BVL update

APPLAUSE !!!!

See picture - in 2013 -2014 we raised $33,719.60

This year, The bowlers of Michigan raised $56,484.53 in support of the BVL,which will be used for Michigan veterans' recreation therapy programs to helpboost spirits and improve morale by providing outlets for an active and engagedlifestyle.

"BVL dollars pick up where government funding leaves off," explains BVLChairman John LaSpina. "These programs are a vital link in the recuperationprocess. Time and time again, studies show that programs like the ones BVLprovides are the key in speeding recuperation and reducing stressors like isolationand loneliness. We thank our friends in Michigan for helping us in our mission tomake a positive difference in the lives of our veterans and active duty military."

Meet your MWBA Board members

Martha Boron - Director # 8 - Canton

I started bowling back in the dark ages - with duckpins! There were no youth programsback then but there was an intramural club at high school. I didn't bowl for a couple ofyears while in college (Univ. of Maryland) but then joined a mixed league in College Park,

Md. with my soon-to-be husband. After we were married, we came up here to live as hewas from the Detroit area. We joined a mixed league with a group of neighbors and afriend talked me into going to the local association annual meeting and the rest is historyas I became involved in the Tri-City WBA about 42 years ago!

I served on the Tri-City Board for many years in many capacities, including President. Iwas elected to the Hall of Fame in 2002 and elected a Life Member in 2003. Elected tothe State Board in 1996, I have served as a director since that time. I've bowled in 33National Tournaments and 45 State Tournaments (heading for 50 if my joints hold out!), twice in the Mid-West and MANYlocal tournaments. Blessed with a strong team around me, we were local Women's Team Champions in 2009 and againjust this past year - 2015. Highest series is a 641, highest game was a 266 and highest average was a 172. I'm onlybowling in one league these days and carry a 153 average, bowling just once a week (used to be three leagues a week!).Outside of bowling, I line dance taking a couple of classes a week and am active in a country-western dance club thatmeets once a week. I also enjoy cross-stitching and gardening. Now retired, I worked for the University of Michigan in thePhD program at the Business School. I have a daughter who is a history teacher in Dearborn and a son who owns amedical supply business in Ft. Myers, FL.Those National and State tournaments took me all over the country and the state where I've been fortunate to meet a greatmany wonderful ladies, especially in Michigan! And now a shameless plug for the Michigan Women's USBC WBA - this is agreat group of women to work with! First and foremost on everyone's mind is how to make the league and tournamentexperience better for our bowlers. Kudos to all the volunteers around the state that work for bowling.

2016 Tournament honoree

Our 2016 Tournament is dedicated to Kim Kopf

Kim was born in Pontiac, where bowling has always been a part of her life. HerMother Norma, worked at Hartford lanes, where Kim started bowling (at age 5) andher Dad, Robert would take her to his league. Her older brother Randy, who shepracticed with, also drilled all her bowling balls at the beginning and continued tocoach her and go to all her tournaments.

Kim has five Queens Titles to be proud of. In 1985 she won the Michigan QueensTournament by maintaining a 225 average. Also that same year she won theKalamazoo Queens. Then in 1992 and 1995 she won the Battle Creek Queens, and in 2011, she won the State Senior Queens tournament. She has also been on the LPBT Women's Professional Tour (in 1986) for 6tournaments.

Kim claims 6- 300 games and her high series was a 794.

Kim was the first lady in Battle Creek to roll a 300 game and 4 -700 series in aseason 748, 738, 712 and 703. She was a member of the first women's team tobreak the 3,000 mark with a 3130 that was 8th in the Nation; Kim had 279 - 695. In the Battle Creek City Tournament shewas All-Events winner in 1984, 1989, 1990 and 2002, Singles 1997, Team 1984,1987,1990,1996 and 2002, Doubles 1994and 1997 in Lansing. She was bowler of the year 1989-91, member of the All Star Team 1990-1996 and 2000-2002.Kim was inducted into the Battle Creek WBA Hall of Fame for Superior Performance in 2000.

