Patriarch Laham Calls for the launching
of the Human Rights Arab Charter
During his pastoral and official visit to Vene-zuela, the Melkite Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All the East Gregory III Laham held with the Church
delegation accompanying him in his trip, a series of spiritual and social gatherings with the Melkite Catholics and the Arab communities. His Beatitude called them to be the message and witness inside and outside their society, mentioning the circumstances in the Arab World and the current revolutions especially in Syria and the massa-cres in Egypt. As well Patriarch Laham asked about the possibility of a future vision regarding these revolutions, otherwise division, bloodshed and destruction are evident. As well, His Beatitude consid-ered that the Human Rights Arab Charter is the solution to deal with these exceptional circumstances “It’s important to listen to the youth, consider deeply the situation and understanding it well… We are called to be the first and turn these revolutions and bloodshed into a positive energy with which we develop our society and fulfill our children’s ambitions.
Fr. Joseph Weresensky
and the World Day for the Refusal of Misery
Knowing misery from his early age, he learned how to confront it with courage and pride. After his ordination as priest, he lived with the poorest families in France. He is Fr. Joseph Were-sensky (1917- 1988), the founder of a non-governmental organization to fight poverty called “A.T.D. Fourth World”. With activists in the Human Rights, he launched “the World Day for the Refusal of Misery” in October 17th, 1987 that was acknowledged officially in 1992 by the UN calling it the World Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The United Nations have expressed, days ago on this occasion, their solidar-ity with the poor and declared that only a development that does not forget anyone is sustainable.
Fr. Joseph inspired a large group of people and passed away in February 14th, 1988, leaving his words and deeds as a heritage to humanity.
