AfterWorldWarII,TemanggungRegencywasoneoftheareasincentralJavawheretheCommunistParty(PKI)hadisruralstrongholds.Inthe21stcenturyTemanggungRegencyprovidedahideoutformembersoftheIslamistJemaahIslamiyah.[1]

Religion

ThemajorityofthepopulationoftheTemanggungRegencyisMuslim.ItwasoncepredominatelyHinduforthousandsofyears.TheoldeststonestructureinIndonesiaisfoundhere4templeofShivaoneofthetrinityofHinduism.Thoughtherewere400only4remain.[2]

Economy

ThebigcashcropintheTemanggungRegencyistobacco.[3]Othercashcropsincludepatchoulioil,honeyandsoyoil.Thetraditionalherbalmedicine,jamu,isthebasisofalocalindustryaswellasistheproductionofcigars.SilkwormsareraisedintheareaaroundthetownofCandiroto.

ThereisaraillinefromParakanthroughthetownofTemanggungsouthtoMagelangandontojunctionwiththecoastalraillines,[4]however,itiscurrentlyclosedbythegovernmentduetotheoperationalcosts.