Kim and her teammate, Lindy Burton also traveled to Lansing to bowl in a women's scratch league and participated inmany tournaments. She won several titles in Lansing, including three actual doubles titles, two times Kings and Queens'schampion, and the Lansing Area 600 tournament division A doubles actual title. Kim was inducted into the Lansing Hall ofFame in 2014.

Lowlights: when her brother Randy and good friend Lindy Burton retired from bowling. The "good Ole days" when we hadto turn away bowlers for the Queens tournament because it was full!

Page 7: TEN PIN TOPICS - Michigan State USBC...And now a shameless plug for the Michigan Women's USBC WBA - this is a great group of women to work with! First and foremost on everyone's mind

Highlights: bowling with her parents, her brother, being coached by Buzz Fazio. Being indicted into the Michigan Hall ofFame, and having family and friends there to share in the moment. Her sister Patti and nephew Luke were on hand whenshe won the senior queens, and of course all the people she has met and bowled with that she now considers friends.

This tournament dedication is just one more way to honor Kim for her many accomplishments.

Association News

Southwestern Michigan reports:

Karyn Fricke chased that elusive 300 game for many years, with a 299 in 2005, 298 in2006, and an "11-in a row" game of 290 in 2012. But on October 11, 2015 at theMichigan State 600 Club Tournament in Owosso that all changed. Karyn finally rolledher first 300 game in the last game of the Singles event on Sunday. Then, she rolledher 2nd 300 a couple of weeks later in the Monday night Lakeshore Lassies league atKelley's Bowl in St. Joseph. Karyn said she wasn't nervous when she rolled her first300. "I didn't worry about it because I figured 1 pin would keep standing and it wouldbe another 298 or 299." Karyn also placed 4th in Singles (986) and 6th in All-Events(1900), as well as having the high game of the tournament. She was inducted in theSouthwestern Michigan USBC WBA Hall of Fame for Superior Performance. Nowthat she has a couple of 300 games on her record there's no telling what will be next for Karyn!

Also doing well in Owosso this year are Jill Wilkens and Patty Howell who placed 7th in Doubles with a score of 1882.

In other news from Southwestern Michigan WBA, a couple of our ladies placed in the top 10 in the recent Les Dames de 700 NationalMail-O-Graphic Tournament. Debbie Price placed 6th in Division B with a 756 series, and Jill Wilkens placed 10th with a 741 series.

Lapeer reports:

Debbie Bennett rolled her first 300 games on 1/22/16 at Gerlach's Bowling Center.Friday Night Prime Time league.Series of 679 games of 186, 193 & 300Her average is 190She is the third woman bowler to roll a 300 games at Gerlachs.

teacher/coach and we bowled in the basement of an IGA store which had 8 lanes. Ididn't join a league until I was out of high school and turned 18. My Mom neededsomeone to fill out her team and I have been bowling since (about 50 years). Myhighest series is 676 and my high game is 274. The highest average I have finisheda season with is 174. This year I am only bowling 2 leagues a week and hope tocontinue to bowl for many years if my knees hold out!I am currently the President of the Southwestern Michigan USBC WBA, and havebeen since 2008. Prior to that I served as association secretary for 2 years and as adirector for 3 years. I have bowled in the national tournament since 2000 withoutmissing a year. I have bowled in all Midwest tournaments so far and plan to go toIowa this year. I will continue bowling in nationals as long as I am physically able. This is the one time during the year I get to visit with a couple of old friends who havemoved to other states. We still bowl together on my national team and hope to do sofor many years. We love traveling to different cities to get together and participate insomething we all love!I retired from Whirlpool Corporation in 2008 and continue to work part-time at aresidential facility for parolees doing data entry. My husband and I have beenmarried since July 1972. We do not have any children, with the exception of a dog and 2 cats.Beside bowling I love to read, cook, crochet, and do both needlepoint and cross stich. I don't have much time to do theneedle work since I am now "retired". I wonder how I ever had time to work!I love working with the ladies on the Michigan State board, and hope they will want me around for a long time. They are agreat bunch of ladies, and we work hard for our members, but we also have a lot of fun!

