DIVREI HA RAV THE RABBI’S WORDS

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That. . . . . Yiddish/Jewish cooking is famous for the handfuls of spices that enhance and enrich the dish. This mes-sage follows in that vein, as we look back and ahead. As you read this, it was a year ago that Karen and I were finishing our packing preparing for our journey to the great Midwest. What a year it has been! My thanks are bountiful to so many who first welcomed us, invited us to dinners and desserts, came to share in the joy of Shabbat, and supported our educational endeavors and much more. A recent event of note that capped this year was our closing school assembly at which students selected organizations to support with the monies raised for Tzedakah. What happened was quite remarkable. Parents, who came early for the closing program, joined in the selection process. Initially, I wasn’t sure if this was right as this was the students’ activity and then I realized that something special and wonderful was happening. Our school community – students and their parents were engaged in an important Jew-ish activity and we all were feeling good about the process and the outcome. This event then serves as the transition and as a model of what Temple Beth-El is and where we are go-ing. We are an extended family that enjoys being together, enjoys being active and engaged. We recog-nize and realize that when we are together and doing things together as a community it is a Jewish event. The essential element is US being present. As the High Holy Days – the Yamim Noraim – are quite early this year, we will have a “short” summer. Nonetheless, as we engage in planning and preparations, we have great events planned and new programs/experiences to try. Three times over the summer, we will worship at 6:00 PM and then join for Shabbat dinner – dates are June 7; July 12 & 26 and Au-gust 9. On these dates, we will NOT have a 7:30 PM worship. Our expectation is that we will find this format will enable us to do what we do best – spend time together as an extended family. Please share your response to this new format, we expect that it will be one we come to like and perhaps will calendar in an early service and dinner during the rest of the year. Matt Fefferman, as our president, is leading our engagement in the life of the Temple. His effort to revive and reinvigorate our committees will have positive results in the program and operation of our Temple. Again, the essential element here is US being present, engaged and involved – all members are encour-aged to serve on a committee of your interest. More ideas and more input – the better the result. We live in exciting times at Temple Beth-El. It has been an honor, pleasure, and fun to be your rabbi this first year. I am excited about this year to come with our trip to Israel next summer as one of our many highlights. Stay tuned and be here. Best wishes for a wonderful and safe summer!

FROM THE PRESIDENT . . .

I attended the URJ’s 15th Annual Scheidt Seminar in Atlanta, GA from April 25-28, 2013. The Scheidt Seminar is a North American Training Institute for Congregational Presidents and Presi-dents-Elect. There were new or incoming Presidents from 117 congregations who attended the training. The staff and faculty included:

Rabbi Rick Jacobs, URJ President Steve Sacks, Chairman of the URJ Board Rabbi Dan Freelander, URJ Senior VP Dale Glasser, Dale Glasser Training and Consulting Rabbi Sam Joseph, Professor of Jewish Education and Leadership Beth Schafer, Music and Positive Jewish Living

In four days I was immersed in intense training, study, worship and fellowship. Topics included temple management, board training, fundraising, and innovative worship. There was also an idea exchange that allowed Congregation Presidents to present a program that was successful for their congregation. I presented “Purim Palooza” and it received a warm response.

One of the highlights included a presentation by URJ President, Rabbi Rick Jacobs. He spoke about some of the challenges faced by the URJ, member congregations and American Jews as a whole. His talk was inspiring and solution-focused. It was comforting to know that many of the challeng-es that we face here at Temple Beth-El are also being experienced by other member congrega-tions. We are not alone. It was also good to hear that the URJ is taking steps to assist congrega-tions with these hurdles.

Attending the Scheidt Seminar was an educational and inspirational experience. I’m looking for-ward to implementing some of what I learned in the upcoming weeks and months.

