Social, but not that social

Google’s new Google+ social network sure looks interestingand comes with a number of features that give it the

thumbs-up in a number of critics’ books (see p9). But whetherthe search giant’s latest innovation will be a success is far fromclear. At this stage Google+ is sparsely populated, seeing thatyou’re only allowed into Google’s social party if you scored aninvite. Although invites are not that difficult to come by thesedays, the number of people onboard are still a long way offthose on Facebook (about 10 million vs. Facebook’s 750 millionusers). This leads to a “news feed”, or “stream” as Google callsit, which is a rather low on content and not that enticing to visiton a regular basis. Another problem for Google+ is that lots ofFacebook users have invested quite heavily in Facebook, notonly building up substantial friends lists, but also uploading anumber of photos and joining all the right fan pages. A massexodus from Zuckerberg’s site is highly unlikely.

Personally, I’ve had enough of all this online socialising, I’mheading to the bar.

For a moment last month it seemed likeeveryone online were trying to score a

ticket to the hottest show in town –Google+. Instead of sharing informationwith everyone that connects to you,Google’s take on Facebook is built aroundyour updates only shared with a selectedgroup of friends. With ten million earlybirds signing up in less than a week (byinvite only), it’s still dwarfed by Facebook’s 750 million users. Only timewill tell if Google+ will fly, since mostpeople are heavily invested in Facebook, making it doubtful if they have the timeor energy to manage two social networks, while also trying to keep up with Twitterand LinkedIn. Read more on p11.

DStv has announced thelaunch of BoxOffice, its

Video-on-Demand (VoD)service for South Africa, whichgives subscribers the opportunity to rentthe latest Hollywood blockbusters (15 tostart off with) from the comfort of theircouch. The service is only available forDStv Premium subscribers with PVRs, sowhat excites us more is their online offering which should be up and runningbefore the end of the year. Here anyonewith a fast enough connection can download movies to watch for a selectedperiod of time. We hope DStv keeps therelatively good price of R25 per movie, watchable for 48 hours (more on p7).

It was an extremely good month forlow data prices as the cellular

network operators did their best toundo each other on data prices. It allstarted when 8ta announced 10 GBdata bundle for R199 per month at theend of June. MTN responded by dropping their so-called “Uncapped”Lite offering from R749 to just R299per month. Vodacom threw their hat inthe ring, scaling down prices across theboard, for example their MyMeg 110data bundle at R88 (80c per MB), nowgoes for R49 (but for 100 MB). Notwanting to be left out, Cell C whooshedtheir offerings, with 120 GB (SIM only)now retailing for R3999.

Don’t forget to sleep tight

If you want to retain your memory, makesure you get a good night’s sleep. This is

according to research that suggests that itis not just how long you sleep for thatmatters, but how uninterrupted that sleepis as well. According to Science News magazine, mice were unable to remembertoys they had seen after a night of interrupted sleep. Additionally, the research suggests that waking up during asleep period interrupts the biologicalprocess necessary for retaining memorythat sleep initiates, and ‘resets’ it back tothe beginning. Additionally, interruptedsleep is believed to potentially interferewith protein production and the rewiring ofbrain cells. While the mice, which onlysleep for short bursts, required two minutes of prolonged sleep, and fruit fliesrequired thirty minutes, scientists believethat the time period required for humanscould be considerably longer. Shrinky and the brain

The good news for humans is that welive longer than chimpanzees. The

bad news is that we are the only knownspecies to suffer from age related dementia, according to a paper by theProceedings of the National Academy ofSciences. The paper further suggeststhat our longevity is possibly related tothe larger size of our brains, and the shrinkage of the brain as we get older.

According to the report, this shrinkage affects all regions of thebrain. While the average human brainwould have lost 15% of its weight bythe age of 80, sufferers of Alzheimersand age related dementia would fareworse and show greater shrinkage aswell. While all creatures age and experience the decline in certain functions, scientists as yet do not fullyunderstand why brain shrinkage isunique to humans.

A fond farewell

In an emotional finale, the UnitedStates’ thirty year space shuttle

programme has been concluded with thelast landing of the Atlantis. The shuttlelanded after completing a thirteen dayresupply mission to the InternationalSpace Station.

