accounts from 2017 such as casual salaries and supplies.
Other things that must come out are: specific programs such as Beginning Teachers

Tied Funds are also included in this amount and they can’t be touched as they are
specific to particular needs; e.g. Integration funding of students with disabilities of
almost $100,000.
Internal orders where we hold the funds on behalf of other entities such as Better
Futures – Mental Health; SWSSA; Riverina Arts (Dept. of Education); Premiers Sporting
Challenge; Road Safety Programs (TSC) etc. which amount to tens of thousands of
dollars.

Important Messages For Parents/Caregivers
Uniform Reminder
Congratulations to all our students who have started the new school year wearing our
uniform. At THS our uniform looks smart, is comfortable, easily obtainable and not very
expensive; we believe that it should be worn with pride by all students.
The school emblems on our THS shirts are going really well and the student shirts look
fantastic and professional with the emblem particularly when doing activities away
from or representing the school. There has been a great response from parents
through P & C so thank you to everyone for your great support. Our Uniform Code can
be found on our website.
In practical classes teachers cannot allow students to participate in lessons if they are
not wearing the required footwear. The school can be prosecuted by WorkCover and
possibly be subjected to significant fines for not complying with this policy.
Unfortunately, students who are found wearing incorrect footwear will be given
alternate work.
Our new lighter weight Junior THS jacket in Black & Red introduced and approved by P
& C in late 2016 is being worn and will be compulsory uniform in 2018.
Picking Up And Dropping Students Off
Parking in a designated school bus zone is prohibited. Polaris Street is therefore a “no
go” area for picking up and dropping off. If you do so you most certainly run the risk of
a hefty fine. Double parking to ‘pick-up’ or ‘drop-off’ is also an offence.
Parents are to drop off and pick up students in Gloucester St.
Under the Department’s media and child protection policies, it is necessary for the
school to obtain permission from parents-caregivers for their children to be named,
interviewed, photographed or filmed for publication. If you have not already done so,
please request a Media Consent Form and complete and return it as soon as possible.

Deputy’s Desk…… I would also like to extend a welcome to everyone as we head into the 2018 school
year.
The role of the Deputy Principal (DP) is a fairly complex one and extremely varied in
nature. Whilst I support the Principal in all he does to ensure we provide our local
community with a valuable educational resource, we are also in a supportive role for
our staff and students. I welcome contact from all members of the community.
We encourage parents and carers to make contact with relevant staff members if there
are any concerns regarding your child’s education and wellbeing.
The first point of contact should generally be with your child’s Year Adviser.
For learning support in the classroom teachers have the support of specialised teachers
and they are: Ms Jenn Lewis, Miss Ashton Taylor and Mrs Kristy Wallace.
Our students and staff are fortunate to be supported by our school counsellor: Ms Jo
Brennan and is available every second Monday, every Tuesday and Friday.
A new policy has been introduced regarding student sanctions following suspensions.
Students will now have to show cause as to why they should be allowed to attend an
excursion or school event for the next 5 weeks following a suspension. Students will be
supported by Year Adviser at a panel with two Executive to determine the outcome.
Parents need to be mindful of where you drop and pick up their children. Please do
not pick up students in the bus zone area in Polaris St. Parents are welcome to drop off
and pick up Gloucester St. Please observe the speed limit of 40km/p/h. Not only are
high school students in the area but also children from the primary school walk past
the high school. The state government have introduced a number of new driving
offences around schools. Anzac Street is NOT a general drop off and pick up zone.
Give-way To Buses
The Temora Police and Community Committee have asked the school to advise all
parents and students who drive that when a bus is pulling away from the curb or
driving it has the right of way.