Shalom

Matthew

From the Chair of the Chair Committee As the Chairperson of the Setup Committee, I want to be sure that everybody is familiar with the proce-dure necessary to obtain assistance with the set-up of a room for a Temple event. Just send me an e-mail with the details approximately two weeks before the event. I will need to know the event’s date, time and approximate duration. I can then draft an e-mail for Sandy to forward on to the congregation e-mail list to round up the troops. This way, Sandy just has one person to deal with. Also, it is important to have one person who is aware of, and is coordinating, multiple events or needs. People often talk to me about upcoming events at an Oneg or at a Board Meeting. Unfortunately, those conversations often get lost in the mess that is my mind. By the time I have had conversations with one or two other people, I may have forgotten about the request entirely. I certainly will not remember times and dates. That is why I ALWAYS tell people that I need the timely e-mail reminder. (If you do not e-mail, a phone call will do, but please ask me several times if I am writing everything down!) Unfortunately, I occasionally get an e-mail or a phone call on the Saturday morning before a Monday event. By that time, there is really not much I can do. I may be having a busy weekend, and therefore am unable to get to my e-mail until Sunday night, and Sandy is not in the office on the weekends, so I can't call her to discuss what is needed. And, of course, we want to get the e-mail out to our membership in plenty of time for them to make plans to come in and help! Thanks for your help, Michael Oberman

NEWS FROM BROTHERHOOD Paul Mesirow, President

On May 16, Brotherhood held a planning meeting and dinner, and with the help of the few members at-tending, managed to come up with events through May, 2014. Our year is progressing well – dinner on May 8 at Jedi’s Garden followed by a trip to Konnie Kuiper’s Car Museum, both well-attended. A good time was had by all. Next on the agenda is the Brotherhood-sponsored Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, June 10, from 2:30-

6:30 p.m. We need about six people to volunteer for set up and take down, registration, direction, and

post-donation refreshments.

We’ll be helping to park cars and sell refreshments to people attending the Centennial Park fireworks on

July 3, and help Sisterhood maintain crowd control.

August is usually a quiet time for Brotherhood – but not the NEW Brotherhood! We’ll be helping with

Sunday School registration on Sunday, August 11, with a cookout from 11 a.m. to noon. We’ll need a few

people to help with this, not so much with the cooking, but with the set-up and take-down of the grill and

clean-up. Later in August, the Brotherhood is planning a trip to the RAILCATS game (more about this in

July’s bulletin).

We’re keeping busy and providing a good time and learning experiences for our synagogue and our Tem-ple membership! Join us, won’t you???

Are You Ready for Some ‘Baseball?’

We have seven tickets left for the 1:10 p.m. Chicago White Sox/Cleveland Indians game on Sunday, June 30, at U.S. Cellular Field. This being Family Day the kids will be delighted to meet Southpaw and run the bases after the game! Tickets are available for $15/person and will be released when you bring in your payment. While we are not selling parking passes, parking is available at the game for $10.00.

OSRUI will be offering tours of camp this summer so prospective campers and their families can see OSRUI in action. The dates are: Sunday, June 23rd; Sunday, July 7th; and Sunday, July 31st. All tours begin at 1:00 p.m. and last about 90 minutes. There’s more information on our website: http://osrui.urjcamps.org/yearround/prospectivecampers/

SISTERHOOD NEWS Kristin Stern, President

In the May bulletin I looked back on my time as Sisterhood President here at Temple Beth-El. We have done some wonderful things in the past several years, both inside our walls and in the greater communi-ty. Our June 2 luncheon and installation will bring us new leadership to continue with all of our work. Invitations for the event have gone out, and the afternoon should be fun. I hope to see many of you there to enjoy the food, friendship, and entertainment in addition to showing your support of our incoming of-ficers.

Saturday, June 15 is the date for this year's Area Day which will be held at Temple Anshe Sholom in Olympia Fields. Area Day is a good way to meet other women in nearby congregations. We spend Shab-bat together with a service and learning, and of course, eating. Many of the ideas we've used for pro-grams and special events have come from get-togethers like Area Day. More details about the day are elsewhere in the bulletin.

One of the ways our Sisterhood will be recognizing the WRJ Centennial is with a Maj-a-thon on July 21 starting at 12:00 noon. The goal is to collectively play at least 100 hours. All of our nominal registration fee of $5.00 will go to the Women of Reform Judaism YES (Youth, Education, and Special Projects) fund. While this is not a tournament, we will have some prizes. You don't have to play continually, and re-freshments will be available. All players are welcome, so let your Maj playing friends know that they are invited, too. Come by yourself, come with your group, but please come and enjoy the fun!

