the

way! All the events and activities couldn’t have happened without your spirit of generosity.

And finally, to all those who have rented the Heritage Arts facility for birthday parties, showers, luncheons, business

meetings, anniversaries and family gatherings, or donated funds both privately or from other hard-working commu-

nity groups – your financial support has given us the ability to make much-needed building repairs, and to encour-

age and support the amazing musical and artistic talent in the area, as well as provide more youth and family-

oriented activities which we hope all adds to the vibrancy of the whole community.

We hope to see you all again in the New Year!

Currently, the “Quilt’ Til You Wilt” group has a collection of beautiful quilts on display at the Arts Centre and the

Gallery Gift shop has a fresh selection of unique handmade gift items available for sale. We will be having a

mini-exhibition of the “Dare to Dream” afterschool art group and short program by the “Dare to Dream” jazz/vocal

ensemble on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. The Arts West Travelling Gallery, with paintings by some of Westman’s interesting

artists will be on display from Jan. 20 – Feb. 4. The Afterschool Arts visual art classes will resume January 31, with

Elaine Rawlings teaching four weeks of Watercolour basics. Also coming up, George Rogers has lined up an

entertaining program for the Scottish Ceilidh on Feb. 7, and we’ll be having a Valentine’s Day Tea on Feb. 14th.

If parents of any of our young pirates would like to stop by - the free photographs taken at the “Pirate’s Party” are

available at the office.

This is how we know we are one with him, just as he is one with us. “ (1 John 4:13). When we

have received God’s Gift of salvation we have his Spirit inside us. We have a direct line to him

when we need to talk. If we think it he hears it, when we ask questions he answers us. The gift of salvation is only opened by

receiving Jesus Christ as your Savior through faith. This Christmas you can experience the gift of His Presence by opening

Accessibility/Information

Corner and

Library Projects

These community based projects were funded by a New Horizons for Seniors

grant applied for by the Age Friendly Hamiota Committee.

The work on the Accessibility/Information Corner was completed by Plantland

Nursery from Shoal Lake with input on the project given by Hamiota Community

members and organizations. The work was overseen by Dana Routledge and Tim Weber.

The goal for this corner was to create an intergenerational project connecting seniors and youth in maintaining an outdoor

beautification project to promote volunteerism, engage seniors in mentorship and support social participation and inclusion of

seniors. The seating will provide & encourage conversation and a rest stop for those engaging in ParticipACTION. Seniors and

youth will help to maintain the corner plantings - what a great partnership!

Age Friendly Hamiota was also pleased to provide New Horizon for Seniors funds to install a new automatic door at the

Hamiota Centennial Library. This provides better accessibility for all members of our community to a vital meeting place and

information portal.

The New Horizons for Seniors Program is a federal Grants and Contributions program that supports projects led or inspired by

seniors who make a difference in the lives of others and in their communities.

At the time I am typing this column I am preparing for the MWSA Fall Seminar to be held in Winnipeg on

Dec. 4th-6th. Looks as though the agenda is centered around the new permit forms we will have to fill out in

2014 because of the Cosmetic Spray Ban. We are told in big letters that we are not going to be happy with the

new demands in the permits. When we were told it wasn’t going to be pretty I envisioned a picture of one of my

antagonists on the front page. As far as not being able to use existing products for weed control in Towns within

the District I am working on alternative methods to try in 2014.

I was one of 3 Weed Sups. who manned our MWSA booth at the A.M.M. Conference in Brandon the last week of November.

We find this as a very important method of promoting our Weed Control Districts to Municipalities who are not members of

any District. ALWAYS lots of questions come from the booth visitors. Of course with the impending forced amalgamation

coming in the near future we were asked how it was going to affect the Districts. Certainly something the provincial

government has not addressed yet and any thoughts are speculative at this point. It appears to me in this corner of the province

there will be a number of municipalities that will partner with others outside existing Districts. As most readers will have read,

Woodworth will be partnering with Wallace etc., and Blanshard is partnering with Saskatchewan R.M. and the town of Rapid

City. So, in the Midwest Weed District, and this is basically MY thoughts for the time being, we will lose Woodworth because

there is a somewhat Weed Control District there now under the direction of Jim Slimmon. The R.M. of Saskatchewan has

expressed interest in the past of joining this District so whether this will be part of the agreement with the 2 municipalities and

Town of Rapid City, who knows????? We will gain the town of Rivers seeing the town is joining with the R.M. of Daly. The

Town and R.M. of Hamiota are joining so, as they are already part of the District, there will be not any difference.

The end of November the weather on Saturday was super so as to hitch up our heavy horse team to a covered in sleigh and go

for a drive. The front has a sliding window so we can instruct the team which way to go etc. With the little stove in the

structure, old Ragweed and his not so blushing bride are very comfortable from the elements such as they are in the winter.

The partial open sliding window has drawbacks though and this was quite evident Saturday. With the extra exertion to pull the

sleigh the gelding let material fly out the back end and some landed on my lap, causing some unprintable words spoken on my

behalf. Those who years ago had the sleigh as one of the main forms of travel, will remember events such as what happened to

Hamiota Collegiate Happenings!!! It is approaching Christmas Break and we are slowing down at Hamiota Collegiate. Last

month, we had our first Fowl Supper at the school and it was a huge success. On November 27th, we had a fundraising barbeque that

raised over $1100 for the Philippines Relief Fund. We would like to thank everyone that donated and participated in the event. Also, at the

end of November, we were lucky enough to host the MHSAA “A” Boys Volleyball Provincials. It was a huge success thanks to all the

volunteers and organizers! We would also like to give big congratulations to the HCI boys’ team for winning gold!!!!

The Annual Christmas Classic Hockey Game will take place in Rivers on Dec. 20th. Go Huskies!

Finally, members of our student council have been doing a project called “Spares with Seniors” every Wednesday during their spare

periods. Students visit and help seniors and so far it has been a great experience!

tea for employees who have reached 10, 15 and 20 years of

service on October 25, 2013.

Hamiota Co-op held its annual staff Christmas party at Mom's Kitchen recently.

Instead of a small gift exchange the staff all agreed to donated $10 each to the Hamiota Christmas Cheer Board. The Hamiota Co-op staff donated $210, and the Hamiota Co-op, with board approval, matched their donation. A Total of $420 was donated to the Hamiota Christmas Cheer group!