SCHOOL NEWS
A Reminder to Parents Regarding
your Child’s Health
We welcome information from parents
about your child's health, even if you are
not requesting specific support from our
school. Our school asks for medical
information when you enrol your child. It
is also important that you let us know if
your child’s health care needs change or if
a new health condition develops.
Information about allergies, medical
conditions such as asthma and diabetes
and other health care related issues
(including prior conditions such as
medical procedures in the last 12 months)
should be provided to the school by
parents. Please provide this information in
writing to the principal. This will greatly
assist our school in planning to support
your child’s health and wellbeing.
Please also remember to notify staff in the
school office of any changes to your
contact details or to the contact details of
other people nominated as emergency
contacts.
We appreciate your assistance in this
regard and assure you that any
information you provide the school will be
stored securely and will only be used or
disclosed in order to support your son or
daughter’s health needs or as otherwise
required by law.
A Reminder on a Number of
Points:-
Inclosed grounds
State schools are Inclosed Grounds under
the Inclosed Land Protection Act.. The Act
of parliament has therefore been passed
which determines guidelines around who
can enter and what contact can be made
with school students.
No parent or member of the public can
drop any item off to a student over a
school fence or at a gate.
Anything that is to be given to a student
must be delivered through the Front
Administration Office. This protects
students at all times from any undesirable
outside contact, delivery or influence
including drugs, weapons, alcohol,
cigarettes and food.
If anything is to be delivered to a student
(including food) it must be through the
Front Administration Office. McDonald’s is
not allowed on school premises.
On-Line Payments
You can pay on-line via Temora High
School Website. A section at the top of
the page is a tab for parent payment. The
acknowledgement slip must be returned
to the Administration Office once
payment has been made.
Electronic Devices
We advise parents and students to
consider what expensive equipment
students bring to school. THS does not
accept responsibility for supervision or
loss of items. If a student does bring
electronic devices to school, such as Mp3
players or phones, they must be OFF and
AWAY in class, meetings and excursions.
At times, teachers may allow their use for
learning purposes.
TERM 1 - WEEK 5 5 March 2018
TERM 3 - WEEK 2 5 March 2018
Page 11
If the student is using these items
inappropriately, the teacher will confiscate
the item. The student can retrieve the
item from the Deputy Principal at the end
of the school day. Repeated offences will
result in the item being held with the
Deputy Principal until the end of the week
or a meeting is held with the student,
parent and the school.
Contacting Parents
We ask that parents please remind
students that if they are sick they MUST
come to the Administration Office to see
the First Aid Officers.
Students are not to contact parents if
sick. If deemed too ill to be at school we
will contact parents, NOT the student.
School Grey Skirts
The P & C have grey skirts, and they are
for sale from the Administration Office at
a cost of $55.00. Skirts are part of the
official uniform for girls both Senior and
Junior years and all are encouraged to be
worn on school excursions and when
students are representing our school.
Clothing Pool
The P & C run a clothing pool in the
Office, all items are donated and are for
sale at a reasonable price. Donations are
needed for school clothing i.e. red and
white shirts, black shorts and tracksuit
pants. If you are going through
cupboards and do not have a need for
them the P & C would be grateful for
your donations. Please leave all clean
items at the Office.
Lunch Pass
It is THS policy to allow students to go
home for lunch every day except
Wednesdays, Sport afternoon. This is for
students who live close enough to school
to be able to walk home and then return.
Students are not permitted to go home
for lunch if:
They are late to school without a valid
reason (appointment etc)
They have a detention at lunchtime
They do not live close to the school
Students can have their lunch pass revoked
for a short time or permanently if:
They are not going to their nominated
place (home)
They are going down the street
They are smoking during their journey
There are other students going with
them
There is poor behaviour at school
Are caught at McDonalds
Year 12 students have the added
advantage of being able to leave at lunch,
but they must have returned a signed
permission note for this to occur. Only at
lunchtime are they are permitted to go
down the street, but are not allowed at
licensed premises.