At our last business meeting we discussed our Little Sisters program. We feel that including our school aged girls in Sisterhood activities in some way is important, but that this perhaps not the best way for our congregation. What we will try is to have at least one event per year geared especially for the younger girls which will be open to all girls attending with a Sisterhood member. No membership for the girls will be required. We want to encourage as many girls as possible to benefit from the programs we put to-gether for them.

During the month of June our membership letters for 2013-2014 will be mailed. Please take the time to either renew your membership or become a new member. Consider being a member at a higher level than last year. All of the work that our Sisterhood does is only possible because of the support of our members. As I said last month, there is no "I" in team, and as the WRJ tag line says, we are truly "stronger together."

Finally, I want to thank all of you who have supported me throughout my term as Sisterhood President!

YES Fund Maj-a-thon

Sunday, July 21, 2013 from 10:00

Let's play for a combined total of 100 hours to celebrate the Women of Reform Judaism's Centennial year!

Mark both events on your calendar to be a part of the fun.

The cost for listing your family in the booklet is a minimum $7.50. This is a major fundraiser for Sisterhood.

Please mail this form and your check,

made payable to Temple Beth-El Sisterhood, to:

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS Francie Gerson, Facilitator

Congratulations to all our teachers for their special words spoken at the Family Worship service in May. We can all be proud of each and every one of our staff…how lucky for our children to have such dedicated and caring teachers! And, also mazel tov to all of our children who presented what all they learned in a very creative and in-formative way during our assembly on the last day of Sunday school. Let’s not forget Hebrew…We celebrated Shavuot with a special dinner and good bye party for Omri. He was an inspiration and fun addition to our school and we thank him for all of his special programs, games, and learning opportunities about Israel. We will miss him. In August we will welcome Mor, our new Shaliach. I’ve already been in touch with him. He will also be a very important part of our religious school. I hope everyone will enjoy their summer vacation. I’d love to see all of you from time to time in the next couple of months. Check out the calendar and bring the family to some of our summer services that will include pot luck dinners as well as some special programs Shalom, Francie

Afternoon Book Discussion

The next Temple book discussion is scheduled for Thursday, July 11, 2013, at 1:30 pm in the Bertha and Dan Rabin Library. You’re invited to read Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston. “When Their Eyes Were Watching God first appeared in 1937, it was well-received by white critics as an intimate portrait of southern blacks, but African-American reviewers rejected the novel as pandering to white audiences and perpetuating stereotypes of blacks as happy-go-lucky and ignorant. Unfortunately, the novel and its author, Zora Neale Hurston, were quickly forgotten. But within the last twenty years it has received attention from scholars who praise its unique contribution to African-American literature, and it has become one of the newest and most original works to consistently appear in college courses across the country and to be included in updated versions of the American literary canon. The book has been admired by African-Americans for its celebration of black culture and dialect and by feminists for its depiction of a woman’s progress towards self-awareness and fulfillment. But the novel continues to re-ceive criticism for what some see as its lack of engagement with racial prejudice and its ambivalent treatment of relations between the sexes. No one disputes, though, its impressive use of metaphor, dia-lect, and folklore of southern rural blacks, which Hurston studied as an anthropologist, to reflect the rich cultural heritage of African Americans.” (Novels for Students, Volume 3. Detroit: Gale, c1998, p.300) Copies of the book will be available in the Temple office and at the Munster Branch Library (8701 Calu-met Avenue) in early June. Newcomers to this Temple activity are warmly invited.

Summer Shabbat Dinners and Services

This summer we will gather on June 7, July 12, July 26, and August 9 for community Shabbat dinner and worship.

Rabbi Zukrow will provide the entrée and members will be asked to bring side dishes, drinks and desserts.

Details will follow – please be sure to mark your calendars and plan to join us for summer Shabbat fun.

We’d like to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone for making

our 25th

anniversary celebration so special – for the delicious anniversary cake,

for the leaf on the Tree of Life, for Rabbi Zukrow’s beautiful and thoughtful

blessing and, to all of our Temple Beth-El friends, for being there to celebrate

with us – todah rabbah!