The retirement of Nasa’s shuttle fleet, which was used to repair the Hubble telescope and construct the space station, has become the victim of the recession and a review of the high costsneeded to maintain the crafts. It furtherleaves the country unable to place astronauts in orbit. However, there is aglimmer of hope for an industry that willsuffer from associated job losses and ofwhat some are calling the end of an era.Nasa intends to invite the private sectorto provide it with space transport services.

INTERVIEWS

TechSmart (TS): The Opera Minibrowser is the leading mobile phone

browser in SA and a number of countrieson the African continent. To what do youattribute its popularity?Phillip Gronvold (PG): The dominanceof mobile browsing over desktop browsingin Africa, and limits in internet connections, have certainly led to thepopularity of the Opera Mini mobile webbrowser. Opera Mini is unique in that it

shrinks down webpages to as little as10% of their original size before they landon your phone – this saves a mobilephone user time, money and frustration, and helps extend the capacity of data

Interview: Phillip Gronvold, Mobile Product Manager, Opera Software

screen and allow for a different type ofcontent to be displayed. These devicesalso give greater touch responsiveness, faster page drawing, and smootherscrolling on websites. For us, smartphones and tablet PCs mean wecan pursue new, innovative features andperformance updates to give users a top-notch browsing experience.

TS: What will be driving the adoption ofthe Opera web browser in future?PG: Our strategy is to build a better webbrowser with features that make yourbrowsing faster and easier. Opera strivesto lead the pack in innovation, while supporting web standards to ensure compatibility. Our vision is to provide thebest internet experience on any device, and Opera is indeed bringing the web tomore devices, such as TVs, set-top boxesand any other device with an internet connection.

Opera Software’s Mini and Mobile browsers dominate the mobile browser landscape, especially on the African continent.Since introducing an “open in background tab”-like feature,Opera Mobile has also become the browser of choice on mobile devices here at the TechSmart office. We caught up withPhillip Gronvold, Opera Software’s product manager for mobile.

networks. We also find that Opera spreadslike wildfire by word-of-mouth, and with72% market share throughout Africa, that’s a lot of people getting the word out!

TS: Smartphones and tablets PCs featureprominently on the mobile computingscene and are pretty powerful platforms. What new features have these devices allowed you to bring to your mobilebrowsers?

PG: Smartphones and tablet PCs are significantly more powerful than previousdevices, and feature better connectionswith faster mobile data lines. The tabletsalso of course have a larger display

“Opera Mini is unique in that it shrinks downwebpages to as little as 10% of their originalsize before they land on your phone.“

TechSmart(TS): Why did

you choose to startoff with only 15movies available topick from inBoxOffice?Jean LouisAcafrao (JLA):What we are tryingto do is learn fromthe market and

also to find outexactly what the right proposition is. It’san evolving product with the servicenow on PVR, with online coming later inthe year. What we have now is apremium offering that can be the mosteasily understood and consumed by theSouth African market.

TS: So will the PVR offering berestricted to 15 titles?

TechSmart attended the launch of DStv’sBoxOffice, a movie on demand serviceavailable for DStv Premium subscribers(see p3). We had to opportunity to talk toJean Louis Acafrao, general manager forDStv on Demand, about this and theirupcoming online offering.

JLA: Until we get new versions of PVRs,that amount is pretty much lockeddown. As we cycle through better PVRswith bigger hard-drives, we’ll be tryingto make more content available.

TS: When will your online video ondemand offering be up and running?JLA: Definitely before the end of theyear.

TS: What about download size of themovies?JLA: Download size will vary in regardsto the quality of the movie. We areconsidering giving users the option ofeither a fast download, but lowerquality, or waiting longer for a higherquality movie.

TS: For the same price? (DStvsubscribers currently pay R25 perBoxOffice movie).

Interview: Jean Louis Acafrao, General Manager: DStv on Demand

JLA: Potentially yes, we have notfinalised pricing for our online offeringyet. Right now we are making sure thatthe proposition is correct.

TS: Will series be made available onlinetoo?JLA: Not in the immediate future, butwe don’t discount that it might becomeavailable.

TS: The movie on demand market in SAis there for the taking. Are you expectingany competition moving in soon?JLA: We welcome competition and wethink it’s healthy. The only thing is thesize of the market in SA – we don’treally have a big broadband base in SA.The studios also make it cost prohibitivefor anyone to apply for rights. We dosee potential competition, but I think itwill be a niche offering, for examplesport or lifestyle.

