DIVREI HA RAV THE RABBI’S WORDS While we, as a congregation, will be active over the summer, June generally is seen as the “end” of the program year – school ends, confirmation takes place, Shavuot concludes the Spring festival cycle and program events are on hiatus for the summer. While we may be a smaller congregation, we are certainly “not short” when we consider the depth and breadth of our programs and activities at Temple Beth-El. Last June our Israel trip went on tour to Prague and then Israel. It was an eye-opening experience, in particular for our first time travelers to Israel. We know that their experience is now a model for future trips that will be scheduled within the next few years. Our Days of Awe season from Slichot to Simchat Torah remain awe inspiring and spiritual. October and November have featured the opening sessions of our program of adult learning; this year was no exception – with the visit of Rabbi Niles Goldstein and our class on Kabbalah. Our Brotherhood Hayride is now an annual event thanks to the Hatfields who graciously host us. Our Adult B’nai Mitzvah class held its first session in November and has been going strong since. In December our teens went to Israel and we celebrated Chanukah at the annual Sisterhood Chanukah dinner -- always a highlight of our year. In January, we initiated our Introduction to Judaism class, welcomed members who received a Hebrew name at our Naming Shabbat and our Adult Choir again stirred us with their talent and passion at Shabbat Shira. Purim, Passover and Israel-related programs have kept us busy this spring. Now summer. As we reflect on the year, it is time to rest, relax, recharge. As many of us will be traveling this summer, I encourage you to add a Jewish component to your journey. Many places in the United States have sites of Jewish interest – historic synagogues, museums, monuments and more. For those traveling to Europe, Jewish history is abundant, as are sites of that history. Visiting Jewish sites will enrich your travels and expand your appreciation of being Jewish. For those staying closer to home, summer is a time for reading. Linda Dunn can recommend many worthy reads with Jewish content. Same is true for movies. Perhaps you would like to add a Jewish component to your hobby – do Jewish art, learn Jewish cooking – the options are without limit. I will be away most of June as will Rabbi Stevens. Rabbi Ellen Dreyfus will be on call when needed for life cycle needs. I look forward to seeing everyone on July 3. Stay tuned for the summer activities at Temple. Take care,

Rabbi Len Zukrow

Shavuot at Temple

Temple Beth-El is hosting this year’s Shavuot program on Saturday, June 11 at 7:30 - 9:30 pm. Join our friends from Congregation Beth Israel for this annual Tikkun Leil Shavuot, an evening of learning. We are privileged to have 3 rabbis as teachers: Mordechai Levin from CBI, and our own Leonard Zukrow and Mike Stevens. The program will include Havdalah and traditional Shavuot refreshments.

From twice Past President, Linda Dunn: “We bid farewell to Paul Mesirow, who passed away this Tuesday. You were a force in the life of Temple Beth-El, serving as past-President of Brotherhood, former Sunday School teacher, organizer of numerous Temple outings to White Sox games, and lover of all Jewish music, especially "Fiddler on the Roof." As Temple's unofficial Tevye, it is your voice that we will hear whenever we listen to "If I Were a Rich Man."”

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS Francie Gerson, Facilitator

I want to thank the entire staff for their magnificent job this past year. The remarks

made by our students praising their teachers…that told the story. We are lucky to have

such a dedicated staff. They are about not only teaching content, but engaging our

students in the entire process of learning about Judaism.

I also want to thank parents who supported their children and helped in various ways to

make this school year such a success. I look forward to next year (yes, plans are

already in the making).

As always, if you have any questions, suggestions or complaints…I’m always open to

hear them.

Mazel Tov to Lilah Kreis who became a Bat Mitzvah on May 21.

Also, I look forward to Confirmation on June 10. Congratulations to Katie Dedelow, Meg

Dedelow, Aaron Hanania, Ben Malum, Eli Nirenberg and Zachary Triumph.

I’m excited for Aaron Brody, Ava, Naomi and Mira Fefferman, Lilah Kreis, Danielle

Lerner, Katelyn Marks, Simon Nirenberg, Logan Stein and Zachary Triumph who will be

attending OSRUI camp this summer. I know you’ll all have an amazing experience.

Everyone…have a great summer break and look for exciting and new things that will be

offered next school year.

Francie

As part of my birthday observance, I will read from the Torah on Friday

Sisterhood News Judy Stevens, President

I am very excited about the upcoming events taking place at Temple Beth-El this summer, hosted by

Sisterhood.

June 11 at 12:00 pm will be the Sisterhood Closing Luncheon. Our speaker, Judge Diane Schneider,

will be speaking about "Sisters in Law: Notable Women in the Legal Profession." I am excited to have

her as our speaker, and her knowledge about the law, not only in Indiana, but in general, will be a great

asset to her presentation.

