The Trade

Personal attributesThe personal attributes most employers want are:

intellect - the ability to analyse, critique and synthesise information in order to solve problems

knowledge - an understanding of ‘basic principles’ rather than large stocks of specialist knowledge

commercial awareness- an appreciation of workplace culture willingness to learn- the ability to learn and continue learning

throughout life flexibility and adaptability- the ability to respond to change, to

pre-empt change and ultimately to lead change self-regulatory skills- self-discipline, time-keeping, the ability to

deal with stress, to plan and prioritise your workload and to ‘juggle’ several tasks at once

self-motivation- being a “self-starter”, resilient, tenacious and determined

self-assurance- self-confidence, self-awareness, self-belief, self-sufficiency, self-direction and self-promotion

The Trade

Interactive attributes The interactive attributes most employers want are: communication skills- the ability to communicate,

formally and informally, verbally and in the written form, with a wide range of people both internal and external to the organisation

interpersonal skills- the ability to relate to, and feel comfortable with, people at all levels and to be able to make and maintain relationships as circumstances change

teamwork- the ability to work effectively in teams, often more than one team at once, and to be able to re-adjust roles from one project situation to another in an ever-shifting work situation

Identify the characteristics and limitations of each trade within each type of company

Page 9: Telecommunications: The Trade and Training Process

The Trade

Steady year-round employment, including overtime and emergencies with little notice

Overtime hours are occasionally “banked” for personal days and slow periods

Work environment: indoors and outdoors in all kinds of weather

Involves lifting, climbing, stooping, reaching, crouching, and crawling

Must work in high places such as rooftops and trees and telephone poles or below ground with buried lines

May work in proximity with electrical wires and circuits; hence proper precautions must be taken

May be required to work in closed areas and manholes and test for the presence of hazardous materials or gas before entering

Physical and personal skills required to work in telecommunication equipment installation and repair

Line Installers

Page 10: Telecommunications: The Trade and Training Process

The Trade

Generally work indoors in a company’s central office, telecom room, or a customer’s home or place of business

Construction sites require proper safety equipment (boots, clothing, and hard hat)

Required to stand for long periods on ladders, stooping and reaching. It is essential to guard against cuts and scrapes, burns, and electrical shock

Occasionally may work in lifts and skyjacks – use of harness is mandatory

Requires physical stamina and at ease with heights Colour coded wiring and standards requires the ability

to distinguish colours Requires the availability to work evening and night

The Training Process

Discuss the capabilities, attitudes, aptitudes, and knowledge required to exercise the trade

Learn about the different possibilities regarding vocational and technical telecommunications training programs (occupations and trades considered, admission conditions, program goals, and training certification

The relevance of the training program versus the reality of telecommunications equipment installation and repair work

First impressions of the trade and training Apply basic communication techniques when

introducing oneself, ascertaining the customer needs, providing explanations, consulting resource personnel and negotiating with suppliers

Course Modules

The Trade and Training Process – 30 hrs To become familiar with the nature of the trade Understand the training process Assess career choice

DC Circuits – 90 hrs Work with:

- a mixed circuit composed only of resistors - a circuit diagram

Use of measuring instruments Interpret a circuit diagram – calculate values at

different points in the circuit – take measurements at different points in the circuit – interpret the results

AC Circuits – 90 hrs Work with:

- a circuit comprised of resistors, inductors, and capacitors

- a circuit diagram Use of measuring instruments such as DVM’s and

oscilloscopes Interpret a circuit diagram – calculate values at

different points in the circuit – take measurements at different points in the circuit – interpret the results

Semiconductor Circuits – 105 hrs Work with resistors, transistors, diodes using

technical diagrams, a calculator, and measuring instruments such as DVM’s and oscilloscopes

Must read and understand specifications Identify different circuit configurations

Occupational Health and Safety – 30 hrs Identify the source of danger Identify the cause Identify the effects on health and safety Select preventive measures

Logic Circuits – 75 hrs

Logic circuits are the basic building blocks used to realize consumer and industrial products that incorporate digital electronics. Such products include digital computers, video games, voice synthesizers, pocket calculators, and robot controls

Course Modules Oscillator and Filter Circuits – 45 hrsOscillators are important in many different types of electronic

equipment. For example, a quartz watch uses a quartz oscillator to keep track of what time it is. Electronic filters are electronic circuits which perform signal processing functions, specifically intended to remove unwanted signal components and/or enhance wanted ones Measure and interpret signals produced by oscillators Measure and interpret filter input and output signals Adjust oscillators and filters

Cable Installation – 75 hrs Work with:

Telephone, computer, and video cable Use technical documentation, blueprints, tools and

measuring equipment Pull, attach, and punch cables

Course Modules

Microprocessor circuits– 75 hrsA microprocessor is designed to perform arithmetic and

logic operations that make use of small number-holding areas called registers. Typical microprocessor operations include adding, subtracting, comparing two numbers, and fetching numbers from one area to another. These operations are the result of a set of instructions that are part of the microprocessor design To become familiar with microprocessor characteristics,

interfaces, diagrams , documentation, and verification techniques

Take measurements with proper choice of test points Using a Computer – 60 hrs