Specific communicationInstead of broadcasting your updates toall your friends, as is the case with Twitter and Facebook, Google+ dividespeople you know into several circles –much like the concept of spheres of influence. Default circles include friends, family, acquaintances, and people youare following. Additionally, you can create your own circles, if you want toorganise several people, such as from aparticular club, into their own dedicatedgrouping. That way, you can specifywhat information you share and withwhom. This may help alleviate thebiggest problem Facebook has beenplagued with, namely the issue of privacy. Additionally, your streams (theequivalent of Facebook’s status

updates), can be selected by each circle. This means, rather than scrollingthrough legions of annoying Farmvilleupdates, you can select to see streamssolely from family members or friends, for example.

An also ran?It would be a mistake to underestimateor write Google+ off as an imitator oralso-ran. This is after all the same company that made the word “google”part of the English language andbrought us the world’s most-used smartphone operating system in Android. Perhaps the biggest question isnot what is Google+, but how will itchange the social media landscape inthe months and years to come? [RN]

account. Additionally, users can set theiraccount limits for daily cash withdrawals, for which one would still need to accessan ATM. Furthermore, new beneficiariescannot be added using the app alone, and transfers can only be made to existingbeneficiaries. Additionally, an algorithmcalled Smart Block, which is part of theapplication, detects strange or suspicioustransactions and reacts accordingly.

Coming upThe app will be updated with new features in the upcoming months, withthe first of these being an SMS alertsfunction in September. Developments onthe various smartphone and tablet platforms would be done simultaneously.Additional features that are intended tobe incorporated into the app in the nearfuture include augmented reality, nearfield communication, share trading andeBucks. FNB customers who have Appledevices can download the app fromApple’s App store, whilst Android customers can get it from the AndroidMarket and Blackberry users can download it from Blackberry App World. [RN]

These days it seems like First National Bank (FNB) is alwaysfirst with innovation. And they’vedone it again with the launch ofits free Transactional Bankingapp, specifically designed forsmartphones and tablets.

9

Good securityAs security is of prime concern with anybanking initiative, Michael Jordaan, FNB’sCEO, emphasised that numerousmeasures had been instituted to insurethat customers’ banking details wouldremain secure in the event of theirsmartphone or tablet being lost or stolen. The first of these is the requirement of apassword and a linked internet banking

The app allows FNB customers to haveimmediate and secure access to their

bank accounts, also enabling them toview their account lists and detailedtransactional history, perform transactional services including transfersbetween accounts, as well as to pay beneficiaries. FNB’s Transactional Banking app further helps FNB customers to find FNB branches andATMs using location-based services andmake free calls to any FNB contact centres as well as cheap outbound callsto other numbers. Additionally, users canalso view Foreign Exchange rates fromwithin the app itself. What surprised usis that the app is available across three platforms – Apple’s iPad and iPhone,BlackBerry devices, as well as Android-running smartphones and tablets. Availability for Nokia’s Symbian operating mobile devices is expected bythe end of August.

MOBILE APPS

What surprised us isthat the app is available across threeplatforms – Android,Apple and BlackBerry.

“The biggest question is how will it changethe social media landscape?”

THE GOOGLE+SOCIAL NETWORKThe only way to join, at present, is to

be invited by someone who is already on it. This shouldn’t be a causefor concern since with ten million users,it is likely that you know someone whohas a Google+ account already. Thisstrategy, which lends Google+ anexclusive air, while simultaneously leveraging off word of mouth by the millions of users who use Google’s various offerings (Gmail, Google Docs,Reader, Maps, to name a few) appearsto be working. While it took Facebook852 days (two years and three months)to reach ten million users, and Twitter780 days (two years and one month) toreach that same following, Google+ haslured ten million users in a mere 16days.

The launch of Google+ had pundits, tech analystsand users scratching their head over what exactly itis (and how to score an invite). Is Google+ meant tobe a Facebook competor, or, with its Followingfeature, a competor for Twier? The answermight be a bit of both, but perhaps more accurately, Google + is Google’s take on social networking.

» Samsung launches Galaxy Tab 10.1

the likes of the Acer Iconia A500 and Asus Eee Pad Transformer.

