The Facts
• A 1996 study found that the amount of time an adolescent watches television, movies and music videos is associated with their degree of body dissatisfaction and desire to be thin.
• 69% of girls in 5th-12th grade reported that magazine pictures influenced their idea of a perfect body shape
• The body type portrayed in advertising as the “ideal” female body is possessed naturally by only 5% of American females
• The average female model weighs 23% less than the average woman
• 80% of women are dissatisfied with their appearance
• In a Dove survey, only 3% of women classified themselves as beautiful

The Facts
• 25% of men and 45% of women are on a diet on any given day
• 35% of "normal dieters" progress to pathological dieting. Of those, 25% will progress to partial or full syndrome eating disorders
• 40% of newly identified cases of anorexia are in individuals ages 15-19 years old
• According to the National Eating Disorders Association, the number of men with eating disorders has been growing for the last 10 years, with approximately 1 million men currently suffering from serious eating disorders and tens of millions more who have some form of eating disorders.
• Researchers are seeing more and more obsessive weight training and use of steroids and dietary supplements
