FROM THE RABBI’S STUDY The New Marriage Law in New York State and its Meaning for Conservative Judaism Last month marked an historic evolution in the history of marriage and society when New York State enacted a same-sex marriage law. New Jersey has a civil union law where same-sex couples can register with the state but it is not called “marriage.” While New Jersey’s position is towards the progressive end, New York will now be the destination for same-sex couples seeking to get married. From a Jewish and religious perspective, the New York legislation closes a circle that was
opened up for us in the Conservative Movement five years ago with the Committee on Jewish Law and Standards’ decision to endorse same sex unions and gay and lesbian rabbis and cantors. Since 2006 there has been a growing number of Conservative rabbis and cantors who perform same sex ceremonies. The Movement guidelines remained unclear, both in terms of the endorsement of the ceremonies and of their liturgical and halakhic content. Many had hoped that over the next several years the form of the ceremonies would develop organically. While some of that has happened, the decision in Albany has made the question immediate and pressing. New York will recognize religious solemnizations of same sex marriages as well as civil ceremonies. Conversely, it is now illegal for a rabbi to perform a same sex ceremony in New York without a state license, since the effect of the ceremony is now governed by law. The ceremony itself now has a civil as well as halakhic consequence
The authors of the 2006 Law Committee decision that was determinative for Conservative Movement policy, namely, Rabbis Elliot Dorff, Daniel Nevins and Avram Reisner, are working on a revision of their celebrated responsum that will offer specific guidelines for Conservative rabbis and cantors on how to celebrate same-sex marriages. There was in 2006 a dissenting paper that I authored with my father, Rabbi Robert Fine, and Rabbi Myron Geller. We took a different approach than Rabbis Dorff, Nevins and Reisner. Our paper was in general more liberal except that we saw a solemnization ceremony as a religious requirement. For us, a solemnization ceremony is the central means by which we make intimate relationships sacred. We have therefore decided to work together again towards a re-issue of our paper with and added section on practical applications. In our view, a religious solemnization ceremony between two men or two women, or a same-sex wedding, has immense halakhic and symbolic significance. We are committed to working through the questions of how ancient Jewish legal constructs of heterosexual marriage and divorce can be applied to same-sex couples today so that the same kind of holiness through which brides and grooms are blessed in Jewish tradition can be made available to all Jewish couples. I look forward to sharing with the Temple Israel community the fruits of our labors.

CANTOR CAITLIN BROMBERG Summer Doldrums – Summer Inspiration The term “doldrums” comes from sailing jargon. If a sailboat is in the doldrums, it has no wind in its sails. One is “stuck in the water” and can’t move forward or back until the sails catch the wind again. This is what happens to many people’s Jewish lives in the summer. The Jewish year seems to start with Rosh Hashanah, and for many people it sputters to an end sometime after Pesach. The holiday of Shavuot, which comes in the early summer, is one of the least known or observed holidays in the Jewish calendar. In summer our normal
routines are interrupted by the pleasures of beach, mountains, barbecues, family visits and for some, travel to exotic locations. The kids go to camp and parents go out to play. The kids go to camp… If our kids go to Jewish camps, the summer can be the time that inspires a lifelong love of Judaism. A large percentage of Jewish adults who are observant or involved remember their Jewish camping days with fond nostalgia. Why is the camping experience so dynamic? It seems to be the combination of the fun of outdoor summer activities and peer-group fellowship with Judaism in a much more casual framework than the synagogue. The love of Jewish camp prayer has played a major role in changing the music and style of worship in synagogues in the last 20 years. More congregational singing, more teaching during prayer, more adaptation of the service to make it fun and understandable for young children, families, etc… Judaism can take on a more relaxed, refreshing, portable and adaptable character during the summer. Shabbat dinner, barbecued before sunset and enjoyed outdoors on the deck with friends. (For guidelines on saying Shabbat Kiddush over lemonade, sangria, mojitos or brightly colored tropical drinks, ask me or Rabbi Fine). Take a little bit of Shabbat with you on vacation. Depending on what you are doing, you could slip candlesticks or a challah cover, a benscher or even a card with the Shabbat blessings into your suitcase and say them wherever you are. Add a historic synagogue to your sightseeing in foreign locales. If you are in the presence of truly awesome natural beauty, know that there is a blessing for everything! Rainbows, mountains, waterfalls, beautiful trees, flowers…they all have their blessings. You could say…”Baruch Ata Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-Olam…..and say the rest of it in English. For example….”Who Created Majestic Mountains”. Or you could follow the kids’ example and enjoy some special Jewish learning. One-week or 4-day seminars in beautiful locations are given by many organizations and learning institutions. Go to Israel and spend time in an Ulpan before you go sightseeing, and try out your Hebrew. Or….host one of the Temple Israel Summer Sunday Minyans! These are lovely summer gatherings of friends from the synagogue in each other’s homes for our regular Sunday minyan. After davening the host serves refreshments, from a light breakfast to a sumptuous brunch. And don’t miss the Summer Music Fridays. Just don’t get stuck in the doldrums! Cantor Caitlin Bromberg