Of one thing we are certain – with so many tablets on offer, expect the race for a share of consumers’ wallets to becomefiercer than ever. [RN]

Aweek later, Lenovo joined the tablet fray byannouncing not one but rather two tablets

aimed at consumers and one forenterprise: the IdeaPad K1, theIdeaPad P1 and a business-centricThinkPad tablet.

The 10.1" IdeaPad K1, whichwill run the Android 3.1Honeycomb operating system, isfirmly aimed at consumers, andwill ship preloaded with more thanforty apps, including Angry Birds,Kindle and Documents To Go. Lenovo’sIdeaPad P1 takes the road-less-travelledby shipping with Windows 7, a bold moveseeing that this OS is not really optimised for

tablets. It ships with a stylus, presumablyto help with “touch”, while also running

on an Intel 1.5 GHz processor, withLenovo’s other offerings runningthe speedy Tegra 2 dual-coreprocessor. Finally, the businessfocused ThinkPad tablet comeswith both a full-sized USB andSD card slot, while fileencryption, anti-theft software

and remote wipe features are alsoincluded. The Lenovo tablets will launch

in the US in August and the company statedthat the tablets are expected to be available

worldwide during the Q3 of this year. Whether thisincludes SA remains to be seen.

Rather than follow the standard7" or 10" form factor, Sony appears tofocus on differentiating itself in the tabletmarket with some unique designs.

The S1, Sony’s 9.4" tablet, has a tapered design alongthe back of the tablet which raises it slightly when it’s laiddown in a horizontal mode, presumably to make typing on thedevice a bit more ergonomic. It also provides the feel ofholding a magazine folded on itself when held in portraitmode. Sony’s other tablet, the S2, has disregarded the typical7" form factor in favour of a clamshell design with dual 5.5"screens, a little reminiscent of Nintendo’s DSi XL. According tothe company, this has been done to optimise mobility and toenable one to slip the tablet into a jacket pocket or purse. Nolocal release dates have been announced.

Earlier this month, Sonyfinally unveiled its two

new Android tablets to themedia at press launches across

the US for some preliminaryhands-on time ahead of its as yet, unconfirmed launch date.

» Sony S1 and S2

Some of the tablet news landing on our radar this pastmonth include more details on two uniquely designed

tablets from Sony, Lenovo’s announcements of three newproducts and the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1finally reaching South African shores.

With the prevalence of tablet news, tablet announcements andtablet reviews, you could easily be forgiven for thinking thatin 2011 the Tablet Age is in full swing.

MORE HOT NEW TABLETS ARE A-COMING

Samsung was one the first companies to respond to thesuccess of the iPad, launching the smaller 7" Galaxy Tab

not long after. Now the South Korean company is ready for asecond coming, with the unveiling of the larger Galaxy Tab10.1 to the South African market. This new device weighs595 grams and measures a mere 8.6 millimeters in thickness– the thinnest Android 3.1 (Honeycomb) tablet to date. Witha 10.1" touch-screen display (hence the name) with a WXGA(1280 x 800) resolution, it houses the Tegra 2 1 GHz dual-core processor and a 6800 mAh battery, which the companyasserted will provide up to ten hours of continuous video playon a single charge.

Notable features include Samsung’s Hubs to managepopular content. The social hub aggregates email, contacts, calendar and Facebook and Twitter feeds into a centrallocation, while the reader hub and gaming hub does the samefor e-reading and gaming respectively. Huawei IDEOS X5 ›› Mid-range specs on budget device

HTC ChaCha is not a typical Androiddevice. It’s being dubbed, somewhat

incorrectly, the ‘Facebook phone’, due inno small part to the singular Facebook

button on the bottom right of theChaCha’s white and chrome front. It is nota phone created by Facebook, but ratherpays particular homage to the popularityof that social network and user’spredilection to constantly check their feedsand update their status.

Portable performerAs is expected from HTC, the phone issolid and has a pleasant weight (124 g),measuring 65 mm wide and 114 mm long.Nonetheless, it seems more compact thanits measurements suggest. This may bedue to the fact that the phone gently butnoticeably curves upward, raising the

screen slightly abovethe keyboard’s level. While other Androidphones tend towardsmaking their screensas large as possible, the ChaCha shares itsfront face equallybetween a small 2.6"touch-screen and aQWERTY keyboard. The

all-important keypad keysare small but pleasinglyelongated and slightlyraised, which provides asmooth and accurate typingexperience – much better than anyBlackBerry device we’ve tested.

