O ut of a starting cast of approximately 40,000, only 21 players - made up of 12 boys and nine girls - are fortunate enough to board the plane to Abu Dhabi on November 24 for the trip of a lifetime to The Abu Dhabi Junior Golf Championship presented by The Daily Telegraph. On November 27, 28 and 29, the 12 boys and nine girls will compete over three days in the 54-hole contest for their respective boys’ and girls’ titles. Each will be hoping to claim the title and follow in the footsteps of other past junior golf champions, including Mhairi McKay (1991 winner), Rebecca Hudson (1994, 1995 and 1997 winner), Justin Rose (1997 winner) and Oliver Fisher (2005 winner). The finalists are all set and ready to go, and who could blame them. A week enjoying the hospitality of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and playing one of the most fantastic courses in the world – who wouldn’t relish the opportunity? However, it is not only this elite few who emerge as winners from the tournament. There was a wide range of other prizes awarded, all to make the tournament more fun and exciting as well as giving recognition to those junior organisers who entered and returned their results. Without the support of these organisers, the event would not be possible. Junior organisers, who had arranged a qualifying event and returned their results, were entered into a free prize draw to win a variety of fantastic prizes, courtesy of Callaway. The 2009 lucky winners are: Peter Skidmore from Kings Norton Golf Club who wins a set of Callaway X Forged Chrome Wedges; Simon Fisher from Whittington Heath Golf Club who wins a Callaway Golf Strike Duffel Bag; and James O’Brien from Cottingham Park Golf and Country Club who wins a Callaway Golf pencil bag with flip stand. Those young golfers who participated in the championship were also rewarded for their performances through our under 14 prizes. Steven Waddell from Carlyon Bay Golf Club and Charley Hull from Kettering Golf Club, the boys’ and girls’ under 14 winners respectively, each won a strike Plus Stand Bag, courtesy of Callaway Golf. Finally, the numerous holes in one recorded at qualifying events throughout the year can not go unmentioned. All members of the ‘hole in one club’ received six dozen Callaway HX Hot Bite golf balls for their achievement. Take a look at our leaderboard, below, to see how many we have had this year. So, as you can see, it is not just the trip of a lifetime on offer, there are many other prizes available throughout the year for everyone taking part. Speaking on behalf of the Abu Dhabi Tourist Authority, Ahmed Hussein, the Deputy Director General, said that their new sponsorship would bring numerous benefits to the emirate, not just on the tourist front but in terms of building on the country’s sporting credentials. He went on to describe the Abu Dhabi Junior Golf Championship presented by The Daily Telegraph as “another step forward in our campaign to establish ourselves as a destination for major international events.” TELEGRAPH JUNIOR GOLF For further information on the 2009 Championship, visit www.telegraph.co.uk/abudhabijuniorgolf or call 02392 233 798 Alexandra Peters The best of the best in junior golf travel to Abu Dhabi HOLE IN ONE CLUB DATE OF QUALIFIER PLAYER’S NAME AGE H’CAP HOLE IN ONE SCORED AT: July 20 Thomas Burns 14 6 12th hole par 3 136 yds Ross-on-Wye Golf Club July 24 Tom Honey 15 12 16th hole par 3 155 yds Bedford & County Golf Club August 3 Thomas Hage 13 27 15th hole par 3 198 yds Cotswold Hills Golf Club August 7 Harry Konig 14 24 14th hole par 3 148 yds Fingle Glen Golf Club August 5 George Hill 16 8 1st hole par 3 202 yds Liphook Golf Club July 29 Ryan Page 18 4 9th hole par 3 194 yds Eaton Golf Club August 7 Paul Kinnear 16 Scr 4th hole par 3 200 yds The Royal Birkdale Golf Club August 14 David Ramsay 12 12 6th hole par 3 165 yds Holywell Golf Club July 31 Lee Smith 15 9 4th hole par 3 124 yds Crieff Golf Club August 10 Eric Becker 16 10 7th hole par 3 239 yds Bletchingley Golf Club August 11 John Ralph 11 16 10th hole par 3 188 yds The Caldy Golf Club July 27 Alex Christoforou 16 4 2nd hole par 3 168 yds Nazeing Golf Club August 7 Jack Harper 15 9 7th hole par 3 178 yds Thorpeness Golf Club August 27 Lauren Hung 14 19 17th hole par 3 195 yds Canterbury Golf Club August 22 Courtney Milburn 14 12 11th hole par 3 179 yds Heysham Golf Club August 3 Joshua Manser 16 9 11th hole par 3 157 yds Halesworth Golf Club TITLE SPONSOR For full results and the latest news, please visit www.telegraph.co.uk/abudhabijuniorgolf Win a four-ball at The Grove, Hertfordshire, host of the 2006 World Golf Championship You and three lucky friends can play where the professionals play and enjoy a complimentary round of golf on this Troon Golf managed championship course.
