    The Durban Botanic Gardens (DBG) traces its origins to colonial times, when itwas founded in 1849 for the introduction and trial of potentially useful

    commercial crops. The ga rdens later developed collections of s ub-tropicaltrees, palms and orchids. The Durban Botanic Gardens remain

    classic botanic gardens, reflecting the universality of the plantkingdom. It has, for over 1 00 years, had a fine mixed arboretumof African, Asian and American trees.

    animals, intricately carved c hairs, s oapstone sculpturesand so much more.

    In addition Durban has a interesting Maritime Museum located ne arthe Bat Centre (opposite Aliwal Street) which includes several tugs,a m inesweeper and other large and small exhibits. There is a nominalfee for entry and parking

    The idea of Durban as a p ort dates back to 1 824 when the first Europeansettlers made a landing with the intention of setting up a trading post.The Bay of Natal (Durban Bay) was one of the few natural harbours availablealong the ea st c oas t of southern Africa be tween Algoa Bay and Delagoa Bay(now Maputo Bay).