Have been bowling in leagues since I was 18 so that means I'vebeen a member of the Lapeer Association for 47 years. My highest average hasbeen a 187, high game of 279, and series of 668. Still hoping some day to have a300 game haven't giving up yet. Someday LOL Have bowled in 39 StateTournaments, and take 8 teams to the Mid-West tournament every year since itstarted.Started out as a director for the Lapeer Association in 1983, was elected secretaryin 1993 and in 1996 became Secretary/Treasurer. In the year 2000 I was awardedthe Secretary of the year by the State of Michigan. And also in the year 2000 wasappointed to the board of directors for Michigan State USBC, which has been ahonor to serve the bowlers in the state of Michigan. I can't begin to say how manypeople I have met and how many miles I have traveled, it has been a pleasure anda whole lot of fun.As far honors I was award Member of the year for the Lapeer USBC WBA in theyear 2013 And was inducted into the Michigan State USBC WBA Hall of Fame forMeritorious Service in 2014. Which is a great honor to be recognized for yourservice. My hobbies include playing golf and pitching horse shoes; I have no golf honors but in horse shoes I can throw a fewringers when needed. I use to race motor cycles in my younger days and even have a trophy to show off. Believe me thosedays have been over for a while. I love to work outside in our yard; we have 23 acres. On one side of the property myhusband built a rock wall and on the other side of the property I built a nature trail so our grandkids would have a place towalk in the woods when they came over.

I love to go to the U.P. fishing for walleyes with my husband and family. We rent a cabin at Twin Cedars resort for a weekand the cabin is right on Frenchman Lake in the little Town of Trout Lake. It's great to take your coffee out on the deck inthe morning and watch the lake wake up and listen to the loons.

Meet your MWBA Board membersHi, I am Director #10 and that means I represent the Metro Detroit USBC on theMichigan State USBC Women's Bowling Association. It is great being a Detroitbowler. We have great centers, great opportunities, and great events because weare the "Bowling Capital of the World". I have bowling friends that have moved todifferent parts of the country and they find out fast our sport is treated differentlyelsewhere.I came to bowling through my parents and Girl Scouts. My mom was our Brownieleader and being a little craft challenged she concentrated on outings. Mom had juststarted bowling in a morning league after taking some lessons at Skore Lanes inTaylor. She thought it would be a good idea to take thirty little girls bowling. Whatwas she thinking? I liked it and a friend of mine decided she did too. She joined oneof the youth leagues at Skore. This friend begged me to join so I signed up and Iwas put on the wait list. In November we got the call and I went bowling thatafternoon with my dad. I threw a lot of gutter balls during that first series of 146. Iwould go up to bowl then go back and sit on my dad's knee. He would later recallthis first afternoon as long and he thought I would start to cry because I was doingso badly. I didn't know I was doing badly and there were French fries. The youthdirector Barb McKay offered group lessons to the newbies on Friday afternoon andmy dad signed me up. I guess this lesson was when I fell in love with bowling. Mypassion for youth bowling probably started that day too. The second Saturday Ibowled my first 100 game and I was off to the races.I love, love, love representing Detroit on the state board and I love working with thewomen bowlers in the state and the wonderfully hard working ladies of the stateboard. Ladies, let's go bowling!

National meeting Highlights

What is a national meeting like? It is like a state or local BUT a LOT Bigger ....there were 850 delegatesattending the meeting on Friday.

However, some of the same things are done at yourassociation meetings: elections, voting, rules and awards.Added to this are the seminars that are put on over a twoday period. Some of them were:The Future of Associations, State Association/Association Manager/ President and VP Networking ,USBC Recruitment, USBC Retention, informationtechnology, Youth membership services.

The delegates passed the forced merger for all states andlocals effective August 1st 2018. Michigan has already set up a merger committee and we willbe supplying more information to locals as we go forward, to help them in this transition.

Also passed was a dues increase this will not be effective until 20172018 season, when it will increase to$13.00. Then no further increase until the 20222023 season.