The closing lunch does not mean that Sisterhood doesn’t do anything all summer. We continue with our

monthly meetings the second Thursday of every month at 7:30 pm. If you would like to know what

happens at those meetings, please feel free to check us out. It's a time for our Sisterhood business

meeting, as well as time for great discussions about Sisterhood and where we are heading.

July 3 is one of our annual fundraisers. For the fireworks in Munster, we will open up the parking lot

for those who wish to park there for the evening. The cost is five dollars. Please come and park at

Temple Beth-El, bring a chair, and join us for a fun evening.

July 5 is the time to learn a new artistic skill. It is called Zentangle. "The Zentangle method is easy to

learn and relaxing, and a way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns." Please

register, and let us know you are coming. The time will be 7-9 pm, and the cost is $35, which includes

all the materials you will need to begin this fun art. You will be able to take your supplies home with

you and continue to Zentangle if you wish at home.

July 21 is our Paint Night. The instructors will be from The Center for Visual and Performing Arts. It

will be a fun-filled three hours, at the end of which you will be able to take home a painting with a

Jewish theme. You do not have to be an artist, because the instructors will be there to guide you and to

help you take home a piece of art you will be proud of. Please let the Temple office know you will be

coming.

Please do remember the “Smart Chicks and Old Bags" event. The date is Tuesday, September 13, 2016.

Please bring in your gently-used purses and bags. We welcome jewelry that you no longer use. You

can bring your items to Temple now. If you are interested in helping with this event, please join us for

our introductory meeting on June 10 at 1:30 pm. We need everybody's help.

And last, please come and see our Sisterhood gift shop. It’s many fine items make perfect gifts for a

variety of celebrations, and your purchases will also help out Sisterhood.

Please mark all the above events on your calendar, and join us for as many as you are able.

NEWS FROM BROTHERHOOD Larry Gill, President

We are busy planning fall programs. These activities are not quite ready for publication at this time. For the summer, we are planning to visit a car museum or two. One is local; the other is in South Bend and/or Shipshewana. Car-pooling can be arranged for the non-local museum outing. That event will be an all-day trip. The local museum will be an evening and dinner program. Please let me know if you are interested in a local or a “road trip” outing. After I hear from enough people I will schedule it for the end of July or the first week of August. Call the office 219/934-9600 with your preference, or you can reach me at 219/741-8757. We have a Blood Drive scheduled for September 21. You can register online or call the office.

Thanks to all who helped to make the Deli Days fundraiser such a success! We

appreciate your support.

Thanks to Sam Coltun for spearheading this Temple fundraiser. Without his hard

work and phone calls, it would not have been nearly so successful.

The next TBE book discussion is scheduled for Tuesday, July 12, 2016, at 1:30 pm in the Bertha and Dan Rabin

Library. At that time we will review Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain.

“In this powerful novel, Chamberlain peels back the disturbing truths about the eugenics sterilization program

implemented in North Carolina during the 1960s. Two voices reveal the heartbreak of the state-mandated

program, which sterilized the mentally ill, African Americans, those with disabilities, and women on welfare.

At 15, Ivy Hart does her best to hold together family life with her diabetic grandmother; her older sister, Mary

Ella, who is mentally challenged; and Mary Ella's baby. They live and work as tenants on a tobacco farm in ru-

ral North Carolina. In 1960, Jane Forrester marries a doctor and, against his wishes, takes a job as a social

worker with the Harts as clients. She's idealistic and shocked to learn that social workers have the power to

petition to have clients sterilized. Jane narrates the story of two young women on a collision course with trag-

edy. Chamberlain brings to light the horrors inflicted for years on victims of the eugenics sterilization pro-

gram. By allowing Ivy and Jane to tell their stories, Chamberlain humanizes the survivors. This is a troubling

account, considering how recently involuntary sterilization occurred in this country. Book groups and fans of

Jodi Picoult should appreciate this work.” -- (Library Journal, August 1, 2013)

Copies of the book will be available at Temple the week of June 6. Questions? Contact Linda Dunn. Newcomers to this Temple activity are always welcome!

This important informational meeting will feature a panel of speakers from local law enforcement, the FBI, the US Attorney's Office and the Anti-Defamation League who will speak about current threats facing the local Jewish community, including crime, anti-Semitism and terrorism. The panel will also discuss safety and security measures that our community can take to avoid being victimized, and how we can train and prepare for issues we may face prior to, during and after a threat or an adversarial attack. Questions will be welcome at the conclusion of the formal presentation, and light refreshments will be served.
