SEPTEMBER 2016/ 5776

On September 5th, we will enter the Hebrew month of Elul – the time to begin

spiritual preparation for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Yamim Noraim – The Days

of Awe.

The name of the month of Elul is spelled with the Hebrew letters of Aleph-Lamed-

Vav-Lamed and is said to be an acronym of “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li,” “I am my Beloved’s

and my Beloved is mine.” This is a quote from Song of Songs chapter 6 verse 3. The

“Beloved” is God and the “I” is the Jewish people. In Aramaic (the vernacular of the

Jewish people at the time the names of the Hebrew months were adopted), the word

Elul means “search,” which is appropriate since this is the time of the year when we

search for what is meaningful within our heart and soul.

At Temple Israel this year, we have four of our congregants who are dedicating their

heart and soul to learning the special cantillation for the High Holy Days. They will be

chanting from Torah on Yom Kippur morning. The cantillation for Rosh Hashanah

morning through Yom Kippur morning is different from the regular Shabbat musical

cantillation you hear when I chant Torah on Shabbat thoughout the rest of the year.

At Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services, you will probably also notice that the

music is different from what you hear on a regular Shabbat. Familiar prayers like the

Blessing over the Yom Tov candles, the Kiddush, the Kaddish, and the

Shehecheyanu have completely different melodies that are used ONLY for the High

Holy Days. These melodies have been cherished throughout our history. They are

called Misinai melodies, as if they were given to the Jewish people when Moses

came down from Mount Sinai with the tablets of The Ten Commandments.

The character of the High Holy Day services are also different. They are meant to be

more formal than the rest of the year. The High Holy Days give us the opportunity for

teshuvah – taking stock of our shortcomings, turning back to God, and pledging to do

what is right and good in the coming year. The music must move us to pray together

as a congregation and also to pray as if we were having our own private, heartfelt

conversation with God.

The Music of Majesty is meant to inspire a sense of awe and grandeur. The

sound of the shofar, played so beautifully by our own Julie Ruden, calls Jews to

celebrate the Birthday of the World. Over and over the musical liturgy sings to

God as “Melech” our sovereign or ruler. You will hear these majestic musical

themes in prayers such as the Sh’ma, the Kedusha, or in the Unetaneh Tokef

portion of the service on Rosh Hashanah morning.

The Music of Meditation is meant to help us reach a deeper, contemplative

prayer and personal reflection. The hauntingly beautiful Misinai themes of Kol

Nidre and the Yizkor service can transport us to that place of depth and truth

within ourselves.

The Music of Meeting helps us to connect to each other – to be a Kahal – a

congregational community. Our voices together bring us closer to the Divine.

There is no warmer feeling in our beautiful sanctuary than when we sing Oseh

Shalom or Avinu Malkeinu together. It is a powerful and spiritual experience

when our congregation sings as one.

Music does more than to enhance life; it becomes a part of life’s very fabric.

With all good wishes as we begin our preparation for a Shana Tova Tikateivu,
