Case Study

Littoral Battlespace Sensing-Gliders (LBS-G)The US Navy established Littoral Battlespace Sensing Gliders (LBSG) as a program of record in 2010 and has been using Slocum gliders operationally since 2012.

What do NAVOCEANO gliders measure?

• Temperature

• Conductivity (salinity)

• Optical beam attenuation (water clarity)

• Pressure (depth)

How are glider data used?NAVOCEANO provides warfighters with unique oceanographic products for operational and tactical decision making. Temperature and salinity profiles are assimilated into ocean models which provide regular forecasts, hindcasts and nowcasts of ocean conditions. Beam attenuation profiles are used to create tailored ocean visibility products in response to fleet request. Optics products support non-acoustical detection of (and by) systems, assets and people.

Why use gliders?Cost – each glider profile costs less than 1/100th of the cost of a ship based profile.

More data, faster – gliders can provide hundreds of profiles per month, compared to only dozens of ship-based profile per month. Multiple gliders provide persistent water column measurement capability with better temporal and spatial resolution as compared to other platforms.

Force multiplier – after being deployed from a ship, a glider can sample for months with no local ship presence. This frees the ship to perform other functions at the same time.

Case Study

Submarine AntennaChallenges:Pressure: 2,000 psig Stress: high G-force shockDurability: 15-year operating lifeReliability requirements: man-rated safety

Application constraints:

• Dielectric constant of glass to wire for RF performance

• Less than 0.5 dB insertion loss from DC to 18.5 GHz

• Less than 1.5 VSWR after hydrocycling

• Special low-loss cable not designed for underwater application required waterproofing modifications

• Minimal distortion under test - no phase angle change at pressure

Core technologies: Glass-to-metal sealing

Design contribution: Connector design Cable termination and molding

Teledyne DGO’s SolutionTeledyne DGO developed miniaturized, glass-sealed SMA and TNC plugs and receptacles capable of mating with special low-loss RF cables and withstanding high operating pressures. The entire connector/cable system was completely waterproof and achieved insertion loss of less than 0.5 dB and voltage standing wave ratio under 1.5.

Case Study

Search and Salvage: Mapping the Site of the USCG Cutter Alexander Hamilton

ChallengeAfter detecting oil on the water in 2009, the Icelandic Coast Guard ordered a low-frequency multibeam investigation in Faxaflói (Faxa Bay). This found a contact, but due to the water depth the surface-mounted sonars only provided low-resolution images. It was impossible to tell if the contact was a ship or natural feature. The Icelandic Coast Guard needed a way to obtain higher resolution images of the contact they located to determine if it could be the source of the oil that was detected.

Core technologies: Teledyne Gavia AUV equipped with side scan sonar and swath bathymetry modules

Mission DetailsOn 19 August the Icelandic Coast Guard Cutter Ægir was tasked with further investigation, and Hafmynd ehf (now Teledyne Gavia) was invited to participate using a Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle.

The modular Gavia AUV was transported by hand to the ship in a set of hard cases (max weight 30kg), and assembled on deck during the transit to the survey site. The survey mission took place on 31 August, 2009, in windy conditions and sea state 4 ‐5. The Gavia AUV was operated from a RIB launched from the ICG Cutter Ægir. Small boat operations in these conditions were quite challenging, as was the AUV launch and recovery due to the high swells and limited visibility.

The Gavia was sent on a lawn mower survey pattern at 15m altitude in 95m water depth, covering the wreck area and debris field in less than an hour, collecting simultaneous GeoSwath bathymetry and side scan data. The Gavia was equipped with a Marine Sonic 600 kHz Side Scan Sonar and a 500 kHz GeoSwath bathymetric mapping sonar.

For accurate, survey-grade positioning the AUV carried a DVL-aided Kearfott T24 Inertial Navigation System (INS).

The data was uploaded using WiFi to the processing computer onboard the Ægir, allowing rapid quality control of the data, generation of rough charts, and adjustment of mission parameters for a second, closer pass using the high frequency side scan. This data gave details of the attitude of the wreck, and details of the dimensions and running gear to allow positive identification.

ConclusionsThe Gavia AUV enabled the investigating team to obtain high resolution, high frequency mapping and imaging data from the survey site in a way not possible with a boat-mounted, towed, or ROV spread. The AUV could run a tight survey pattern over the target area at considerable depth, with a minimum of logistics required topside. The high accuracy INS/DVL navigation allowed precise positioning and mapping of the debris, which enabled subsequent ROV and diver visits to be planned in detail. This enabled the positive identification of the USCGC Alexander Hamilton.

Life Cycle Support

Teledyne provides full life cycle support for our programs, products and services. The support cycle starts as soon as a program begins, with multistage training that spans topics from basic operations and depot level repairs to advanced diagnostics. Operations and Maintenance plans are tuned to the customer’s operational tempo and long term Service Life Extension Plans (SLEP) are budgeted.

Teledyne’s experience with setting up and supporting different operational infrastructures enables our team to tailor a Life Cycle Support Plan that suits to the customer’s needs.
