Ten Things You Should Know About LinkedIn
1. Not just for job hunting. It is a marketing channel. An opportunity for both personal and
business marketing. A powerful tool for managing your contacts, providing you with up to
date information as people change jobs, and allowing you to keep in contact with them.
2. What to share? Articles you find that are easily digestible, relevant and solve a
problem. Also “like" what others share. This is a professional, social media channel.
Be professional – and social.
3. What to post? Make it easily digestible. Relevant. Solves a problem.
4. Set up a company page. Promote your LinkedIn company page. Add a LinkedIn follow button
on your main web site to direct people to your LinkedIn company page. Introduce your
products and services – by way of an article about the theory or problem, rather than a direct
sales approach. If wanting to do the direct sales approach use LinkedIn paid promotions
which enable you to really drill down into demographic details such as gender, age group and
salary.
5. Host discussion groups for your industry. Check group rules on the top right-hand side before
posting in any community. Most will have some restrictions on sales posts. Groups are for
sharing not sales pitches.
6. Research people and companies to find potential links to new sales prospects.
7. Generate leads. Consider sharing some of your expertise (enough to interest prospects) via
LinkedIn Answers. This Q&A forum provides an opportunity for your staff to increase the
public profile of the organisation by answering questions relating to their area of expertise.
8. Coordinate your organisation’s LinkedIn activities. One person and a deputy should do that.
9. Recommend others and ask for recommendations. LinkedIn has a culture of quid pro quo.
Win friends (and remind people you exist) by returning the favour with endorsements as well.
10. Publish “Thought Leadership” papers utilising their “publish a post” function. Not long. 750
words are adequate plus article specific bio. Create a catchy headline to attract attention. .
