From the Clergy“Hineni – being present for those in need”

On Rosh Hashanah I spoke about the meaning of the Hebrew word Hineni. While literally it means “I am here” it is not actually a statement of location. It is, rather, a commitment to emotional and spiritual and physical readiness; it is about being prepared to respond to God’s call, to human need and to our own inner voice.

Saying “Hineni” to one another is a goal of our staff and leadership and congregational community. We want to be there for each other at all different times in life. One of the most important ways that we do this is by fi nancially supporting the members of our congregation, and at times non-members, who are in crisis. Over the past two or three years in particular, the Temple has been able to support individuals who have needed help paying mortgages, medical and utility bills and even buying food and gas. In our seemingly fi nancially comfortable community, it is hard to imagine that some of our members are in need of this type of support but they indeed are. Many thousands of dollars have been distributed helping people to stay in their homes, safe and taken care of. These monies come out of two funds. The clergy members’ individual discretionary funds and the Temple’s tzedakah fund. Whereas ten years ago I would have used about half of my discretionary money to support individuals in need, in these past few years I have used almost all of my fund for these purposes.

I am sharing this with you because I suspect that many people are unaware that there is such a signifi cant need for support within our congregation. I feel very badly that I cannot offer more resources to those in need. In a given month, if I am able to pay a mortgage for one family, and a few bills for another, I will have depleted my fund. The clergy share this responsibility among our funds and use the Tzedakah fund too but we realize that the need is usually greater than our resources.

A few of our members who are aware of the gravity of this situation have offered creative and generous solutions. One member donates her monthly social security which she does not need. Another has directed funds for housing support specifi cally. Another buys gift cards from the Giant each time she shops. Most of our donations come from all of you who graciously give in honor of friends, family or life cycle events – thank you for all of those acts of tzedakah.

Sadly, I think that economic challenges will remain with us for quite some time. I would like to invite you to join me in saying a secure Hineni to those who need our help. To be able to answer these individuals acknowledges our awareness that the world doesn’t work in the way it was meant to, and that we are the necessary means for its mending, we are called to its repair. In our role as a sacred community these are our most important statements to one another. To be present when someone calls. To speak and act in sacred response – Hineni. Please consider fi nding a way to help us with this task.

Sincerely,Rabbi Amy Schwartzman

Shirei Shabbat: Music Shabbat Every 2nd FridayBy Cantor Michael Shochet

Are you a lover of the great music traditions of Temple Rodef Shalom? Whether you like the contemporary sounds of our Shabbat Rocks band, or the more classical music of piano or organ, the second Friday night of each month is your opportunity to experience the gamut of our Jewish musical repertoire.

Beginning in October, each 2nd Friday night will be a special musical service called Shirei Shabbat: The Songs of Shabbat. Each month we will feature something different musically. Here’s what you can expect:

October 8: Hear the beautiful sound of cello music added to the accompaniment of our liturgy.

November 12: Our Shabbat Rocks band leads the musical liturgy.

December 10: A guest Klezmer band brings us the music of Shlomo Carlebach and more!

January 14: Experience Shabbat through Dance featuring guests from the Liz Lehrman Dance Studio.

February 11: TBA

March 11: Shabbat Rocks

April 8: Guest Klezmer Band

May 13: Israel music with Koleinu, our Adult Choir

These services are in addition to all the wonderful music that happens throughout each month featuring our choirs, sermons in song and other such special events. Come prepared to sing!

L’shalom,Cantor Michael Shochet

TRS Drama Group Presents Neil Simon’s

"Seven o'clock! Seven o'clock in the village of Kulyenchikov and all's well!"

But is it really? The people of Kulyenchikov live under a terrible cloud - the curse of extreme stupidity. Thousands of teachers - more! Hundreds! - have come in the two hundred year span the curse has been active, hoping to educate the populace and free them from the shackles of idiocy. Neil Simon's play "Fools" follows the story of Leon Steponovich Tolchinsky, a newly minted teacher who sees Kulyenchikov as his own personal challenge. With the combination of his idealism and intelligence, can he break the curse and free the people of this backwards little village, or will he, like them, fall under the curtain of ignorance?

We cordially invite you to join us and fi nd out the answer for yourselves. For one night only, on Saturday, October 16th at 7:30 PM, the mists of Kulyenchikov extend to envelop Temple Rodef Shalom and allow us to share with you the story of "Fools"!