Facebook buttonSomewhat counter-intuitively, pressing theFacebook button does not take you to yournews feed, but rather defaults to a statusupdate field where you can either post aphoto or a new status. We could not find away to access one’s feeds from this defaultscreen, instead it’s required to go to the

Perhaps the HTC ChaCha is sonamed for the dance between itsstylish workhorse form andfunkier Facebook functionality.

superb Retina Display, but the budgetconscious X5’s screen still makes photosand videos appear vivid and is veryresponsive to use.

Skinless AndroidYou employ this touch-screen to navigate the smartphone’s mobile operating system (OS),Google’s stock standardAndroid 2.2.1 (aka Froyo)in this case. The OS is alittle dated, especiallysince the cheaper (R2080)Samsung Galaxy Gio runson Android 2.3(Gingerbread). It has nofancy skin, such as HTC’sSense, layered on top of it

either. For general usagethis isn’t really a disadvantage, as thevanilla flavoured Froyo iseasy to use, boasting fivehome-screens to populatewith your chosen widgetsand shortcuts.

FeaturesPowering the IDEOS X5 is Qualcomm’sMSM 7230 chipset featuring an 800 MHzScorpion CPU and an Adreno 205 GPU.This certainly isn’t the most powerful duoin the smartphone kingdom, but definitely not the slowest either – and actually better than we expected to see.

It keeps things runningsmoothly in the OS, with occasional lag, when youview HD videos for instance. Also onboard is a5 MP camera that canrecord HD-ready videos(720p@30fps), Wi-Fi 802.11n, Bluetooth2.1, 3G HSDPA, GPS, and2 GB of storage that canbe boosted via a microSDslot that supports cards upto 32 GB in size.

ConclusionHuawei’s IDEOS X5 smartphone isn’t the mostexciting Android-runningmobile around, but for aalmost entry-level R2799you do get some very nicemid-range specs. [HD]

With pocket-friendly measurements(120 x 62 x 11.6 mm) and quite a

large 3.8" capacitive touch-screen, theHauwei X5’s 480 x 800 resolution compares very favourably to otherbudget conscious, Android-poweredsmartphones’ screens. This includes thelikes of the LG Optimus One’s 3.2" (320 x480) TFT capacitive touch-screen and the3.2" (320 x 480) touch-screen ofSamsung’s new Galaxy Gio.

The TFT touch-screen of the IDEOS X5features multi-touch capabilities such aspinch-to-zoom, which works well whenzooming in and out webpages via thestandard Android browser or feature richDolphin Browser HD. There are touch- enabled displays boasting superior resolutions, including the iPhone 4’s

home-screen and access theFacebook app. Hopefully asoftware update from HTC canrectify this since, like mostpeople, we check our feedsmore than we actually postupdates.

The ChaCha packs a800 MHz processor and 512MB of memory, whichmanages to run Android 2.3(Gingerbread) and HTC’supdated Sense interfacesmoothly, with no notableproblems in terms ofnavigating the familiarAndroid interface. Thescreen, despite having a480 x 320 resolution, was nonetheless sharpand bright enough, even if

it wasn’t exceptional.

To the pointThe HTC ChaCha offers an excellent typingexperience, better specs than similarlypriced offers from BlackBerry and quickaccess to update your Facebook status. Ifonly the Facebook button gave instantaccess to your news feed too. It retails fora low R2350. [RN]

Samsung Omnia 7 ›› A more intuitive user experiencebrighter, but the superior resolution (640x 960) of the iPhone’s Retina Displayequates to better detail on images.

Redmond poweredAs snazzy as the smartphone’s display, isits Windows Phone 7 OS, sporting a design-conscious look and feel. Its epicentre is the Start screen, populated by movable “tiles”,representing shortcuts to filesand apps. Swipe right andyou’re taken to the mainmenu, consisting of a list ofshortcuts to apps, settingsand “hubs”. Hubs include Microsoft’s Office hub, one ofthe strongest documentation

creation and editing packages available on anymobile OS.