Greetings!

This month's news letter has entry blanks for you, we hopeyou use them and look forward to seeing you at thesetournaments.

State office News Welcome to the 2016-17 Bowling Season!Entries for the 2017 State Championship Tournament in BayCity are already posted on our website and in many of theassociations and centers. Team captains of teams thatbowled in the 2016 tournament should be receiving theirs inthe mail sometime next week. Please consider bowling in the 2017 ChampionshipTournament - we will now be using a tournament averagefor those that have bowled a minimum of 18 games in thepast 4 years. NO games have been dropped, so we believeit to be a true representation of tournament competition. We still have both a 4 person and 5 person event for teamcompetition and of course doubles, singles and all events.

competition and of course doubles, singles and all events. And best of all, the price has not gone up! It is still only $80to get into everything. If you would like to make areservation to secure your spot, please phone the office at616/635-2032.And a reminder - while we realize that USBC hasdiscontinued awards, your State Women's Association isstill recognizing those first 600 and 700 series with paidmemberships and for those that roll their first 300 game or800 series - we recognize those accomplishments with asilver necklace/300 lavalier and a silver bracelet with charmfor an 800 series. And we also still recognize the high game and high series ineach association (duplicating any ties). Perhaps, if a shortform was included with the request for final averages askingfor this information as well, you would have this informationand your bowlers could receive their deserved recognition. It is disappointing that many of our associations fail tosubmit these accomplishments and even moredisappointing to your bowlers who should be receivingthem. Please do what you can to make sure yourassociation is submitting this information so that yourmembers receive the benefits of their membership. And now.....make that call, reserve that spot and we willsee you in Bay City in 2017

Clare WorkshopIf your association was not represented at Clare, you missed a lot of information, and a lot ofFUN! There were discussion tables on: the mergers, publicity, tournaments, charities, meetings, andawards. What would bowlers would like to see with the combined boards? What awards we should still keep?, and visions of how our meetings should look in the future.

One of the comments we received :" It was a great way to meet others from differentassociations and for everyone to meet state board members" Special thanks to the MWBA board, to Mark Martin, and Ella Sharp for helping present. Also, thanks to Ben Brose for stopping by and giving us some information from USBC. The skitpresented by the " BOD players" we are sure is up for an Oscar!! State Office News

Welcome to the 2016-17 season! As we start this season, we hope that among your plans is this year's 90TH state tournament! It will be held in Bay City and the centers, hotels/restaurants and local association are ready andwaiting for all of you. And wouldn't it be wonderful if all of our past champions over the years would tryto re-group and join us for this milestone!New this year is the Tournament Average. In an effort to further equalize the competition, wewill begin using a Tournament Average for those of you with 18 or more games bowled over thepast four years (no games dropped). Bowlers without a minimum 18 games will still use theirhighest bowl.com average of 21 or more games. We are still offering the choice of a 5 or 4 person team (and you can bowl both) and of course doubles, singles and all events. When completing the entry form, please do not list ½ pairs of doubles and only list fees forbowlers that are bowling events on that entry - example: if a bowler is bowling team on one entryand doubles/singles on another --- only their team fees should be listed on the team entry andtheir doubles/singles fees should be listed on the other entry. And as always 'remember' - you can make a reservation for a date/time by calling the office - thelonger you wait, choices become more limited.Congratulations also to the Metro Detroit USBC who will be hosting our 2018 Tournament.Delegate forms for the 2017 Annual Meeting in Sterling Heights will be mailed and emailed in the nearfuture along with hotel information for the Wyndham Garden, Sterling Heights. So if you have notupdated your contact information with us, please do so as soon as possible. Please visit our website frequently for updated information, accomplishments and forms.

