PESACH - THE JOYOUS FESTIVALOF OUR FREEDOM

An ice storm has just blanketed our area for the third time this winterforcing us to suspend many programs but my mind is on the warmth andthe beauty of our spring holiday Pesach, a holiday that all of us lookforward to for the best of reasons. In it the elements of family, peoplehoodand transcendent history coalesce in a manner that touches us on thedeepest level. -

Assembled around the seder table are the people dearest to us. Sharingthis celebration with them is an irreplaceable experience that becomesmore precious with each passing year. If we are fortunate, severalgenerations are present at the table and we feel a bond and form a bridgeacross time. "And you shall tell it to your children," rings truer at theseder than at any other time. And so year after year we link up with thegenerations who came before us, reaching back to Egyptian enslavementand divine redemption.

We come to understand anew the anguish and the pain of oppression andthe delirious joy of liberation, the liberation of our people - the peopleIsrael - and we wish this for others as well. Surely we believe that thefreedom of another people Cannot ever diminish ours, it can only extend it.

To those who are hungry we offer our "poor man's bread," the matzah ofhope, and to those who are oppressed, in fact or in spirit, we offer thelesson we have learned in our struggle for freedom and it is this. Ourforebears on their way to the Promised Land stopped at Mt. Sinai first toreceive the spiritual ideals that would transform them from former slaves tothe People of the Covenant - a covenant of values that raised them andus from the depths of degradation to the heights of human dignity. It is apath we have consciously chosen and above all that choice has made allthe difference.

To one and all a sweet and joyous Pesach.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOLFROM THE EDUCATOR...

The education of children, our children, is alwaysforemost in everyone's mind. I cannot recall evermeeting a parent who didn't want the best, educationally, for their kids.

Education comes in many sizes, shapes and forms- from secular to religious, from formal to informal.Secular education is never questioned. Parents areinvolved, active and show an interest - after all, it'sschool. Kids know it is a must.

Religious education falls into a different category. It's important - but the level of importance variesfrom family to family. On one end of the spectrum,we have parents who are very involved in theirchildren's religious education, forsaking otheractivities. These parents are (usually) the proud"owners" of offspring with positive Jewish identities.Unfortunately, the spectrum has another end: thosewho care, on some level, as long as we here at thetemple do all the work and ask for no help fromhome. This is no judgement - it is merely anobservation.

Then, there is the reality of the situation: religiouseducation is not just book learning, especially not intwo to four hours a week. Religious education isfamily-oriented; it is a way of life and best obtainedthrough role modeling.

The messages parents send, whether overt orsubliminal, have a huge effect on kids and what theythink about being in the temple, being in religiousschool and being Jewish.

In our school, we strive to build a positive Jewishidentity in each of our students. It's not onlyimportant (to all of us) but it's crucial to the survivalof Judaism. The catch is, we cannot do our jobunless your kids are here physically and emotionally.

Think about the message you want to send to yourchildren, especially the next time your kid asks, 'DoI have to go to Hebrew school today?"

THE MYTHS (AND REALITY) OF RELIGIOUS SCHOOL TRAFFIC

MYTHThe traffic line takes forever!

It would be faster to load more cars at a time

Teachers never let the kids out on time.

It doesn't matter if I make a left turn out of the drive. No one will notice.

A U-turn after the right turn is not against the rules.

I know drop-off is through the circular drive - but Ican come through the lower level doors anyway.

REALITYThe dismissal takes approximately nine minuteswhen everyone cooperates. It is safer and quicker to load only three cars at atime.Safer: Cars are following the traffic all the wayaround - not cutting off other cars and pedestriansin the upper tiers of the lot.Quicker: Cars moving to kids are quicker than kidswalking (uphill yet!) to cars.Teachers do let kids out on time. We must allow afew minutes for kids to come out of the building. We all notice! In the time it takes to make that left, traffic backs up all the way to the loading point. Please turn right only!Technically no - but it is DANGEROUS! Pleaseuse your good judgement and find a different turn-around. Remember: we're talking safety!Safety of our students requires that we keep the exitdoors locked. Doors are often propped open byparents and kids, not by staff.

Please be patient and considerate in our parking lot.Safety depends on it!

UNIONG RAM CORNER

Our two main events are approaching rapidly - theUniongram Luncheon on April 13 and Confirmation onMay 15. The list of confirmands will be in nextmonth's bulletin.

The Uniongrarn was "born" in Germany where a youngJewish girls' club used identical blanks for specialmessages which they sent in order to raise funds fortheir charities. The idea was presented in 1913 toRabbi Zepin, then the professional head of the Unionof American Hebrew Congregations. He suggestedthe name "Uniongram" in honor of UAHC, the parentbody of the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoodsand the patron of the Hebrew Union College. Thuswas born the Uniongram, which since 1913 has madepossible the raising of millions of dollars for

scholarships and student aid to rabbinic students aswell as other projects for youth, religious educationand Sisterhood.

The cards now come in various formats and areavailable at the Judaica Shop or by contacting me at573-0323. The monies raised go to the YES (Youth,Education and Special Projects) Fund. Say yes" tothis mitzvah and send a Uniongram today!
