HYDERABAD: Reacting strongly to Urdu being labeled as a language exclusive to Muslims and

not of any consequence at the national level, renowned Communist leader, freedom-fighter and

champion of the Urdu language, Raj Bahadur Gour once famously declared: "If this be the

truth, then how come every immensely popular and galvanizing slogan of India from Inquilab

Zindabad to Gharibi Hatao is in Urdu?"

Raj, as he is fondly addressed by friends and admirers, has a long history of being an

outspoken and fearless leader. Hailing from an age which produced numerous heroes, Raj

distinguished himself as one of those who has held sway over the hearts of the people of Hyderabad for the longest period of time.

Of his many avatars, which include those as a Communist, a trade union leader, a

Parliamentarian, a scholar and a prolific writer, his role as a crusader against injustice to

linguistic minorities remains unparalleled. He is today acknowledged as the foremost

campaigner for the cause of Urdu, his mother tongue.

A recent revision in the pension he receives for services rendered to the nation as a

parliamentarian resulted in a windfall for Raj. The presence of such a large amount in the

bank, probably for the first time in his life, proved to be the cause of extreme anxiety as it went

against his proletarian beliefs and spartan principles of living. His immediate action was to

summon the members of the Urdu Taleemi Trust and hand over a cheque for Rs 3 lakh to serve

as a corpus which will provide scholarships for needy students enrolled in institutions

administered by the trust. It has been his habit to donate all that he receives in the form of cashawards to the organization which he had helped establish and nurture over the years. His

magnanimity arising out of firm convictions should serve as an example for all those who fail to

set limits on their requirements and can seldom keep their living standards in check.

Raj Bahadur Gour, national president of the Anjuman Taraqqi Urdu, was born in a Kayasth

family of Hyderabad in 1918. He graduated in medicine from Osmania University through the

Urdu medium of instruction. Along with his close friend, the revolutionary Urdu poet

Maqdoom Mohiuddin, Raj was a pioneer of the Communist movement in the erstwhile

Hyderabad state. The two were instrumental in the founding of the Comrades Association in

1939 and later the All Hyderabad Trade Union Congress in 1946 which coincided with the start

of the Telangana Armed Struggle. The activities of the Communists were declared anti-state

and evoked reprisals from the Nizam's government.

Things went from bad to worse after the Police Action when the Indian Union came down

heavily against the Communists, labeling them 'terrorists' and declaring them to be a greater

threat to the country than the feudal setup which they opposed. The operations of the Union

forces encouraged the old landlords to return and reclaim their holdings. A sustained

anti-communist propaganda campaign left the masses confused, resulting in a rapid erosion of

support for the Armed Struggle. Possibly the most despicable act of the administration was to

bring in a ruthless police officer from the Madras Presidency area, and unleash him on the

Communists. This blatantly undemocratic and violent action of a party sworn to ahimsa proved

instrumental in further subduing the masses who were shocked by the barbaric reprisals which

were even worse than any witnessed under the earlier regime.

The Communists were left with no choice but to withdraw their struggle in 1951, in time to

contest the first general elections. It is a testimony to the movement that the Communists, in the

guise of the People's Democratic Front, emerged as the second largest political party in the state

with Ravi Narayan Reddy, one of its most charismatic leaders, achieving a margin of victory

which was greater than that of Jawaharlal Nehru.

It is now 60 years since the end of the Telangana Armed Struggle and we are in the midst of another struggle in the region. The root cause of both the movements is almost identical and

stems from unrelenting exploitation. The instruments of suppression formulated by then chief

minister of Hyderabad, M K Vellodi along with Capt. Nanjappa of the Indian Civil Service have

been honed to perfection by the state police force, making them foremost experts in the country

as far as fabrication of cases and ruthless action against helpless citizens is concerned. What we

need today is leadership capable of facing the daunting task of ensuring justice for the people

without prejudices and personal gain influencing the course of the new political awakening.

It is time we looked up to Raj once again and seek inspiration from the sacrifices of his group of

dedicated revolutionaries in our endeavour to achieve the emancipation of Telangana, the region

which Mullah Wajhi, a 16th century Deccani poet describes as: Dakhan Mulk Bahutich Khaas

Hai/ /Telangana Iska Khulasa Hai (The Deccan is unique and Telangana is its essence).

When you divide a state it is done in present circumstances and not on old history. It is a fact that Hyderabad

Muslims are against going into Telangana it was expressed in 1969 agitation and 1972 Jai Andhra agitation and

even now we have the same view. Telangana history also has a long history especially Hyderabad of violent

communal riots between the Telangana people and Muslims. Others are never involved.

Telangana separation can stop atleast 80% of land grabbing, CBN is neautral like Gay. I am sure Congress will

anounce separate Telangana but don't know why they are delaying.

I feel all the people of telengana are too emotional or so called emotional fools, who these politicians know how to

use well. It is so strange as to even educated people are being so easily swayed away by illiterate politicains likeKCR. The people of so called telengana should ask these MP's & MLA's as to what they have done till date for their

betterment. Only thing that they know is blame other but they forget that 3 of their fingers are pointing towards

them. Anyways God bless all.

Telangana movement is shame on Democracy and Secularism. Dr Raj Bahadur has done some service. It is no

way that you can compare today’s Telangana with the pre-independence era. People know about Nizam’s , people

know about Ramdasu, people know about Quli-Khutub Shah and Naryana Reddy. We cannot help if people are

ignorant. I am not pro or anti Telangana. The current agitation is a blasphemy of KCR . KTR comes and use the

words of Sri Sri in Satya sai Nigamam in Hyderabad. Sri Sri is not a Telangana Poet. People are being used in the

name of social justice. Muslims are not from Hyderabad if we go back in history should we ask them to leave.

Tomorrow another agitation will start for separate Hyderabad and to include regions like bellary tumkur back in

rayalseema region. One stupidity has taken all over. How often we vote and we talk non-sense about revolution

coming. No one in this country are under the rule of Tyrants. Current state of Telangana is because of their own

leader they are trying to hide the faces in the name of T- agitation. How can TRS attack Telugu thalli Telangana

comes from telugu. TRS is one corporate affair only interested in making money and people are mass hypnotized in

notion of getting a dream land and we all will wake up as a bad trip. Its time to say no to Regionalism, communalism, Casteism , nepotism and corruption in politics. We should not be guided by people suffering with Alzheimer’s and

people who treat this land as fatherland than mother land. We need to settle the differences in amicable way and

move forward. We should not be dictated by China or Dollar. We are the future of the Country and we are not

smoking dope or coke or listening to people suffering with Alzhiemer’s.

development of a place, educated people are fighting for such a cause which now

might look so green in picture but later will be a disgrace since there are none in

terms of political figure who can chalk out a development procedure & lead

Telengana(so called). If you are not aware then you should know that KCR speaks

huge of job creation but at the back office he deploys his son & daughter for