"Fools" is presented by the Temple Rodef Shalom Players, directed by Jen Stein and produced by Doris Parnas. The cast includes Jay Stein as Leon, Barbara Raizen as Snetsky, Rachael Storey as the Magistrate, Sarah John as Slovitch, Carole Heller as Mishkin, Doris Parnas as Yenchna, Aaron Hauptmann as Dr. Zubritsky, Debra Walther as Lenya Zubritsky, Hope Slonim as Sophia Zubritsky, and Jon Ginsberg as Count Yousekevitch.

Connect and Engage!September was remarkable. Thank you to everyone who helped make the High Holy Days and Sukkot so special for the congregation. The liturgy, music, discussions, and the gathering of thousands of people reinforced how important we all are to each other in our community. I hope that all who participated found the experience meaningful and fulfi lling – increasing connections and opening doors for engagement.

As we approached the HHDs, our board made calls to all of our 1500 member households. These calls were a great way of maintaining connections and “checking in” with everyone. We heard good news and sad news. Some calls involved simple greetings and good wishes for the New Year, while others resulted in lively conversations about TRS and current events. In some cases, Board members could not get through and left voicemails. If you did not receive a call, our records may be incomplete, so please call the Temple offi ce.

Our live streaming video of our services – a new “connection” -- was quite well-received. Several hundred viewers from the US and six other countries looked in on the services, with between 30 and 50 viewers watching at any given time during both the early and late services. Congregants and relatives, near and far, who were unable to be at TRS, were able to maintain their connection with our community.

With increased connections, we also seek increased engagement, an important goal. There are so many activities within our vibrant community. Many of you heard me suggest some options, that may have sounded to some as “Eat, Pray, Love.” Maybe everything at TRS does fi t into these three categories: There always seems to be food here. Prayer is high on our list. And everything else we do is all about love – for Judaism, our families and friends, and our community.

So, please look through this Bulletin and our weekly e-letter. Select just one new activity, program, meeting, event, or service that seems interesting to you. Make a call. Ask a friend. Offer a ride. Connect. And be present, ready to engage.

Thank you again to everyone who chooses to make Temple Rodef Shalom such a wonderful community. Peace.

Sisterhood Traditions Helpline

Dear Helpline,Last month you answered a question about “why apples and honey for Rosh Hashanah.” That raised another question in my mind. The apple is the fruit of temptation according to the biblical story of the Garden of Eden, so why does it enjoy such a privileged place in our tradition?

Special TRSPresentation By World Renowned Educator Andrée Aelion BrooksOctober 24 at 7:00 pm

Were some of Shakespeare's major works written by a Jewish woman?

Andree Brooks, journalist, author and lecturer, will present "The Unlikely Tale of Amelia Bassano." A woman of Jewish heritage is now believed to have been a major infl uence behind Shakespeare and his canon. Using update research, we place the life of this woman, Amelia Bassano, as a hidden Jew in London at that time the context of her era. We further explore the multiple achievements of the brilliant and sexy Amelia: favorite of Queen Elizabeth I, Dark Lady of Shakespeare's sonnets and a collaborator on the plays who, in addition, became the fi rst woman to publish a book of poetry in the English language. Was she the only outstanding woman of Jewish heritage of her era? Even that assumption is now under revision. Who were the others? Find out on October 24 at TRS!

Come at 6 pm and enjoy a BUFFET DINNER COURTESY OF TRS! For planning purposes, please register for the dinner at brooksdinner.eventbrite.com no later than Thursday, October 24.

Did Rabbi Schwartzman's Yom Kippur Sermon On Emotional Health Speak To You? Rabbi Schwartzman's Yom Kippur sermon on those suffering with mental health issues, those suffering an

emotional crisis and those who know them and care for them was painfully compelling to so very many of our members. She has received numerous e-mails and phone calls from members in deep emotional pain wanting to share their stories of personal challenge, sadness, loss, the diffi culty in dealing with family members suffering with mental health issues on a day to day basis, and so many more circumstances. Your temple family wants to be here to support and comfort you in any way that we can. To this end, we would like to see if there is interest in beginning monthly support groups for either those who support loved ones with

mental illness or those going through emotional crisis. TRS launches “Hineinu, Standing Together" our internal VOICE program TRS has become a full member of Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement (VOICE), a nonpartisan coalition of more than 40 local congregations dedicated to effecting social change on issues affecting Northern Virginia residents.

We’ve named our congregational effort “Hineinu, Standing Together.” Hineinu continues a year-long campaign of house meetings on congregants' concerns; it will work to strengthen our congregation’s internal connections and enable us to take action together.