The intuitiveness of theOS impressed, but there isroom for improvement.Firstly, there’s a single home-screen to display apps andshortcuts vertically on, eventually

equating to lots of downward scrolling.Secondly, the number of apps availablevia Microsoft’s Windows Phone AppsMarketplace (25 000), compares unfavourably to that of the Android Market (200 000+) and Apple App Store(425 000+). There isn’t a WhatsAppmessenger app or MXit app for instance. All apps were downloaded from the UK

Marketplace, as the local regional one will only beactivated later this yearwith the OS’ Mango update. Lastly, multimediafiles stored on your PCcan only be transferred toyour smartphone via Microsoft’s Zune mediapackage, which you mustdownload (119 MB).

Final wordSamsung’s Omnia 7 is asolidly built, intuitive deviceoffering some impressivespecs and as soon as Microsoft bolsters its Marketplace app count, it willbe game-on with Google andApple. The Omnia 7 retails forR5299. [HD]

The Omnia 7 measures in at a grip-friendly 118 x 60 x 12 mm, while

Samsung keeps OS lag at bay via Qualcomm’s QSD8250 1 GHz applicationprocessor, but it must be noted thatdual-core processors have become in-vogue of late for high-end smartphones. Onboard is a decent

amount (8 GB) of storage space, but unfortunately you cannot expand on this. You will also find a 5 MP camera capableof recording HD-ready (720p) videos. The most prominent design feature isthe 4" (480 x 800 pixels) Super AMOLEDcapacitive touch-screen. Samsung is no stranger to Microsoft’s Windows OS, however, the Omnia 7 is the first WindowsPhone 7 OS-running smartphonewithin its Redmond-poweredOmnia range.

“Put the smartphone next to an iPhone 4and the Omnia’s screen displays coloursmore vividly and brighter…”

Today’s smartphones can no longerjust impress performance wise, they

have to look the part as well. With its allblack front and aluminium back, the

Optimus Black gives the impression ofbeing slick, sleek, and stylish. Furthermore, the Optimus Black is thinand remarkably light, considering itslarge 4" screen, which seems to have become the standard amongst smartphones of this class. Despite measuring 122 x 64 x 9.2 mm, which is basically the same size as the SamsungGalaxy S, the Optimus Black somehowcomes across as a bit more compact.

Performance PowerThe Optimus Black’s standout feature is

arguably its brilliant NOVA screen. Witha screen resolution of 480 x 800, LG hasasserted that the phone’s 700 Nits ofbrightness (the iPhone 4 is 500 Nits)affords true blacks and whites aswell as better performance insunlight. We certainly foundthe screen to be a pleasureto read off of, offering upvibrant colours, vividvideo, and a clear browsing experience both

online and whenusing the included Facebookfor LG and Twitter for LG apps. Ofgreater interest, is that this mid-rangeoffering matches the Samsung Galaxy S(i9003) performance wise, which cameas little surprise, since it packed thesame speedy 1 GHz Cortex-A8 processorand PowerVR SGX530 GPU on the TIOMAP 3630 chipset.

Ultimately, this resulted in a smooth, stable and responsive experience of theonboard Android 2.2.2, which offered little to no lag between gestures and

their responsiveness.

Two cameras – atwo megapixel front

camera for video callsand a five megapixel

back camera for photos; 2GB of internal memory and

a MicroSD card slot thataccommodates up to 32 GB

extra storage, rounded out thesmartphone’s features.

To the pointAt a RRP of R4500, the Optimus Blackis neither cheap nor top of the range, but as the saying goes, you get whatyou pay for, and from beginning to end,the impression left is that you aregetting a great deal of smartphone, onethat would have been seen as top-endmodel just a year ago. [RN]

LG Optimus Black ›› Bright is beautifulOne of the most important features of a touch-screen smartphone is arguably its screen, and LG is hoping that the OptimusBlack P970 has what it takes tooutshine the competition.

Skullcandy hooks up with Jay-Z’sRoc Nation entertainment company, birthing the ultra-coolRoc Nation Aviator headphones. Is this another case of expensiveaudio fashion over acoustic function, or do these earphoneshave the sound power to match itspotent price tag?