teachers know to remind students in class
when necessary.
If your son/daughter/ward should be
wearing glasses (and fear they may not
be!), could you please drop an email
to: [email protected] and
let her know if it's for distance
(board/tv) or reading up close
(books/screens).
Darwin Safari 2019 – Expression of
Interest
The Darwin Safari has been running as a
Tri-Annual Excursion during the
September holidays over the last several
years. With the success, great feedback
and considerable interest expressed
after the 2017 safari, we are now looking
at expressions of interest to potentially
run a safari in 2019.
The proposed 2019 excursion will be
open to students in Years 8 – 11 (in
2019), with priority towards students in
year 9-11 if there is considerable
interest.
In 2014 the excursion cost was
$2,500.00 & in 2017 it was $2700.00.
We are hopeful that we can run the
excursion in 2019 for a similar cost to
2017. The number of students attending
is influential in the final cost. The major
fixed cost is for the coach and more
students means sharing this fixed cost
and therefore influencing the overall
cost of the excursion. We would be
looking at trying to operate with a
minimum of 27-30 students in order to
keep costs down to a minimum.
This is an extensive excursion, offering
considerable attractions, activities and
most meals. When you consider the cost
of other commercially offered coach
safaris, they are considerably more and
do not run over this length of time or
offer the extent of attractions and
activities. A copy of a proposed itinerary
is attached to give an indication of what
students can expect on this excursion.
We are seeking expressions of interest
early in order to determine if we will run
the excursion in 2019 and to allow
extended time for parents and students to
start budgeting in advance for the
excursion. If we receive sufficient
expressions of interest, an information
evening will be held later in term 1 or
early term 2.
If the excursion does proceed, the
payment of the excursion can be made
through a regular payment plan, but an
initial deposit of around $500 would be
required in term 2 2018 in order to gain a
commitment from those attending and
enable initial deposits for accommodation
and attractions to be made. Some of the
locations require booking in very early in
order to ensure we can visit during the
proposed time of running the excursion.
Students can place their names on the
expressions of interest list at the front
office, but this is required by no later
than 30 March in order to assess the
likelihood of the excursion being run
next year and commence organisation.
Students and parents are encouraged to
contact the excursion coordinator, Mr
Angel, at the school or email him on
[email protected] if there
are any questions.

preview will be held Wednesday 9th May,
with the dinner and show performance
Thursday 10th May, in our school MPU.
The meal will be provided by Michelle
Seymour Catering, assisted by our
hospitality students. Props and sets are
being busily made by the Year 10 Visual
Arts students guided by Mrs Cooper and
Ms Taylor (Art). Ms Harper (English) and
Mrs Schiller (DT) have been putting their
design and dress making skills to good
use by organising the costumes for the
cast. Dancers are getting the
choreography down on Tuesday
afternoons with Mrs Elwin (Dance) with Mr
Willoughby (Music) in charge of the live
music. Miss Hester (Drama) has the
massive task of putting the production
together as Director, rehearsing Tuesday
afternoons, assisted by the very capable
Ms Lewis (English). We are fortunate to
have these 2 talented vocalists on staff
and they are holding singing practice
Thursday lunchtimes. Students and staff
are putting a lot of time and effort into
the show and it promises to be a great
night of live theatre.

Year 12 Visual Arts Excursion –
National Gallery Canberra
Last Friday, the 16th of
February, the Year 12
Visual Arts class was
lucky enough to attend
the Hyper Real exhibition at the National
Gallery in Canberra. The exhibition
featured 50 hyperreal artworks by 32
artists from around the world, including 7
Australians. The students got to get up
close and personal with the work of
several artists they have studied in their
case studies, such as Ron Mueck and
Patricia Piccinini. To see the scale and
detail in these works was an amazing
experience for the students which allowed
them to fully appreciate the time and
effort required in creating these
sculptures. The students thoroughly
enjoyed the excursion and gained
valuable insight into the practice of some
of their favourite artists.
Mrs Anne Cooper – Visual Art Teacher
We have had a great start to the year in
the English and History faculty. Staff and
students are working hard and enjoying
their time in the classroom.
Already we are organising for all of our
enthusiastic debaters and public speakers
to get involved in the school teams.
Please remember to sign up at our
staffroom if this is something you are
interested in. Everyone is welcome, be
brave and join in on this fantastic
opportunity.

