ons on walls in the old neighbourhoods of La Lana, Lavapiesand Rastro. In these

Probably the best aracon of La Lanais to just stroll around, leng the neigh-

bourhood soak in. Just walk through the narrow streets and alleys, go with the ow

as if you were a boat on a river, always being pushed forward by the current. In

Lavapiesyou can have a kebab out on the street, listen to the drummers in the

square or simply have a cervezain bars where the furniture seems to have been

collected from peoples living rooms.

Aside from the ethnic and original Madrid ambience that Rastroshares with

Lavapiesand La Lana, Rastrois home to El Rastro, the biggest and most variedopen market in Madrid.

El Rastrois a famous ea market that opens on Saturdays and Sundays between

the Plaza de Cascorro, La Lanaand the street of Embajadores. Everything imagi-

nable can be found here from valuable anques to used clothing, including collecto

cards, books, records, painngs, etc. The side streets also teem with bars and cafes

where you can take refuge aer a hard days shopping.

And nally, a word about Madrids nightlife. If you are nished and ready to go

home at 4 am, youll probably be the rst one to bed. According to the Madrid tour

ist board, a good night out ends at around 7 am aer vising at least 5 dierent

night spots. Madrid has some of the best all-night entertainment in all Spain and

youll never be stuck for somewhere to go at just about any hour of the day. With a

The course is full-me over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday -10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday -10 am t

1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the aernoon. Teaching pracce

starts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a de-

tailed course metable and your teaching pracce schedule.

The course starts at 9:30 am sharp. Please try to arrive at 9:15 am because you will

have to sign the register and hand in your signed course payment receipts.

European Union, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand pass-

port holders IGNORE THIS SECTION. You DO NOT need a tourist

visa to enter Spain.

If you DO NOT have a passport from a European Union country, the USA, Canada,

Australia or New Zealand then please make sure that you do the following:

Check with your countrys Spanish embassy or consulate to nd out what your spe-

cic entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period.

Before you send a deposit you must check with your nearest Spanish embassy or

consulate as to exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to

enter Spain.

To aend the course you must have a tourist visa that will allow you to stay in Spainfor 5 weeks. Make sure you have your visa BEFORE you send your deposit.

2. Receive, ll out and return a personal details form so EBC can write your

3. Contact your nearest Spanish consulate to get a list of required documents

4. Send your student visa processing fee: 680 if you want student visa pro-

gramme path one or 980 if you want student visa programme path two

5. Receive your study abroad documents from EBC

6. Get the other personal documents the consulate has requested

7. Aend the appointment at the consulate

8. Receive your student visa

9. Register your arrival when you come to Madrid

Allow three months to complete the process and make sure that the appointment

EBC JOB SUPPORT IMPORTANT 1:Two standard documents that are requested by the consulate are statement that you are in good health and a police report stang that you are not a

convicted criminal. The health report is quite easy to get but the police report takes

me. In some cases, between 4 to 6 weeks. You cannot aend the appointment you

arranged in step 2 unl you have all your documents. Make sure the appointmentdate you arrange is realisc. To speed up the personal document gathering process

EBC recommends that you start ordering these documents as quickly as possible.

IMPORTANT 2: Aer you have aended the appointment at the consulate, Step 7,

you will have to wait unl the student visa is nally approved. The consulate has to

send all your details to Spain for nal immigraon approval. This process can take

anywhere from one to three weeks.

Is the visa process guaranteed? Yes, we will refund your student visa fee if the

consulate denies your student visa applicaon because the Spanish school and stud

programme are not acceptable.

We have a 100% success rate in geng a student visa for Americans, Canadians,

Australians and New Zealanders so it is highly unlikely that you will be rejected.

It is important that you understand that you will get a student visa and not a work

visa. However, Arcle 90 -Work for students or researchers, means that you ca

apply for permission to work up to 20 hours a week to cover living expenses.

When you aend the appointment at the consulate, make it clear that you are

coming to Spain to study abroad. Regardless of your intenons, do not menon

Laptop computer-Check that it is wireless B/G compable. We give you the

Mobile/Cell phone-If you have a tri-band phone -BRING IT. You will nd that

is cheaper to buy a pay-as-you-go card for your phone than it is to buy a new

phone. Being contactable by phone is VERY important. Good local phone com-

There are no specic dress rules when you aend class, but we ask that you respect

your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country.

There are specic dress requirements for teaching pracce sessions that conform

with the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart

casual as per the following guidelines.

Women

Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very

short skirts. Bare midris must not be visible, even when liing arms up. Open-toed

shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.

Men

Long pants/trousers. NO jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirts with a collar (a e is not

required). Loafers or dress shoes are acceptable (no sandals, hiking boots or sneak-

ers/trainers). Long hair should be ed back.