As we end the summer months, I would like to reflect upon a remarkable year of education at Temple Israel. We have one of the premier religious school programs in northern New Jersey. Our students leyn Torah earlier, more skillfully and more frequently than anywhere that I am aware of. We send a greater percentage of students to BCHSJS and Prozdor than any other conservative shul. We have much to qvell over. There are a number of moments that I found special and moving. First was this year’s aleph siddur ceremony. I can not describe the priceless looks of pride on our children’s faces as they received their very own siddur with its personalized cover. At graduation this
year, many students spoke of their siddur, their connection to Temple Israel and their complete understanding of their Jewish identity. There is also nothing like seeing the pride and confidence of one of our children as they read Torah for the first time in junior congregation. No one has been able to copy the success of our Torah Club. We should all be proud of the community that we have built, any the future leaders that we are nurturing. But it is not just our children that we educate. This year saw our most successful Adult Education programming in years. Classes held by Rabbi Fine, Cantor Bromberg and Rabbi Litwin were well attended and engaging. This year we are planning another year of must-see programming. Temple Israel is also a great supporter of the Florence Melton School, another opportunity for our adult members to further their Jewish education and connection to Am Yisrael. We are privileged to have many members taking the course and seven who graduated this year. Laura Brody, Bill and Hilarie Kay, Lou and Elyse Levene and David and Peri Namerow all graduated after two years of study. As proud as I am of our children, I am equally as proud of our adults who took time out of their busy schedules to enhance their lives as members of the Jewish community. I realize that summer is a time for vacations, sun and fun, but I do want everyone to remember that Temple Israel is open for business during the summer months. I hope to see you on Shabbat, at minyan or on the beach.
B’shalom Denis

Thank you to Manny Haber and the School Committee for all of their hard work this year and for their help with graduation. Mazal Tov to all of our Kitah Hey graduates and to the following award winners: Sally and David Kirsch Scholarship Endowment Award: Jeremy Lipsky
Sisterhood Community Service Award: Kenneth Crane-Moscowitz Also, at graduation, we mistakenly missed calling Matthew Zachem for a perfect attendance award. Mazal to Matthew and his family for this achievement. I am thrilled that so many of our graduates will be heading to BCHSJS next year for Hebrew High School. It is a testament to our school, our teachers, and especially to the dedication of our parents and students that we have almost the entire class continuing their Jewish education. I always say, I wouldn’t give a driver’s license or scalpel to a 13 year old, how can I entrust Jewish identity to be completely formed at 13… so glad that this class has committed to continuing to learn together. We have a wonderful turn-out for our second year of Project Yoetz, our high school mentoring program. Twenty-five teens have volunteered to give of their time as mentors in our school for next year. I am very excited to have the energy of our teens in the school to act as shadows and role models for all of our students and to support them in their Hebrew learning. Thank you for a very successful school year. If you would like any Hebrew refreshing during the summer, please call me, I’d be happy to help, free of charge. This year our first day of school is September 11, 2011. We will not only mark the 10th anniversary of that difficult day in our country’s history, we will also open school with a flourish of excitement and look toward a new year of learning together, special programs, friendships, and community. I look forward to seeing everyone again on September 11 at 9:30am for the first day of school and of course at High Holy Day services just a few weeks later. Best wishes for a wonderful, relaxing, warm summer. -Rabbi Sharon

ADULT EDUCATION Welcome to Adult Education 2011-12!
Selichot, Saturday, Saturday, September 24, 9:00 pm
Slide Show/Panel Discussion: Temple Israel Goes to Germany, April 2010
Hear all about the Temple Israel tour of Berlin, Cologne, Frankfurt, Worms and Munich, with Rabbi David J. Fine, PhD. Rabbi Fine and trip participants will be present to share their experiences/reflections and answer questions. Stay Tuned: Rabbi Fine will follow up last year’s successful Sunday morning lecture series on German-Jewish history with an equally enriching, inspirational Sunday morning course: “The History of the Land and Peoples of Israel.” This class will culminate in two Trips to Israel in late June/July 2012: a family trip, appropriate for young children, and a unique interfaith tour, in partnership with St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church and with the Ridgewood Muslim congregation, which worships at St. Elizabeth’s, located on Fairmount Road. Other highlights of the 2011-12 Adult Ed programming, currently in the planning stage include: a scholar-in-residence lecture and other offerings from Cantor Caitlin Bromberg and Rabbi Sharon Litwin. Finally, Rabbi Fine will continue his irresistible Tuesday Evening Talmud Study. We ended on a cliffhanger this year, so join us to find out where we left off and what happens next! New students always welcome, and no prior knowledge of Hebrew is required. To support this year’s Adult Education Program, please consider a donation in one of the following categories: Benefactors - $500; Supporters -- $136; Patrons - $54, and Friends - $36. Please make checks payable to Temple Israel and note Adult Education in the memo line. Donations of any amount are welcome, and they will be acknowledged in Temple Talk. The Board of Directors and the entire Temple Israel community welcomes Aidan Seltsam’s new sister, Maeve Elizabeth Seltsam. We wish Maureen Nassan, our office administrator and her husband, Bob Seltsam, a lifetime of mazel and simchas, happiness and celebrations.