first widely recognized women's association for the sport often-pin bowling. The founding women were aided by male bowlingalley proprietor (Washington Bowling Alleys in St. Louis) DennisJ. Sweeney, who obtained permission from the American BowlingCongress (ABC) in 1907 to hold a national women's tournamenton their lanes, and held one in 1916, providing the inspiration. The first official meeting of the WNBA was held on October26, 1917, in St. Louis. It later became The Women'sInternational Bowling Congress. The purpose of the organizationwas agreed to be: "To provide, adopt and enforce uniform rulesand regulations governing the play of American tenpins; toprovide and enforce uniform qualifications for tournaments andtheir participants; to hold a national tournament, and toencourage good feeling and create interest in the bowling game."The WNBA held its first national tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio,on March 11 - 12, 1918.When it became a part of USBC in 2005, there were over 1.2 million WIBC members playing in 67,000sanctioned leagues in over 2,700 local associations. Local associations exist in every state as well someforeign countries. The national tournament held by the WIBC, now called the USBC Women'sChampionships, is the largest women's sporting event in the world. The 1997 tournament in Reno,Nevada, attracted 14,872 five-woman teams (for a total of 88,279 participants), the largest entry forany team tournament in history and a women's world record."We cannot move forward, if we do not honor the past.Hope you have a wonderful 2016-17 season and looking forward to seeing you on the lanes.

Dear Merry,

Just a reminder: October 15, reserved entries are due for statetournament. A suggestion for November 11, which is Veterans dayHold aBVL (Brightening Veterans Live's) event!

State Mixed Doubles/Team Tournament

The State Mixed tournament is running weekends at the BronsonStrike Zone.

For those of you who havebowled in this tournament, everwonder where all those wonderfulpotatoes that they give away assquad prizes, come from?

It seems that in the early 90's when Frank Peters and his wife Edrieran the mixed doubles, they were looking for donations for thistournament. They approached a friend of theirs, Gary Perkins, who was the Secretary of the Vestaburg/ Edmore Association, andhe suggested potatoes. Since Gary owns a farm, that seemedthe perfect thing he could donate.

So our thanks go out to "Perkins Farm" for their donationsof those ten pound bags of "Prestigious Perkins Potatoes" eachtournament. This has been going on for over 20 years... . That has to be enoughfor every bowler in Michigan to at least have one!

Arlene Staley is 90 years old and was a bowler for many years in the Charlevoix area. She evenattended a few state meetings, remembering the one in Kalamazoo, where she actually met EarlAnthony.Arlene bowled at the lanes in Charlevoix, in one of the firstleagues they had there, early 1960's. She and her husband Kensponsored a team, "Staley's Grocery Store". This was the storethey owned for many years, just a few blocks from LakeMichigan. There were only 8 lanes at their center, and they were always inuse, to the point that if you wanted to open bowl you had towait until after 11:00 pm. to get a lane. She continued to bowluntil the 1990's and still remembers those good times.Arlene continues to stay active, as she loves playing cribbage, gin and any other new game you would like to teach her...weare never too old to learn! Her sisterinlaw Marilyn Hayden, let us know that Arlene did alot for bowling in the Charlevoix area.Arlene is pictured here with a quilt that her daughter made forher from her old bowling shirts, with a few patches placed onfrom: Paul Bunyan Lanes, Thunder Bowl lanes, the NorthernMichigan Tournament and a WIBC patch (1967) for leaguechampions. What a great way to remember special times.

Editors notes

Every season, we try and honor many of our local Hall of Fame inductees

So, what does it mean to be in a Hall of Fame?

It means that someone felt your were deserving enough for them to take the time to submit your name andcredentials. It means that you have contributed much to the sport of bowling, and you are recognized by your associationas worthy of being honored.

It means that you cherished this sport enough to give of yourself for many years, regardless of other events, tasks, and commitments that entered along the way.

It means that your family and friends can see that others recognize the contributions you have made, and thatyour sacrifices were noticed.

Most of all it means that others care and want to honor you.It is a SMALL way that we all can thank those who have given so much to this sport. Is there someone you know that deserved to be recognized? Please consider submitting them. and when you do honor them, please send them to us, so we can acknowledge them as well.

By honoring these bowlers, we also hope that the next generation, will want to emulate those who have gone before, with their own dedication to this wonderful sport!
