It is a compilation of stories, rituals, architecture, forms, format etc., too rich, too available, and too wise to leave untapped. Indeed, when the history of its biblical timing seems to coincide and even reinforce current similar contemporary events and chronology, updating, modernizing and application are not only justified even welcoming. It may also help us survive our fragmented times. con’t on page 6

Rabbi’s Reflections ~~ Rabbi Devora Buchen

The Shofar

Is nothing sacred? Are we allowed to change or apply even our most hallowed traditions with impunity? A number of years ago during an intense political campaign the conservative candidate accused his opponent of being a liberal. As if that were not enough, he went on to define a liberal as one who regards the 10 Commandments as 10 suggestions. Are our religious events and artifacts too fragile to survive an updating journey? Our sages urge the rabbis to persuade all to be there to witness and share the special Sinai experience. Then too, there is the special reinforcing urgency of the timing. The exodus of the past was fading, the present was dizzying at the base of the mountain, and the future was put in jeopardy by the idolatry of the golden calf. No easy time but it all worked out. Why? Because the 10 Commandments accomplished many miracles; they restored our holy connections to the past, the present and above all to a Jewish future. They gave us back our sanity, self-worth, pride, and purpose at a time when all was shaky. And finally, they reminded us that without an aspirational vision of moral behavior the people perish. My argument then is that the Torah is not locked in time nor stuck in context.

Well, it’s summer. That means that our programs and meetings at Temple Beth Shalom pretty much go on hiatus until we start up again at the end of August in preparation for the High Holidays. It’s a time here of renewal, as we take a breath and gear up for the year ahead. Although our schedules may have slowed up a bit, we are still busy–with Membership, High Holiday planning, and temple fall program planning. Congregations are defined by much more than their lay and spiritual leaders. They are defined by the Jewish values they portray, their history of serving the community, and much, much more. Temple Beth Shalom is the oldest Reform temple in Cape Coral. Many of our congregants have been members for decades. And for newer congregants, Temple Beth Shalom is defined by its celebration of diversity and inclusiveness. For some, Temple Beth Shalom is a place to attend Yahrzeit services or life events, and so they pay dues, but are not otherwise actively involved in the goings on of the Temple community. As Jews, it is important to always find the meaning and make the connection between the actions that we take and how it impacts our life, as well as why we choose to do it. It is a mitzvah to donate to charity, but why do you, as an individual, choose to do it? What impact are you hoping to make in your community? For everyone who made a donation to Temple Beth Shalom, I encourage you to look beyond the “what” of the donation (much needed repairs to the Temple, security and the expansion of Jewish Education to name a few) and consider the “why” of your action. Beyond that, of course, I encourage you to donate and allow this gift to our cherished congregation fill you with joy. Please, take a moment to recognize the comprehensiveness of our congregation. This year I hope that with the diverse nature of all of us, we can begin to seek answers to the following: How will Temple Beth Shalom define itself to our congregation, to the larger Jewish community and to the community at large? What will be our goals in the upcoming year and in the years ahead? What will be our mission? What are our strengths? Our weaknesses? Our successes? Our failures? And regardless of the results, what will we have learned and what or how might we do better? It is my hope, in the coming days, to establish a Planning Committee to look at these questions and tasks. I invite all who wish to be a part of meeting the challenge of planning for the future to contact me. In the meantime, I wish everyone a restful and refreshing summer, safe travels if that is part of your summer plan, and the rejuvenation and renewal that this season offers. Shalom,

Harvey

Sisterhood is looking forward to the coming year with great enthusiasm. Our yearly luncheon was well enjoyed by our members who brought their baby pictures to share. Many oohs and aahs were heard. Rosh Chodesh was at Fern's house where the movie " Gefilte Fish Chronicles" encouraged much discussion of family traditions. The High Holidays will be a time for reflection and cooking as we prepare for Selichot, Rosh Hashanah and Break the Fast. Leslie Vollmer will be chairing a fun filled afternoon on Sunday, November 4 as we will have a "Purse, Jewelry and Dessert Party!" For a mere $5, guests will have the opportunity to win purses, pocketbooks or handbags (whatever you call them) as well as jewelry items while enjoying dessert. Congregants are encouraged not only to attend, but to bring friends.Receive bonus raffle tickets for each friend you bring, Items needed for this event are gently loved purses and costume jewelry. Paid reservations and donations by October 19 will get the donor bonus raffle tickets for each item. Please drop off items with your name attached to them to the temple office by October 19. Checks should be made payable to TBS Sisterhood with Party in the memo. Don't miss this exciting event!

BROWN BAG LUNCH WITH THE RABBI

The ShofarPage 6

(con’t from the 1st page)

We are living now in times of multiple disconnects, unable to find a coherent unified voice to address paralyzing divisiveness, and to be able once and for all to judge and condemn dreadful acts in the unequivocal power and finality of “Thou Shalt Not.”

To experience the catharsis of justice you shall not let anyone else do this for you. Besides, indignation will make the task fast righteous and furious. Here are my 10? What are yours? 1. Thou shall reject all acts and thoughts of hate crimes and racism. 2. Thou shall ban the sale of all assault rifles. 3. Thou shall stop polluting and poisoning our air, water, food and livestock. 4. Thou shall cut the defense budget and create the Cyber Counter Intelligence Department. 5. Thou shall stop favoring in supporting the rich. 6. Thou shall support the health and welfare of the old and infirm by not reducing

Medicare or Social Security. 7. Thou shall make such support need based for all including retired politicians. 8. Thou shall create a national mental health screening program. 9. Thou shall review the entire criminal system. 10. Thou shall offer free college admissions , reduce tuition loan rates

for all students, regardless of age, gender, or ethnicity. To be a Jew, to be an American, in the 21st-century is to be offered a gift. The gift means

making choices for a moral, ethical, and cultural life. A life for our children to inherit.

