W A R NOTES. EARLY reports of a successful advance j
it the British troops in Macedonia are I confirmed. An official report, yesterday, L v s t h a t the enemy suffered heavily by
:it and artillery fire. T h e French have ijjtattacked west of the Vardar, taking
m the enemy's trenches on a front of ; iilometres, to a depth of &00 metres. The Serbians have expelled^the Bulgars
i m two villages on their front. Powerful |hs;ian aid is greatly improving the
cation on Roumania's southern front.

We shall have in future to lock to tho Russian market to re:>i»so as far an possible our output hitherto to Garmauy. I t is not that our manufacturers w i l l objsot to do business wi th Germacy, th-. ugh there are many who w i l l not be ton well disposed to this coarse. Germany is cut to k i l l our trade everywhere, aod aha wi l l cot facilitate i t at home. Tho demand tor tbe British article w i l l be kept down to a minimum, and we should be mad to place cur export trade to Russia at the meroy of the German carrier. Russia w i l l , after the war, enter upon a great period uf development. Tho war had to come so far aa tha Teuton and the Slav were aencerned. and the settlement w i l l ensure a relatively long period of tranquility. The development of Siberia w i l l be taken in band, and the groat scheme of railway extei.slo:-, which, just before tho war, was about to be carried on*, w i l l benefit us almost exclusively. In every branch of national development the openings stand ready to our bands If we oare to avail ourselves of them. I t IR t iuo there are those who say that Germany Is iodltpenabla to Russia, and that after the war trade w i l l revert to tbe old channels. No one need believe i t . The bitter animosity hero against the Germans is notorious, but i t is nothing as compared with the resentment in Russia. The Russians have actually cleared out every German, not merely tha trader and tho iodivlduat, but his very business and his property. They have given them, by an extension, t i l l tho end c l tbe month to reallsa, and then they must got oat, bag and baggago.
Now the Russiau cauoot provide for his own needs. Ia two generations he may do so, but c o t before, and the Russian w i l l turn to us. Tha Rusaian authorities have ao assured the British Government, and every trading concern which counts of their maximum goodwill in advance. We have to keep this goodwill. Movements like this touch the Slav sentiment, and tha Slav is a sentimentalist. I t w i l l ba known all over Russia. We are seeing to I t , and the spontaneous rosponse of people >.li over this oonntry is remarkable. Pecpio seem cot morely to realise tbe great efforts of cur Ally, but ti-ey appreciate that lo tha s'nic.--. our fortune- must be licked together industr ial ly. Belgium w i l l ba re-sstabUahing her own fortunes, and ao to a great extent wi l l France. We stand oa the bosii plane for commercial development. Aires''? there ia a very powerful syndioato in tbe fi-.Ui with tho doublo cbjeci of eioaticg a sort of Anglo-Rnaaian Bautc oa the linee «;f fissnoiag trade, while i t the a-it. - time U bttllda up makes easy for t i e British Lc^ufaoturer their credit system, which has ench a firm hold on tho Russian business life. Last year—tbe latett rather on record (1913)—the exports to Russia of British ro.tuufiotu-.-od goods wera £18,102,603, of which coala and coke represented 4j millions, and machinery 1, millions. We ou^ht lo be able ia ibo year after the war to triple these figures, and we shall need to 00 so because there wi l l be lean yqars to come wbsn tr,-de w i l l bo peer. Al l wo need to do ia to prcfif. by Russian goodwill, which exists already, and to increase I t .