Final wordSkullcandy’s Roc Nation Aviatorheadphone go for a pricey R1999, forwhich you get stylish and practical (barringthe placement of the in-line controls) setof headphones, boasting really impressivesound levels and quality, as well as a trulypalpable sense of quality in terms of construction and design. As your music playing device willmore than likely be carried insideyour pocket, the job of controllingthe music playback falls on the integrated in-line controls, located about 10 cm orso below the left ear phone cup. Thesecontrols are simple to use, but the onlyhassle is its close proximity to the headset since this makes it awkward (atleast initially) to see which button you’repressing.

“The soundquality remains excellent anddoesn’t distort atall.”

Over-the-head headphones are prettyhot right now, with the Aviators about

as cool as it gets. This thanks to a designincorporating quality metals, polycarbonate headphone cups and plushmemory foam ear cushions. A 1.3 m anti-tangle braided nylon cord means thateven the loftiest users will easily connectthe ear gear.

files. We collect this behaviouralpattern in our cloud from users’ ofKaspersky Lab products. Before, weonly checked executable files (.exe),but right now we detect and have infoin our cloud database about dynamiclibraries (dls), drivers and info aboutPDF files because of new PDF exploits.Another good example is the anti-rootkit technology; because more andmore malware try to go deeper, sit inthe system and try even to infect microboot records (mbr) of the disk. This isnot rootkit but bootkit, the mostcomprehensive. I can say that it isbasically generation 2.0 of cloudprotection that we are introducing withKaspersky Internet Security 2012.

TS: Are we going to see anti-viruspackages for tablets too?NG: During an internal meeting inApril, I already demonstrated to all ourR+D employees a prototype of anAndroid tablet anti-virus and securitysolutions, and yes, we will beintroducing protection for Androidtablets later this year. Because we don’tjust see malware as a treat, but alsoprivacy issues, phishing and socialengineering, we have to pay attentionto this too. Plus unwanted content, mostly for children.

KIS 2012 boasts witha redesigned userinterface, whichalthough moreminimalistic, stillrequires a fair amountof familiarisationbefore receiving themost benefits fromthis quite powerfulpackage. And a lot of

functionality thereindeed is, with themost obvious beingcomputer scanning, intensive parentalcontrols and a firewall.Anti-spam and anti-banner technology are alsoonboard, along with a few interestingtools that grabbed our attention. We likeSystem Watcher, which checks how adownloaded application behaves, allowing you to roll-back if it bringsabout any malicious changes. One of the last things we want to bepaying attention to while working, is

managing our internet security package.

It should update quietly at anappropriate time (preferably not afterboot-up), not distract with constantnotifications, but of course provideeffective protection when needed. This isindeed the case with Kaspersky Lab’sInternet Security 2012. Like mostsimiliar packages it required a fairamount of input from our side atinstallation, but after this initial phasewe were rarely bothered by it.

Lots of functionalityThe KIS 2012 package hides a lot offunctionality, which can all be foundeither in the main control panel or arather large control “icon” that resideson your desktop (yes it is removable).

that adds an extralayer of protectionfor websites whensecurity is required.

Cloud onboardKIS 2012 benefitsfrom improvedcloud protection(see interviewabove) provided bythe KasperskySecurity Network. This networkmonitors datacoming in from allKaspersky usersconnected to it,building a databaseof safe downloads, malicious

applications andpotential threats. When

downloading a new application forexample, KIS will tell you that this hasbeen downloaded x-amount of times byKaspersky users and it’s generallyconsidered safe.

KIS 2012 is a very comprehensiveinternet security package which is quietbut effective. There’s far morefunctionality than described here, withthe added benefit of hybrid protectionvia the cloud. [MJ]

The aim ofthe partnership is to allow customers easyaccess to insurance against theft, electronic or accidental damage atpurchase level.

Santam offers parents the following tipsto properly insure their teenager’s assets:

• Talk to your teen before he or sheleaves home and try and help themunderstand the risks that they mayface, what insurance is about and howto adequately protect themselves.

• Don’t under insure. If you pay R6000for a laptop and only insure it forR5000, only 80% of the loss will be paidout when you claim.

• It is critical to ensure that the value ofyour teenager’s possessions is updatedon the policy at regular intervals.

• All of Santam’s insurance policies arewritten in Plain English and aretherefore easy to understand. If you arethe policy holder, make sure that theyhave a copy of the policy so that theyknow who to call in case anythinghappens and you are out of reach.

