Obon: Reflect and Persevere Rev. David K. Fujimoto

Its that time of the year again! It’s Obon Season!!! There are many things that comes to mind when we think of Obon. The sounds of the taiko, the smell of fresh andagi, the festive atmosphere, the andagi, the lanterns swaying in the cool breeze, people dancing the night away, and did I mention hot fresh andagi? Obon is also a time for reflection and a perseverance. It is an occasion in which we look at ourselves and remember those who came before is and continue on a timeless tradition that generations have participated in and held in high regard. Today, it is our turn to carry on the torch of this great summer time event. Traditions, whether it be religious, social, cultural or within one’s family provides us with a crucial link to the past. I often wonder what kind of values my ancestors had. This link determines our future, just as how many traditions have evolved into the traditions we participate in today. The tradition of Obon and why we do it, has remained strong simply because every generation feels some sort of re-sponsibility to carry this tradition on. This tradition allows us to remember and contemplate with gratitude the count-less lives that came into our lives and make it possible for us to be who we are today. In this sense, we come to a cer-tain realization what we continue the lives and traditions of those what came before us. We come to understand that every facet of our existence, our words, our, thoughts, our deeds are a part of a greater reality of things and will continue far beyond even our own existence. When we understand that, and celebrate that, we truly understand Amida’s Primal Vow to aspire birth in to the Pure Land and then aspiring others. It is with that, that I cordially invite you to participate in Mililani Hongwanji’s Obon Festivities. It is a great time to re-connect with your spiritual home, so want to forge that connection. While at the same time, as you dance the night away and enjoy that hot, fresh, delicious andagi, don’t forget to take that time to reflect on the past, as it is a direct influence to your place in this world. Namo Amida Butsu.

Rev. David Fujimoto

Aloha Mililani

Hongwanji Ohana and Friends!

Your hard-working Kyodan Board of Directors met at their monthly meeting on June

and deliberated and took the following actions: 1) approved a donation of $500.00 to Puna

Hongwanji Mission to assist their efforts in providing much needed services to residents adversely

impacted by the lava eruption; 2) approved the 3-year negotiated contract with the Waianae

Coast Comprehensive Health Care Center in providing our Mililani Adult Day Care Program at Mililani Hale- good news,

effective immediately, the State Dept. of Health approved the expansion of our program from 25 to 42 clients, and the en-

tire Education Building will be utilized daily, Monday to Friday; 3) approved a policy for Honorary Membership for Mililani

Hongwanji. We were updated with the 2018 Bon Dance Program, Food Committee/Food Trucks, BWA Country Store,

Craft Fair, Silent Auction, and Lantern Parade. Many people come from all around the island to enjoy our famous Mililani

Bon Dance. It’s the high energy of the younger crowd, homemade food, and the treasured Obon traditions that we all look

forward to sharing.

We are very fortunate to have Oahu District participation in our Special Services, Buddhist Seminars, Workshops, and fun

and fellowship activities where our 8 temples (Aiea, Ewa, Mililani, Pearl City, Wahiawa, Waialua, Waianae, and Waipahu)

are represented. We especially enjoy hanging out with our Ministers, Reverends Hashimoto (District Chairman) Fujimoto,

Y

agi, Nishiyama, and Soga. We hope you will also join us for our next METTA MINI GOLF outing on Saturday, July 7th, 11:00

AM at the Tropics Mini Golf at Pearlridge, next to the former Toys R Us. Please call me at 291-6151 or email: renemans-

[email protected], to make reservations. Payment accepted that day, $10 per person. Just come out for some fun!

Finally, I will always remember the recent visit by Reverend Gene Sekiya, Hongwanji International Center in Kyoto, Japan.

His dharma message during the June 17th service was sincere and interesting, but more captivating was the time he spent

after the service for refreshments and talking story, and answering questions about our changing nature of Jodo Shinshu

worldwide and in Hawaii. He spent 20 minutes for his speech, but stayed 2 hours after the service to listen to our mem-

bers, encourage questions, and share his views on Jodo Shinshu in Japan, on the mainland, in Hawaii, and what is tradition-

al, practical, and how as Buddhists we sometimes may need to be flexible. We would have stayed longer talking story be-

cause Rev. Sekiya wasn’t getting up and kept talking with us, but we got the hint when people were closing the louvers,

closing the doors, dimming the lights, folding the chairs, so I guess, we got the hint, it was time to go. So funny! I hope he

will come back to visit Mililani someday again. Our Sangha truly appreciated him.

We are always very grateful for YOUR support for Mililani Hongwanji and interest in

spreading the dharma!

See you at Metta Mini Golf and Obon on Aug. 17-18!

In gassho.

Monthly Joint Memorial Service Change Mililani Hongwanji will be holding it’s monthly joint memorial service on the SECOND Sunday of each month. This is to ac-commodate various events that come up during the year. Please plan accordingly.

Memorial Services Mililani Hongwanji conducts memorial services in hon-or of those who have passed away. The Shotsuki Memorial Ser-vice is a general memorial service which are held monthly to remember members and friends who passed away during the month in which the memorial service is held. These services are held primarily for those individuals that do not fall in the yearly service interval cycle. Nenki Hoyo Memorial Services are memorial services which are held separate from the monthly memorial services in yearly intervals. These separate private services can be held before, on or after the memorial dates. It is a personal oppor-tunity to gather as a family to encounter and listen to the Bud-dha Dharma and remember your family members and friends who have passed on and through these services, we are able to

reflect on all that we have received from them in our daily lives. It also

gives families the opportunity to reconnect with members they otherwise would not see during the course of the year.

Minister’s Private Visitation Are you unable to come to the temple? Please call Rev. David Fujimoto at 808.625.0925 to request a private visit. The minister would love to reach out to you and be the bridge between you, the temple and the sangha!