Time flies when we’re having fun. When Robin asked me to write an article for the Shofar on Membership I said, “Already? Didn’t I just write one and give it to you?” Actually that was 3 months ago. So, are you having fun yet? Tell others about our social activities, our lively services, our enthusiastic Rabbi and most of all our love for one another because that will bring people to our door. Several people have heard of our Temple and have come to check us out. We have one new member, Danielle Urowsky, who is ready to jump in and help. She has been coming to services each week but please welcome her by introducing yourself if you haven’t met her yet. Have a good summer everyone!Shalom, Peri

The love I have for the children of Cape Coral is truly a blessing. I would like to give thanks to the following companies and people that have supported to feed the children with their donations. They are: Metro Dinner, Tyson Eyes, Biaou Salon, Millennium Physician, Chips Auto, Hair Shapes, Weight Watchers and my Temple Beth Shalom members Maxine & Bob Morris. I would like to thank Tobi Gold for the beautiful flyer explaining the Summer Food Drive for Children. Please remember to keep the food coming for the children for the months of June and July.

The past few months have been terrific. Our Veterans Service, thanks to our Rabbi and Chorus, was terrific and our Passover Seder was a great success. Now we can enjoy the summer as we look forward to the High Holidays. Your Religious Practices committee is still working hard to make your Friday night services an enjoyable and enlightening experience. We also recently had a well-attended meeting for our congregation where the procedures for our Torah Service were explained and our Rabbi answered the many questions that were asked. There was a lot of information and everyone present left knowing something that they did not know before. Thank you Rabbi for being there for us.

If anybody still has any questions about the service you can still e-mail me at [email protected] and I will answer them as best as I can. If I can’t, I’ll ask the Rabbi first. Naturally, if you would like to participate in this committee we would be delighted to have your help. Please contact me and I’ll be glad to describe the work we do. There really is nothing more rewarding than helping prepare for our holidays and Shabbat Services.

On a personal note, we recently suffered the loss of two members of our extended family, Joe Studna, a long time member, and Jay Meisel, son of Beverly Meisel. In both cases, Rabbi conducted beautiful and thoughtful services that no doubt brought great comfort to friends and family alike. Joe was a personal friend for many years and a strong supporter of our Temple. His wife, Gale, will continue to be a member of the TBS family and we thank her for generously requesting that contributions be made to us in Joe’s name. Joe and Jay will both be deeply missed.

The last three months of Temple Beth Shalom Religious School saw the children participating in a variety of holiday celebrations. On March 1st, the students presented their Purim Spiel written by Morah Aliza Bental, after which the children ate traditional Hamentaschen. On March 29th, the students participated in a model seder conducted by Rabbi Buchen. A modified seder meal was served with the help of Melissa Greenbaum, Suzie Hershfield and Rena Myers. On April 19th, the students presented their Holocaust Remembrance in the sanctuary led by Morah Aliza. The children lit memorial candles and recited stories of the Holocaust. On April 19th, the students celebrated Israel's 70th birthday with a Yom Ha'Atzmaut celebration. Hotdogs, Israeli salad, hummus and chips were served. And finally, the students celebrated the last day of class on May 3rd with a discussion led by Rabbi Buchen and Morah Aliza followed by an end-of-year party.Three of our TBS students will become a Bar Mitzvah this year. They are Greg Urban on August 18th, Ian DiLeonardo on September 22nd and Edison Greenbaum on October 20th. Mazel Tov!

To the TBS Family

I will be on vacation for the summer. Wishing everyone a wonderful summer.

On Friday, May 24th, the temple was home to a special memorial service for the SW Florida Jewish Community honoring veterans of Florida. To honor our fallen brothers and sisters in Afghanistan and Iraq, members of Jewish War Veterans Post 400 read their names aloud.

The National Museum of Jewish Military History currently lists 57 identified Jewish service people who have given their lives in defense of our country in Iraq and Afghanistan. They are gone but never forgotten, and their memories will be honored in perpetuity.

Participating in this beautiful and moving service were our Rabbi and our choir who sang rousing patriotic songs and the songs of each of the military services.

A Lee Health officer received the Cape Coral Community Foundation’s top honor, the Elmer Tabor Award. Scott Kashman, a member of Temple Beth Shalom, is Chief Acute Care Officer at Lee Health, and was honored for his outstanding philanthropy in the community and his leadership that inspires others to be generous. The Cape reception, held Thursday at The Cape Coral Yacht Club, celebrates the accomplishments of those who give back. “This is a huge honor and completely unexpected. Cape Coral has embraced me and my family since we moved here,” Kashman said. “ We wanted to focus on a shared vision of a healthier Cape Coral and Southwest Florida. The community has rallied around the work we have done.” Scott Kashman came to Cape Coral in A u g u s t 2 0 11 t o b e c a m e c h i e f administrative officer at Cape Coral Hospital before assuming his current position since January 2017.

Buchen Blvd. comes to TBS

At the Honorary Banquet that was held in January of 2018,TBS members donated money to have a sign put up in honor of Rabbi Buchen. The sign was installed the week of July 1, 2018 and will stay up for one year. The sign is located on 8th Avenue by the Temple.

I want to thank my Temple family for all the cards, messages and attendance at  Joe's memorial.  It was a tough year, but G-d got us through it, and Joe is in a better place now.  The outpouring of love has made me decide to remain a member of Temple Beth Shalom, and I will try to attend High Holy Day services each year for Joe.  Love you all.
