The Daily News of TV Sales Monday, August 20, 2018 REPORT: MEDIUM ISN’T DYING, JUST ‘EVOLVING’ What’s TV?” may no longer be as easy a question to answer as it once was thanks to the technological revolution it’s going through. But while plenty of media types are hyper-focused on internet-connected TVs and cord-cutting, a new report shows they’re at risk of missing the big picture. “Amidst this new on-demand reality, old-school linear TV often gets a bad rap. However, contrary to what you may have heard, live viewership isn’t going anywhere,” says the white paper from SpotX, the video advertising platform. The report points out that analysts at Deloitte Global predict traditional TV viewing will likely taper 5 to 15 percent among 18- to 24-year- olds as more switch to internet- based options. But SpotX predicts broadcast and cable TV will as a whole remain “a cornerstone of daily consumption behavior.” Drawing data points from a number of sources, the white paper shows that traditional TV viewing habits are “particularly strong” in the U.S. compared to other countries. Eurodata TV Worldwide data shows the typical person in North America consumes an hour more of television a day compared to other countries around the globe. “Even though there are more ways than ever to watch video, these numbers show that audiences still love linear TV and are far from abandoning traditional live programming,” the SpotX report says. It credits the “enduring appeal” of traditional broadcast and cable TV on its ability to create a communal experience. “Although on-demand usage is increasing, linear television remains popular due to the immediacy of traditional live programming. Just think about the massive audiences drawn to the World Cup or the Game of Thrones season finale,” said Mike Shehan, co-founder and CEO at SpotX. So what is TV today? The answer has “gone beyond” the television set. “It’s expanded into this idea of Total Video, a phenomenon that spans all screens and all streams,” the report says. That’s due in part to improved internet speeds that allow viewers to have a traditional TV experience on any connected device without the need for a cable or satellite subscription. SpotX believes it’s a factor in why time spent on computers, tablets and smartphones keeps rising. Faster mobile broadband will only push that trend along. Consider these two data points: Ookla, the company behind Speedtest, reports fixed broadband speeds jumped over 30 percent last year. At the same time Cisco forecasts that video will reach approximately 82 percent of global internet traffic by 2021, with the vast majority consisting of long-form video-on-demand. NETWORK NEWS CBS has landed family comedy The Little Things, starring married comedians Tom Segura and Christina Pazsitzky, with a put pilot commitment. The project hails from Segura, Pazsitzky, The Mick executive producer Scott Marder, 3 Arts and CBS TV Studios. The Little Things focuses on the funny coping mechanisms that get you through the harder parenting dilemmas… Fox has given a put pilot commitment to The Family Practice, an hour-long adoption drama from Life Sentence and Significant Mother creators Erin Cardillo and Richard Keith, director-producer Jason Winer and 20th Century Fox TV. The Family Practice is an emotional procedural set in the world of adoption, from the point of view of an eclectic group of attorneys and social workers who grapple with their own familial dysfunction while striving to create perfect families for their clients… The detectives and attorneys of Law & Order: SVU will have a new face helping them out with cases in the show’s 20th season. Sandrine Holt (Homeland) will have a recurring part in the 2018-19 run as Lisa Abernathy, a clinical psychologist who consults on cases for the Manhattan district attorney’s office, The Hollywood Reporter says. Holt is the third actor to take a recurring part on SVU’s 20th season, which will tie its predecessor Law & Order and Gunsmoke as the longest-running primetime scripted dramas (in terms of seasons). Former Scandal regular George Newbern will play a doctor that has a history — not all of it good — with Rollins (Kelli Giddish), and Dylan Walsh will play a beverage distributor who is respected in the community and is a role model for his kids. Holt already has one SVU appearance to her name, having guest-starred in a 2016 episode as a different character… The Late Late Show’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment with Paul McCartney did so well that CBS is expanding it into a primetime special. Carpool Karaoke: When Corden Met McCartney Live from Liverpool will air tonight at 8 PM (ET). It features new footage from James Corden and Paul McCartney’s tour around the iconic Beatle’s hometown and his performance at a Liverpool pub… Variety reports that NBC News is shaking up the typical methodology of promoting evening news with a new campaign aimed at getting viewers to watch more of Lester Holt. Current promos for NBC Nightly News show the anchor talking to people whose lives have been torn apart by massive flooding. But a new effort amps up the action, and features a whirlwind of jump-cut images depicting Holt talking to a pilot in a plane; stepping along while covering wildfires; and interviewing President Donald Trump. NBC Nightly News is fighting with ABC’s World News Tonight for viewers. The ABC program, anchored by David Muir, has won more viewers overall for 25 consecutive weeks in a category the NBC newscast once dominated regularly... ABC aired a tribute to the late Aretha Franklin on Thursday night, but it couldn’t compete with what was on CBS and NBC. The 20/20 tribute to The Queen of Soul at 8 PM had a 0.8/4 and 4.8 million viewers, trailing CBS’s Young Sheldon encore (1.1, 6.02 million) and NBC’s Ellen’s Game of Games repeat (1.1, 4.84 million).