Join us Tuesday, October 5, at 7:00 p.m., as we introduce Hineinu. Topics will include raising teens, combatting climate change and supporting aging parents. Congregants will share stories about how these issues affect them and their families. Please plan to join in this important congregational conversation. Sign up at http://hineinu102010.eventbrite.com/.

Then, come experience for yourself what the power of VOICE is doing at the regional level. On Monday, Oct. 18, congregations from across the region will gather to discuss local priorities with the candidates for three NoVA congressional seats. VOICE plans to have at least 900 congregants in attendance; TRS is committed to bringing at least 30 people. Join us Oct. 18 and help TRS make a difference for everyone.

Call Karen Menichelli or Rabbi Saxe for more information.

Best wishes from the TRS Green Team for a healthy, happy, and "green" New Year. The Green Team is looking forward to an active year in which we hope many more of you will be involved. We have some great events planned, and urge you to keep an eye out for future announcements. We would love to know your thoughts and ideas for directions and other activities that the Green Team should be considering in our quest for Tikkun Olam, to repair the earth. Recent events are showing us that we need to be consistently vigilant in our responsibilities as stewards of the land, and to care for creation. Join us.

Social Action Havdalah service, October 9Join the Social Action Committee for a Havdalah service Oct. 9 in Falls Church. Sign up at http://socialactionhavdalah.eventbrite.com/. For more information, e-mail our host, Nikki Koch, at [email protected]. Our Soup Caravans need your helpSometimes, in our busy lives, it's hard to give the gift of time. Each month, on the fi rst Tuesday and fi rst and second Wednesdays, TRS members make soup and/or sandwiches for delivery to local shelters. Our volunteers work together to fulfi ll the mitzvah of charity, feeding the hungry.

We are in dire need of members who can commit to help on a regular basis, and potentially oversee teams of volunteers. Without enough volunteers, we may need to scale back our commitments.

Our fi rst Tuesday caravan, which serves A-SPAN, needs a new leader beginning in October. Caroline Mayer has done an amazing job organizing this group for the past three years. In addition to providing meals to A-SPAN, Caroline arranged for the group to help the Falls Church Winter Shelter provide lunches for clients. Thank you for all that you've done, Caroline! We don't want to stop serving this shelter, but we may need to disband without a lead volunteer. The organizations we serve rely on us; please donate a few hours a month so we may continue this prorgam. Morning and afternoon hours are available. Contact Nikki or Karen for more information. Todah Rabah! Thanks so much to Marc Cohen for spearheading our Yom Kippur food drive for the Share, Inc. food pantry in McLean, which serves low-income residents of McLean, Great Falls, Falls Church, and the Tysons/Pimmit Hills area; more than 1,000 clients were served last year. Thank you to all who came to services and gave generously. Your donations helped many families in need. Thanks also to the dozens of volunteers who helped deliver and sort donations on Yom Kippur afternoon. We couldn't have done it without you!

So what were the comments regarding the fi rst meeting of the "Men of TRS" at Clare and Don's Beach Shack at Falls Church?

I just returned from the Men of TRS (MOTRS) dinner at Clare and Don’s Beach Shack and I want to thank George, Jesse, and the entire MOTRS Executive Team for putting together such a great time! It was good to meet so many fellow MOTRS members. All in all, the cuisine, company, and conversation were most enjoyable!

Our fi rst event this evening was attended by 32 men of TRS. The food was great. The beer was great. The service was great. But the conversation and fellowship were awesome.

I liked the conversation and being able to meet other men of the congregation.

I was pleasantly surprised by the get-together. I've been a member of the Temple since 1971 and have witnessed many attempts to get the men to know each other… I arrived without my car (I had walked from the East Falls Church Metro station) and was overwhelmed by the many offers to drive me home.

I thought our dinner last night was outstanding--mazel tov and toda raba to George, Jesse, and to all who made it happen…Again--one great evening! Let's have many more like it!

I had a great time last night and I'm looking forward to getting together again.

What a great turn out! It was great to meet so many new people.

It was a well-attended, needed event – and fun conversation face-to-face (the old fashioned way!!).

This was a great success and a very auspicious start to the Men of TRS. Let's keep it going!

Really enjoyed the food and conversation.

Good atmosphere, good time together — especially as one of the last to leave.

