 Summer 2014, Issue 1 Welcome to the TCF Newsletter! The Temescal Community Foundation is a not-for-profi t 501(c)3 organization incorporated in January 2014. The TCF was founded by a group of local residents committed to improving the lives of the disabled and disenfranchised in the Temescal neighborhood and beyond. All profits are committed to this cause. The majorit y of our staff and volunteers formerly worked for the Clausen House Thrift Store Inc., an organization that had a similar purpose. In the six months since the TCF has been in existence, the Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers have worked tirelessly to increase the TCF’s revenue streams. Currently, the TCF is dependent upon your donations, retail sales revenue, and retail office rental income. However, the TCF intends to apply to other institutions for financial support, and we are planning fundraising events for later thi s year. With increas ing success the TCF will expand its programs and services. Our retail training program is up and running and is providing invaluable work experience to a special group of young adults. The TCF has formed an alliance with the Ashoka Foundation to provide instructional support and materials for an anti- bullying curriculum which will be offered at a local elementary school thi s fal l. With the continuing support of our customers and donors the TCF will joint venture with other philanthropic organizations in the future. The TCF is grateful for the support of its volunteers and unpaid board members. The TCF is a new resource in the Temescal Community. Our goal is to support the disabled and disenfranchised through new and innovative initiatives. For volunteer opportunities, donation information, or to communicate with the Board of Directors, contact our store manager, Bob Boone, at (510) 653-6817. Table of Contents Welcome . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 Greetings fr om the Manager . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 Employee Spotlight: Rachel Scott . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Donations with Delores . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 Resource List . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4 Contact Us Mon-Fri 11am - 6pm Sat-Sun 11am - 5pm (510) 653-6817 4632 Telegraph Avenue Oakland, CA, 94609 [email protected]  Temescal Community Foundation www.temescalcommunityfoundation.com

Welcome to the TCF Newsletter! The Temescal Community Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization incorporated in January 2014. The TCF was founded by a group of local residents committed to improving the lives of the disabled and disenfranchised in the Temescal neighborhood and beyond. • Temescal Community Foundation Newsletter

    WELCOME to the first Newsletter

    released by the Temescal

    Community Foundation (TCF). We

have been looking forward to this

launch for a while, and will update

    important information concerning

    our two stores and announcements

    from our Foundation Board.

My name is Bob Boone, and I'm

    the Showroom and Thrift Store

Manager. We are located in the

    fabulous Hoopers Chocolate

    Building at 4632 Telegraph

Avenue. My background is in retail

and Antiques, I find both of these

areas to be very exciting and

    challenging. Our Board of Directors

    is passionate about making a

    difference in the community.

Although we are a relatively new

    Foundation, formed January 2014,

    together we bring our personal

    experiences of living in this

    neighborhood, shopping and dining

    at the many great restaurants

    located here.

    We offer fine Antiques and

    decorative items, in our showroom

and useful everyday things in our

    thrift store.

    With furniture, lamps, jewelry,

    art, crystal, china, household

    items and hundreds of pieces

of clothing, I like to think if we

don't get your money in the

front showroom we'll get it in

    the thrift store.

    Our signs have become

a source to announce sales in

our stores, they are very clever

and will make you smile, they

get a bit edgy at times. Make

sure you check them out. We

are a Green business and I like

to think of us as the original

recyclers. We donate to a local

    Church for clothing hand out,

and also give to St. Vincent

    Adult center. Medical

    equipment is also donated for

    redistribution.

    Nothing goes to waste!!! Please

look to us for whatever your

    household needs are, chances

are we have it, at a great price.

    The staff and volunteers are

    dedicated to making sure

    everyone feels welcomed in

    our store. They are quite

    helpful and willing an assist

    you with any purchase. On

    behalf of the Board of

    Directors, myself and my entire

    staff, we welcome your

    patronage and solicit your

    donations to make this a

    community effort that gives

    back. We look forward to

seeing you in our stores, and

    Thank You for your continued

    support.

    Bob Boone, Manager

Greetings from the Manager, Bob Boone

Hi, my name is Delores Bishop, Thrift Store Floor Manager. Thank you for

your support and caring. Here are some tips for donations and volunteering.

Summertime is here! Mens shorts, Hawaiian shirts, cotton clothes

(save the polyester for winter), and light cardigans for going out to

San Francisco are all great donations for TCF.

If you want to volunteer, Monday, Thursday, and Friday are good

days to come in and get to know everybody. We always need help

    sorting, pricing, and merchandising.

We appreciate your kindness and look forward to seeing you in the shops!

    Donations with Delores

Rachel has worked in the thrift shop for over a year as a part-time

employee. Before that she volunteered for about four years. Her favorite

part of her job is greeting customers and smiling when they come in. She

gets bummed when the leaves build up and she has to sweep them. She

worked at the Ross in Alameda as a trainee, sorting inventory. She left

because she was unable to work with her job coach there. She was

referred to the thrift shop while she was taking classes at Clausen House

on subjects including computers, recycling, and food bank strategies.

Rachel has big family, with parents she sees on weekends when they

come down from Sacramento, three brothers (one who passed), and three

sisters. She just celebrated 4 years of being married to her husband

Ronald, who works at Community Car Wash. She enjoys watching her favorite show, Law and Order,

when they are not at a WWE wrestling show or Raiders game.

Rachel likes Gospel music, and she just went to a concert in East Oakland. Her favorite food is Mexican

and Taco Bell. She is looking forward to a big family picnic at Kennedy Park with lots of good food and

games, like Taboo and Dominoes. She rides the bus and sometimes BART to work from her home in

West Oakland. When asked if she had any future job plans she said, "Can I be honest, no. I like the

customers and the employees, everybody's really sweet.