In our Year 11 English classes, we are
bravely working through a brand new
syllabus topic, Reading to Write, and the
students are responding very well to the
variety of texts they are studying. They are
focusing on both critical and creative skills
and are demonstrating some
improvements in their writing already. To
continue improving in this area Year 11
students should ensure that they are
reading a variety of texts in their own
time. Come and see us if you would like
some recommendations.
Our senior History classes are studying
some enthralling topics this term. 12
Modern History are examining the Arab-
Israeli conflict and the 11 Ancient History
class have just started their first case study
on Palmyra and the Silk Road. If you are in
Year 10 and are thinking of choosing a
senior History course next year, don’t be
afraid to ask your History teachers about
what you will get to study.
Our junior English classes are enjoying
their first topics. Year 7 are studying
Patrick Ness’ amazing novel ‘When a
Monster Calls” and Year 8 are studying
Australian heroes. Year 9 are studying
novels such as Tomorrow when the War
Began and Lockie Leonard, whilst another
class is studying the intricacies of public
speaking. Year 10 are getting ready to do
their own version of a ‘Ted Talk’ on a topic
of their choice and we are looking forward
to hearing their opinions about the world.
History classes in years 7 – 10 are studying
a variety of topic including Changing
Rights and Freedoms, Industrialisation
and The Ancient World. Their assessment
tasks will be coming up later in the term.
Year 7 students have enthusiastically
approached their study of Korean and Ms
Corby and Ms Lewis are enjoying
introducing this language and culture to
them. This week was Korean New Year
and classes enjoyed learning about this
cultural celebration.
We have had a few changes in the faculty
this year. We welcome Ms Emily Muldoon
to the faculty, she is working part time,
teaching both English and History. Ms
Kristy Wallace is back part time, working
both with the faculty and with the
Learning and Support team.
As the new Head Teacher of the English/
History faculty, I have enjoyed my first
month at Temora. The staff and students
have been enormously welcoming, helpful
and friendly and I already feel at home.
Thank you to everyone that has looked
after me so well.
Miss Josie Tomlinson - Head Teacher
All HSIE classes have made a positive and
productive start to the year. Students
from Years 7 – 10 are enjoying the lessons
centred on the new Australian Geography
Curriculum. Our newest teacher to the
HSIE Faculty, Ms Parker, has produced
some “sweet” lessons for some of her
classes – as can be seen from the
photograph below. This is definitely a new
way of mapping world biomes and then
enjoying the fruits of your labour.

Mr Rowing’s Year 9 Commerce class are
currently researching Companies to invest
their $50 000 into, as the 2018 ASX
Schools Share Market Game gets
underway. All the students are doing a
great job in weighing up their investment
options and they are keen to beat Year 11
Business Studies to first place. Good
rivalry and a great learning experience will
be had by all.
Mr Angel’s Year 11 Geography class are
getting ready for their first fieldwork
opportunity for the year. This will see
them visiting Combanning, the Wagga
Road Salt Site, Ingalba and Lake
Centenary. The students will also be
enjoying one of Mr Angel’s great BBQ
lunches along the way.
Finally, a reminder to all Year 11 and 12
students, to keep accessing HSC HUB
(Atomi) to preview lessons and to revise
lesson content. If you are having difficulty
gaining access to this excellent resource
then please see Mr Rowing for assistance.

Travel to and from Sport on
Wednesday afternoons
Parents are advised of the following
procedures that are in place at Temora
High School for travel to and from sport on
sports afternoon.
A sports assembly is held either in the
MPU or on the corner of the oval at
1.30pm, at the completion of lunch. Rolls
are marked after this assembly, and then
students walk to their sport under the
care of a Head Teacher.
Students who bring bikes to school on
sport day may only walk them to sport
with the group if they have a helmet with
them, as the law requires helmets to be
worn whilst riding push bikes in NSW.
Bikes must be walked to sport with the
group, not ridden. Those students who
bring a bike to school without a helmet,
must walk to sport and return to school at
the end of sport to collect their bike.
While students are walking to sport they
are under the supervision of teachers, and
must adhere to road rules, including not
walking on roads when footpaths are
available and crossing roads at corners
only when directed to do so by
supervising teachers.
TERM 1 - WEEK 5 5 March 2018
TERM 3 - WEEK 2 5 March 2018
Page 24
Once students are dismissed from sport
they are out of the care of the teachers
taking sport, and may travel home, be
picked up by parents, or can walk to the
High or Primary school to catch buses.
Students who catch buses are to follow
any instructions given to them by
supervising teachers at the bus stop they
are attending, including High School and
Primary School teachers. Failure to follow
these instructions will result in the student
being banned from catching buses at the
Primary school, and require them to
return to the High School bus stop in the
future.
Sport Dismissal times:
Dismissal times from sport vary
according to the location of the facility
being used to enable students sufficient
time to get organised and catch buses.
School: 3.20pm
Nixon Park 3.10pm
Stadium/Pool 3.20pm (students may catch buses from the Primary school)
Bob Aldridge Park 3.10pm (students may catch buses from the Primary school)
The Oval-Aurora St 3.10pm (students may catch buses from the Primary school)
The Rec Ground 3.05pm (students may catch buses from the Primary school)
Tennis Courts 3.10pm
If parents have any concerns regarding
travel to and from sport they should
request an interview for further discussion.