The opening event was followed by a “Bang-Up Job!” assembling the outdoor Sukkah in September. You still have time to join the Men of TRS for the Sukkah “Tear Down Party” Sunday October 3rd at 3:00 PM with drinks, pizza and more! Please RSVP to Ric Cooper at [email protected] or 703-917-1582. (Do plan to bring work gloves and hammers!).

Then, Wednesday, October 13th, join the Men of TRS for the “Second Night Out” at MAD FOX BREWING COMPANY, 444 West Broad Street in Falls Church. Coordinated by Adam Gruen, the fun starts at 7:00 PM.

Go to the Men of TRS ListServe at [email protected] to get details on signing up for the October 13th “Second Night Out” at MAD FOX BREWING COMPANY and events such as “Dreidles & Drinks” December 9th, a January program on the evolving role of Jewish Men, the February “Men of TRS Shabbat” service, assisting with the Purim Carnival in March, a May “Men of TRS” bus tour to New York City’s Lower East Side led by Rabbi Berkowits, the June “Men of TRS Picnic” and more.

MEN of TRS…join the camaraderie of the Men of TRS! All are welcome!

Traditions Helpline AnswerDear Curious,

In Genesis 2:15-17 the bible talks of not eating of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden. The word fruit (not apple) is not mentioned until Eve is talking to the serpent in 3:2-3. There is a Midrash that talks of an apple. However, in the Talmud (which carries more weight) there is a list of the possible fruits that might have been produced by the Tree of Knowledge and the apple is not on the list. Those mentioned are wheat, fi gs and grapes. The Zohar (the text of Jewish Kabbalah or mysticism) also claims it was a grape.

The poor apple might have been assigned its role due to a misunderstanding, or the perception of the dual meaning in the Latin word malus, which as an adjective means evil, but as a noun means apple.

CE21 UPDATEA Community Engagement Model For Jewish Learning At TRS

CE21 (Congregational Education for the 21st century) is our 5-year initiative to transform Jewish learning for adults and kids at TRS. For the past year and a half, our Task Force has been working to create a new model for congregational engagement and learning. We’ve had meaningful conversations on learning in members’ homes, explored who we are as a learning community, and have researched new models used in other congregations. In the August bulletin (and on our TRS website) I shared our team’s vision for learning.

I’m pleased to report that we are close to laying out our new model for TRS. We will pilot parts of the model this year, and fully implement the program beginning in the fall of 2011.

The core elements of our model have the goal of helping members to:

• Deepen personal engagement in Jewish learning

• Deepen relationships to other learners (building community)

• Engage in Jewish self-discovery• Experience personal relevance and meaning in

learning• Engage where they are at (stage of life and

Jewish knowledge)• Access multiple entry points into learning

(“on-ramp”); create choices among various pathways

• Connect in Jewish time• Learn from trained facilitators

If you’re interested in joining our CE21 team and being a part of this discussion and the project’s implementation, please let me know. I hope that you will discover ways to deepen your own engagement in Jewish learning and living through the many opportunities available at TRS.

It takes a lot of special and dedicated congregants to make these High Holy Day services run so smoothly. A very special Todah Rabah to Marla Schnall and Karen Adelstein for handling the High Holy Day ticketing. Thanks also go to Walter Osteen for help with printing the tickets and preparing the mailing. And a big thank you to the many volunteers who answered our call for help and cheerfully turned out to expertly stuff and prepare ticket envelopes for mailing.

We couldn’t have a successful worship experience without Don Weinberg and Linda Marshall heading up the Usher Corps and the complex High Holy Day logistics. A large thank you goes to our Head Ushers, Dan Blalock, Gail Dezube, Mike Rankin, Jonathan Kosarin, Russ Roseman, Al Schneider, and Don Schiff.

We are fortunate to have the services of our very own EMT during the holidays. Gary Horewitz tirelessly ministered to our members during both holidays along with the Fairfax County Fire Department McLean Station volunteers that were also here for most of our services.

Thank you to Ella Berkowitz Zegler and her family for heading up the Sisterhood Babysitting program for so many years.

And a big thank you to all of the Congregants who make the High Holy Days so successful by volunteering their time and energy to usher for all of our services.

Vestiges: Ink Paintings by Wendy LeitnerOctober 6 – November 9, 2010Meet the Artist: Sunday, October 3110:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Wendy Leitner received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis with a major in painting and minors in writing and English. She works primarily in ink, using a limited palette. She weaves narratives through abstract spaces to re-create the process of memory. By mapping out her own experience and the stories of others, she addresses larger concerns of how we perceive the world around us and are at once trapped and liberated by memory.