U.S. CONSUMERS DON’T LIKE INFLATION In July, core inflation in the U.S. notched its biggest annual increase since September 2008. In August, consumers noticed. According to the University of Michigan’s first look at consumer sentiment in August, consumers’ assessment of current economic conditions declined due to, “much less favorable assessments of buying conditions, mainly due to less favorable perceptions of market prices.” In other words, things got more expensive and consumers pulled back. U of M’s headline consumer sentiment index slipped to 95.3 in the beginning of August, down from 97.9 at the end of July and the lowest reading in 11 months.

WALMART EYES VIRTUAL REALITY SHOPPING Trekking through a crowded, cavernous Walmart supercenter isn’t much fun. But what if you could do it from the comfort of your own home through virtual reality? Bloomberg News, citing filings with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, says the world’s biggest retailer wants to find out. The company has applied for two patents that detail a “virtual show room” and fulfillment system that would connect shoppers clad in VR headsets and sensor-packed gloves to a three-dimensional representation of a Walmart store. Customers could wander digital aisles from home and “grab” items, which would be immediately picked and shipped from a fully automated distribution center. “Walmart knows that its stores are too big and unwieldy for people,” says Zoe Leavitt, a managing analyst at patent researcher CB Insights. The filing is part of Walmart’s recent push into virtual reality, an area that holds promise for brick-and-mortar retailers struggling with the massive costs associated with store upkeep and labor. In February the retailer acquired Spatialand, a startup that makes software tools to create virtual-reality experiences. Walmart is moving aggressively into the digital realm at the same time that Amazon and other technology companies are looking to establish a brick-and-mortar presence. Amazon acquired Whole Foods Market last year and is also opening cashier-less stores, while Google is planning a retail flagship store in Chicago, the Chicago Tribune says.

MORE U.S. WORKERS ARE DECIDING TO STAY PUT The Wall Street Journal says fewer U.S. workers are moving around the country to seek new job opportunities, as changing family ties and more openings near home make people less willing to uproot their lives for work. About 3.5 million people relocated for a new job last year, according to U.S. census data. That represents a 10 percent drop from 3.8 million in 2015. The numbers have fluctuated between 2.8 million and 4.5 million since the government started tracking annual job-related relocations in 1999, but have been trending lower overall, even as the U.S. population grew by nearly 20 percent over that stretch. Experts cite a number of factors that in some periods have kept people in one place, including a depressed value for their home or limited job openings. In the current strong economy, real-estate values have rebounded, but that has made housing costs prohibitively high in some regions where jobs are abundant, such as major East and West Coast cities. And while more positions are available, often at better pay, many people aren’t interested in relocating for family reasons or because they can get a better job nearby without the disruption and expense of moving. In addition, people with children are less likely to move after a divorce than they were in prior decades, as more parents opt for shared-custody arrangements that include their children living with them for periods of time, according to Thomas Cooke, a sociologist at the University of Connecticut who studies U.S. mobility patterns. Cooke said adults increasingly make decisions with their children’s input, partly out of a reluctance to disrupt their routines and friendships.

TV ‘EVOLVING’ (Continued from page 1) The white paper says it’s clear technological advances will continue to shift how we define and consume TV and video. But it also means that contrary to popular opinion, traditional TV isn’t “dying” but “evolving” to cater offerings toward the new digital reality. For anyone nervous about how things are going, SpotX says AM/FM radio may be a good comparison. People no longer gather around the radio in the living room, but lots of people still listen in their cars. “Similarly, TV isn’t going anywhere, though it will continue to evolve as programming

surfaces on new screens and streams, heralding the era of Total Video,” it says.Download the white paper HERE.

ECONOMIC NEWS The Conference Board Leading Economic Index for the U.S. increased 0.6 percent in July to 110.7, following a 0.5 percent increase in June and a 0.1 percent increase in May. “The U.S. LEI increased in July, suggesting the U.S. economy will continue expanding at a

solid pace for the remainder of this year,” said Ataman Ozyildirim, director of Business Cycles and Growth Research at The Conference Board. Meanwhile, U.S. home-sale prices increased 5.3 percent year over year to a median of $307,400 in July, according to real estate brokerage firm Redfin. Home sales increased 4.1 percent in July compared to July 2017 as inventory declines continued to moderate. The number of homes for sale in July was down 5.4 percent year over year. This marks the third month of supply declines around 5 percent following 19 months of inventory declines of over 7 percent.

AMAZON EYES DVR, COMPETITION WITH TIVO Bloomberg says Amazon, looking to compete with TiVo and Sling TV DVR technology, is developing a digital TV recording machine that allows for streaming of video content to digital devices. The unit, with a working name “Frank,” would include physical storage and connect to Amazon’s existing Fire TV boxes and its Echo home speakers. Current Fire TV boxes can stream live TV programming, but can’t store video content. Video content recorded on the new Amazon device could be streamed later to devices such as smartphones. TiVo, a manufacturer of DVR machines, has 22 million customers worldwide that use its time-shifting technology, and more than 7.5 million in the U.S.