Science Report
This year we welcome Mrs Jessianne
Wiencke to our Science department. Jess
has been at our school for the last four
years and during that time her
contribution to a number of literacy
strategies has been most impressive. This
year the Science faculty have been very
fortunate in being able to allocate her to
some science classes.
As some of you may know Jess was an ex-
student of Temora High. Since completing
her training as a Science teacher she has
taught both in a Sydney school and a
large regional high school. Therefore she
brings to our faculty a wealth of diverse
skills which she is already implementing in
her delivery of
curriculum.
Jess believes that
learning should be
fun so it was no
surprise to find her
conducting that
classic science
experiment-

Elephant’s toothpaste.
It was however quite impressive that she
even managed to put some colour into
the teaching of measurement skills.
We are looking forward to her
contributions to Science teaching at
Temora High School.

donned their lab coats and safety glasses
to take on a day of practical laboratory
experiences.
Starting with using pH probes to measure
acidity of common substances and then
performed a titration.
Interviews with current practising
scientists and chemists were conducted
regarding the qualifications and current
research being undertaken. Giving
students an idea of the possible paths,
their future could hold after school.
Lunch was provided and consumed while
an informative presentation given on
courses, multiple campuses and
scholarships available through CSU
delivered.
The final session was performing a few
fun experiments using chemical principles
in the HSC course, such as redox reactions
and uses of catalysts.

to read the student guide associated with
each course as well checking with their
VET teachers on what competencies will
be delivered during year 11. Student can
often achieve a Certificate 1 in most years
11 VET Courses as long as relevant
competencies have been achieved.
Competencies will be entered to the
board of studies with statement of
attainments sent out at the end of the
year. Work placement is a mandatory
HSC requirement within each Vet Course.
Learning in the workplace will enable
students to progress towards the
achievement of industry competencies,
develop appropriate attitudes towards
work, and learn a range of behaviours
appropriate to the industry, practise skills
acquired in the classroom or workshop.
Students have been mostly working on
the Onguard safety tests in the classroom
as well as the following.
Year 7 Technology have been theory
notes and will soon be designing and
problem solving in there context area,
plus looking at the effectiveness of
various design solutions.

The Year 7 students have commenced
2018 with great enthusiasm. In their first
Library classes, they have adjusted their
computer log-in passwords so that they
have school computer and internet access.
In addition, every student has borrowed a
book to read at home and in DEAR time.
The loan period is for 2 weeks and they
are required to return the book or renew
the loan during their next Library lesson.
All students have been reminded to take
care that Library books are carried to and
from school in protective bags (a plastic
envelope was included in the Year 7 book
pack for this purpose). It is usually
accidental water damage from drink
bottles or wet swimwear that ruins Library
books and they have to be discarded.

The Study Skills Handbook
Just a reminder that our school is a
subscriber to the study skills website
www.studyskillshandbook.com.au
This is a website that will help students
develop essential skills for academic
success. There are units of work on topics
such as improving time management
skills, how to study, research skills,
summarizing, technology use, brain and
memory. Basically, everything required for
gaining good marks at school can be
found on this site. For example, learn what
the best study techniques are for your
type of brain, how to improve your
handwriting and useful software and apps
to block yourself from technology
distractions.
You will also see lots of useful handouts,
grids and planners at the bottom of the
THINGS TO PRINT page. To access the
handbook, go to
www.studyskillshandbook.com.au and
login (details available from THS Library).
The more of this website you can work
through the more you will set yourself up
for academic success.
