New £38 million NationalBiologics ManufacturingCentre to be built in Darlington Funded by the Department for Business, Innovation andSkills, the flagship National Centre will help companies of allsizes in the biologics market to develop, prove, demonstrate, scale up and ultimately commercialise new biologicsprocess technologies.

Biologics or Biopharmaceuticals are medicinesmanufactured using biotechnology. The products havebiological foundations, usually involving live organismssuch as cells, bacteria, yeast and others as tools toperform specific manufacturing processes.

Pharmaceuticals produced through biotechnology aredelivering significant advances in healthcare.

Completely new medicines are being created, notably for rare or previously untreatable diseases.

The use of biotechnology is also revolutionising theresearch and development of new medicines allowingbetter product targeting and personalised treatmentsfor specific diseases and patient groups.

Biological medicines already account for around 10 – 15%of the current pharmaceutical market and the sector isoutperforming the market as a whole. Significantly, morethan one-fifth of new medicines launched on the worldmarket each year are now biotechnology-derived. This willlikely grow with the scientific advances currently underway;and the application of biotechnology in healthcare isleading to an increasing number of innovative products.