• Read and understand the insurancepolicies you have taken out for yourteenager so that you know whatprocedure to follow in the event ofhaving to make a claim.

This question takes onan all too menacing

form with the appearance of a seemingly undefeatableenemy, known as TheBeast. In order to ampup his powers and

defeat The Beast, our protagonist, Cole, goes to New Marais accompanied by NSAagent Kuo and his friend Zeke Dunbar. The city is ruled with an iron fist by themaniacal dictator Joseph Bertrand II, whomanages to make Muammar Gaddafi looklike Tinky Winky.

More powersTo defeat the game’s assortment of baddies you get to use a new meleeweapon called the Amp, through whichCole channels his electric energy to shockopponents while bashing them into submission. Joining the Amp and the firstgame’s batch of powers, such as Zeus-likeelectric bolts and exploding electricgrenades, is Cole’s shockingly cool newelectric abilities. These include ourfavourite, the Ionic Vortex, a tornado

inFAMOUS 2 poses a simplequestion: if you had superpowers– would you save the world or destroy it?

inFAMOUS 2 ›› With awesome electric superpowers...made up of pure electricity, which wreakshavoc on the unfortunate souls you unleash it upon.

A world to discoverCole can freely move around the city andclimb over almost any nearby structure.Developers, Sucker Punch, has retainedthe automated grappling system of thefirst game, which sees Cole automatically gripping onto the nearest available surfacewhilst jumping. This helps you to easilyget from one place to another, but it canalso be a curse, particularly during sections where you have to employ splitsecond timing during jumps. Cole cangrab onto the nearest, but wrong, object, leading to your death. It’s not only thephysical path in New Marais that you canfollow, but also a “spiritual” one. You canbe either good or bad, guarding the citizenry or regarding them as expendable. The game includes variousside missions that assist you in makingthis choice and completing these alsogives you experience points that you useto buy upgraded powers.

ConclusioninFAMOUS 2 is incredibly entertaining andsports some added fun courteousy of theadditional powers. It doesn’t really bringanything new to the genre, but for a RRPof R599 you’ll be too busy flinging cars

around like theywere toys tocare. [HD]

GAMES

The original Dungeon Siege wasone of the games which helpedshape the modern Role PlayingGame (RPG) experience, introducing players to cavernousloot-filled dungeons, party members and 3D graphics. Canthe third iteration keep up thepace?

Unlike the previousgames, story actually

takes on a much moreprominent role in Dungeon Siege III(DS3), with lots of effortput into weaving thegame’s tale and attempting to create

believable characters. The story is onceagain set in the Kingdom of Ehb, andtakes place roughly 150 years after theevents of the first game. We find the10th Legion, noble protectors of the land, almost completely wiped out, with theevil Jeyne Kassynder enforcing her willupon the kingdom. It’s up to our heroesto put an end to this sad state of affairs, but while the story definitely seems ambitious, its delivery lacked the scaleand ‘epicness’ to really make it stick.

Dungeon Siege III ›› Classic fantasy fighting

Somewhat forgettable characters withrather shallow voice acting doesn’t help inthis aspect either, and it all culminated ina storyline that, whilst enjoyable, didn’tmanage to pull us in and say “Wow!” likea Diablo, Dragon Age or Elder Scrolls can.

LootDS3’s vanilla RPG experience is strong, and as always there’s a certain addictiveaspect to seeing your lowly rag-coveredhero turn into an armour plated wielder ofswords and magic as you progressthroughout the game. The title does agood job of pacing valuable drops soyou’ll always want to inspect the nextroom or smash open that next crate tocheck if something valuable can be plundered. Your inventory containsenough slots to house a fair amount ofgear, and a mechanic we enjoyed is theability to turn excess items into gold rightfrom within your inventory screen.

ConclusionDungeon Siege III manages to get a lotof things right, but at the same time destroys a lot of elements that didn’tneed changing in the first place, such asthe co-op element and a wonky camera. The game makes an admirable attempt at appealing to the console crowd, and ifyou enjoy your straightforward dungeon

looting quests, then the gamewill satisfy. Alsokeep in mind thatthe single playercampaign in DungeonSiege III is only worthsix to ten hours ofgameplay, depending on howfast you progress.[JK]
