TRS retirees are a welcome part of our temporary staff.
However, be aware your TRS retirement income may be affected by becoming a temporary worker.
It is the temporary workers responsibility to contact TRS at www.trs.state.tx.us/ or 1-800-223-8778 to identify any ramifications, such as loss of benefits that may occur due to employment as a temporary worker.
TRS retirees are responsible for paying any pension surcharges triggered by working as a temporary.
This includes surcharges triggered by working in multiple districts.
TRS retirees are not allowed to be a temporary worker and a substitute teacher at the same time.
McKinney ISD provides medical coverage to employees through TRS-ActiveCare. A district temporary worker is eligible to enroll in TRS-ActiveCare if the district reasonably expects the temporary to work at least 10 hours per week.
Although the district reasonably expects temporary workers to work at least 10 hours per week, the district does not guarantee that a temporary worker will receive 10 hours every week.
A temporary worker must enroll in or decline medical coverage within 30 days from date of hire (day after in-house orientation).
TRS Active Care detailed information is available at: https://www.mckinneyisd.net/human-resources/benefits/
If coverage is declined, enrollment cannot be offered again until the next plan year unless the temporary worker experiences a special enrollment event.
If a temporary worker elects to enroll, the temporary worker is responsible for the full premium. The full premium payment must be submitted for one month at the time of enrollment. Premium payments for subsequent months are due by the 15th (or previous business day) of the month prior to the next desired covered month. Late premium payment is considered a voluntary drop resulting in coverage cancellation (effective the end of the last paid month) with no eligibility for COBRA. Loss of TRS Active Care eligibility (working less than 10 or more hours per week, poor performance, misconduct or any other reason for removal from substitute or temporary employee roster) will result in coverage cancellation (effective the end of the last paid month) with notification of potential COBRA eligibility.
Questions regarding medical coverage should be directed to Benefits Manager, Angela Rose at [email protected] or 469-302-4029.
Reactivation
At the end of the school year, all AVID tutors, athletic event only workers, lifeguards and any other designated temporary worker will receive an invitation through their McKinney ISD email account to complete and submit annual paperwork by a designated date.

If the temporary worker completes and submits required annual paperwork and the temporary worker is in good standing with the district, the temporary worker will be renewed for the following school year.
Returning temporary workers must select or decline medical benefits each year. An email will be sent from [email protected] to your McKinney ISD email account. Follow the instructions to either select or decline medical benefits.
A temporary worker that does not complete the required annual paperwork by the designated date will be terminated.
The terminated temporary worker may reapply for future employment, but is not guaranteed future employment.
End of the year terminations
All campus tutors, Special Education temporary workers, and Vento tutors will be terminated effective the last working day in June each year and must reapply for future employment each school year.
Non-contract employees are employed at will and may be dismissed without notice, a description of the reasons for dismissal or a hearing. Temporary employment is at will, temporary and intermittent employment. Non-contractual employees have no property right in their employment and may be dismissed at will at any time for no reason or for any reason not prohibited by law. Non-contractual employees may resign at any time for any reason or no reason. Neither the handbook, nor any communication by any McKinney ISD employee, oral or written, nor any conduct of any kind between temporary employees and McKinney ISD representatives is intended in any way to create an employment contract binding on either McKinney ISD or any temporary employee.