TIKKUN OLAM New Fund for Feeding the Hungry We are pleased to announce that we have established a special fund to be used to advance our synagogue’s longstanding commitment to feeding the homeless and the hungry in our local community. For many years we operated a shelter at our building during the winter months with meals provided by a variety of member families. More recently we have sponsored quarterly dinners at Family Promise of Bergen County in Hackensack. The new fund can be used to help finance those quarterly meals and may be used for other projects related to feeding the hungry as approved by the Board. Anyone who advances monies for the homeless feeding as authorized by the Tikkun Olam chair will be able to submit the receipts for all or part of their expenditures and receive reimbursement from the Fund if they wish to do so. This fund is named the "Susan Reeve/Temple Israel Fund for Feeding the Hungry" in honor of a young woman (non-member) who suffered a tragic death in 1975. Additional contributions are welcome and anyone wishing to contribute to the fund should write a check to Temple Israel and note, either on the check or in a cover note that it is for the Susan Reeve/Temple Israel Fund for Feeding the Hungry. This fund is not an endowment. The principal can and will be used to help feed the hungry. The Fall Season brings many of the traditional Temple Israel Tikkun Olam activities.
Please mark your calendars for the following: Annual River Clean Up ---Sunday October 2 In conjunction with Wildscape and the Interfaith Community we are returning to Gypsy Pond to continue the clean up efforts we started last year. Our ability to have a significant impact in removing a myriad of trash that pollutes this site is huge ---paying dividends for the surrounding community and the park area. Come join us!
Kol Nidre Food and Clothing Drive—Friday, October 7 Canned and non-perishable foods and personal and household goods are still in great demand at Ridgewood Social Service which supports families in our neighboring towns. Clothing for all ages will be collected and donated to Big Brother/ Big Sister. Our support for those in need in these very difficult economic times cannot be underestimated. We will be collecting these items before services on Kol Nidre. See flyer for more details. Homeless Hosting---Monday October 31 and December 19 Join us for either preparing food prior to the date or serving on site on either or both Mondays in Hackensack at the Homeless Shelter. This mitzvah has been and continues to be a humbling experience for all who participate. Interfaith Blood Drive—Sunday November 6 Our biannual Interfaith Blood Drive will be held at Temple Israel; as is our custom our friends at St. Elizabeth’s will be joining us. We have set the standard for collecting the most blood from a faith-based effort. We will be able to accept platelet as well as “double” donations. Please hold the date! YOUTH HAPPENINGS Kadima has come to an end for this year. We had a great year. We had our overnight and Shabbaton which were well attended and en-joyed. We had many different events this year such as bowling, Monster Golf, making lunches for the homeless, cooking, and Mystery Movie Day just to name a few. Lounge Night each month was a great time for snacking and social-izing with friends. Our eighth grade friends who are leaving us now will be greatly missed and are always welcomed to pop in for visit. We wel-come our fifth grade friends who will be joining us next year!!! I will begin making the calendar for next year shortly, so if anyone has ideas or suggestions for events for next year just drop me an email. I hope everyone has a wonderful sum-mer! Morah Felicia [email protected]
Masorti’s creative “Yellow Pages” poster/ad campaign cataloguing the livelihoods of Talmudic sages caught the attention of Jerusalem-ites and the Israeli press as public attention in Israel focused on gov-ernment stipends for full-time yeshiva students. Now available as a poster in English through Haggadahs-R-Us, it is a terrific conversation starter for classrooms, in your sukkah or just about anywhere you gather with friends and family. 50% of the prof-its from the poster sales will go to support the Masorti movement in Israel. $11.95 for 18”x23.5” full-color laminated poster; $8.95 each for 2 or more copies; bulk rates available. Shipping additional: $3.41 for 1 or 2 copies, via USPS Media Mail. To order, call 877-308-4175 or visit the merchant’s website at: http://haggadahsrus.com/

El Al celebrated the end of the year with a Pool Party at the home of Hayley and Jeff Gluck on Thursday, June 16 from 5pm-7pm. All incoming El Al-niks (current 3rd graders) were invited as well as siblings and parents. Dinner was served. Rabbi Sharon [email protected]

Endowment Funds Donations & Dedications While Judaism itself can thrive without reference to finances, a community of Jews who are committed to the purpose of the synagogue—learning, worship, and fellowship—does need financial resources to help each other and themselves.
Most of us recognize our obligation to maintain membership in Temple Israel and to support it by payment of annual dues. However, dues alone do not cover all of our costs. There is a continuing need for donations to help assure the synagogue’s strength and development .