Other wardrobe planning should be based on the seasonal temperatures menoned

ARRIVING: AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION

Madrids internaonal airport is called Barajasand is situated about 20 kilometres

from central Madrid. It is quite big and there are four terminals.

The Barajas Airport Metro staon is in Terminal 2. Trains leave about every 5

minutes from 6.00 am to 2.00 am Line 8 goes straight to the Nuevos Ministerios

Metro staon(the nearest metro to EBC) in the centre of Madrid.

SHUTTLE BUS45 TO 60 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

An airport bus runs between all the Barajas terminals and Plaza Colnin downtown

Madrid. There are several stops on the way to Plaza Coln. At Plaza Coln the unde

ground bus terminal connects with the Coln Metro staon. Buses run daily in both

direcons about every 10-20 minutes from 4.45 am to 1.30 am.

TAXI 30 TO 45 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

There are plenty of taxis outside the arrival area in the ocial taxi ranks. There is ahuge sign on the wall near each taxi rank that indicates how the taxis operate and

how much they cost. Ocial taxis are white with a red stripe on both sides. DO NOT

go with people who walk up to you and oer you a taxi, they are not licensed and

are not insured to take passengers.

LIMO 30 TO 45 MINUTES TO DOWNTOWN

This is an opon but it is not worth considering because it is expensive. Bearing in

mind the low-cost and eciency of public transport, a limo is not really a necessity.

Local transportaon

Central Madrid is a great place to see on foot, but like all capital cies it is large, so if

you want to go further aeld, use public transport.

Public transport in Madrid is safe and ecient, the Metro(Subway/Underground) i

the easiest to use. It has a big network to central and outlying Madrid. There is also a

extensive city run bus service and commuter rail service. There are also plenty of taxis

which. You can easily get to our TEFL course training centre by public transport. Once

you are seled in we recommend that you buy a 1 month Metrobuspass for centra

Madrid (Zone A). This costs a lile over 50 and gives you unlimited use of the Met

public bus systemand the RENFE commuter rail serviceduring the month.

Shopping

Madrid has probably the best shopping in all of Spain. There are many areas containin

malls and shopping areas full of dierent types of stores. Unless you are in a street m

ket, where you may be able to haggle prices, the cost of items in stores is as marked.

COMMON-SENSE WARNING: Shopping areas in tourist areas aract pick-pockets, so

watch your purse or wallet.

Mountain life

About an hour to the north of Madrid by train is the Guadarramamountain range. Th

highest peak is Pealarathat rises up to 2,430 metres (about 7,500 feet). You can go

hiking or climbing, visit the naonal parks, go horse-back riding or simply take in the

breath-taking views over the state of Madrid.

Skiing

The Guadarramamountains are Madrids ski vacaon home. There are two main ski

staons, Puerto de Navacerradaand Valdesquiin operaon from December through

March. Snow is generally good and ski staons have snow machines as well. If you arereal die-hard you can ski all year long in Europes largest in-door slope located in the

Xanadu mallin Arroyomolinos, a suburb about 10 kms. south of Madrid.

Beaches and swimming

Madrid has lots of outdoor public pools that are open all summer and have very good

facilies. Entry for a full day is about 4. There is a man-made beach in central Madri

on the banks of the Manzanares river. The nearest beaches by the sea are in Valencia

but with the near health spa quality of the outdoor pools in Madrid well its up to yo

Football/Soccer/Sports

Real Madridand Atleco Madridare both premiere league clubs in Spain. Real Mad

is probably more famous and has its football stadium the Bernabeu located 5 minut

walk away from the EBC training centre. Atleco are situated at the other end of tow

next to the Manzanares river, about 30 minutes away from EBC. As a potenal host o

the Olympics Madrid has plenty of top-class sports installaons.

QUESTIONS ABOUT LIVING IN MADRID

What are the average housing and living expenses when working in Spain?

Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or with

Spaniards. Prices depend on where you choose to live. A room in a shared house or

apartment in a good neighbourhood is about 300 to 450 Euros a month.

TEFL teachers are quite well-paid by local standards, which means they can aord a

comfortable standard of living. A TEFL teacher can expect to earn between 1,200 and

1,700 Euros per month working 20 to 30 hours per week. While this may not sound a

by internaonal standards, it means you can live quite comfortably in Madrid.

How much money should I bring?

If you do not arrange your accommodaon through EBC, you should budget to spend

between 700 (Spartan life) to 1,000 (comfy life) for the period covering the 28 day

course. If you want to stay and work in Madrid or the rest of Spain you should budget

around 1,000 to cover yourself unl your rst pay-check.

What if I get sick in Madrid?

If you need urgent medical aenon, you can use the Spanish Naonal Health service
