RACE AGAINST THE MACHINETechnovate Provides Instrumental TranslationAs a nonprofit organization, the mission of Robotique FIRST Quebec is to bring educational projects to local schools in an effort to counteract dropout rates and promote student retention. Spearheading major projects annually, their passion is to sponsor local students in an international high school robotics competition organized by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recogni-tion of Science and Technology). “After discovering the FIRST Robotics competition a few years ago, we knew we had to bring it to public schools in Quebec,” says Rachid Abiza of Robotique FIRST Quebec. “It’s a technical sport that provides a fun, educational opportunity that many of these schools wouldn’t otherwise have without the financial assistance that our sponsoring organizations provide.”

A Short Circuit There was just one problem: the rules, regulations and technical specs for the competition were printed only in English. Rachid explains, “Since we’d be distributing these documents to public schools here in Canada, we’re legally required to provide rules in both English and French.”

As Robotique FIRST Quebec quickly discovered, the robotics competition is serious business. The regulations and robot-building specifications are kept secret until their public release date, after which teams have exactly six weeks to complete their projects. Rachid recalls, “Because everything is highly confidential, the competition committee would not provide us with a copy of the rules ahead of time so that we could begin the translation proc-ess.” As such, the schools they sponsor would be at a major disadvantage if the translation process was delayed until after the official release date.

A Robotic Competition with a Personal Touch “With such a high-stakes competition that hosts over 45,000 students from around the world, I understood where the committee was coming from ” says Rachid. “But if we couldn’t figure out how to get the documents translated ahead of time and within the rules ofconfidentiality, our students in Quebecwouldn't be able to participate andwould be very disappointed.”

“Technovate took care of everything down to the last detail and provided a comprehensive translation solution that fit our budget and exceeded my expectations.”

- Rachid Abiza, Robotique FIRST Quebec

In a panic, he began an extensive search and discovered Technovate Translations – a corporate agency providing full-service translation in over 150 languages. Technovate offered to send an expert translator to work onsite at the FIRST Robotics United States headquarters under careful watch. “This was far from standard practice. But Technovate went out of their way to prioritize our needs and come up with a personalized translation solution that was sensitive to the confidentiality issue and accommodated our unique circumstances,” says Rachid. Transforming the Technical Specs As you might expect, the nature of the translation was highly technical and Technovate was able to rise to the challenge as Rachid points out. “With robotic specifications and other technical detail, this wasn’t just an ordinary transla-tion job. This was 20,000 words of very technical information which had to be completed in a relatively short period of time … and Technovate came through with flying colors.”

Remote Control Perhaps more impressive, according to Rachid, was Technovate’s willingness to manage all the logistics of sending a translator onsite and over the holiday

season. At first, he thought he would need to find a translation provider based in the U.S. But after speaking with Technovate, he says, “I didn’t have to micromanage the project or worry about booking flights and hotels for the translator. Technovate took care of everything down to the last detail and provided a comprehensive service that fit our budget and far exceeded my expec-tations. Their corporate location became a non-issue and it was flawless execution from start to finish.” Artificial Intelligence, Real Learning With the timely and accurate translation provided by Technovate, Robotique FIRST Quebec was successful in bringing the popular robotics competition to public schools in Canada. In fact, four of the schools they sponsored that year went on to compete at the international champion-ship and one school from Montreal won the Rookie All Star award at the finals. “Even if they didn’t win an award, to see our public school kids rubbing elbows with students from some of the most prestig-ious academies around the world made it all worthwhile for me personally and for our organization,” says Rachid. “We are so grateful for Technovate’s exceptional work.”
