1. Easy replacement
a. Using Step7 V5.x
Pre-requirement 1: S7 CPUs supporting the easy replacement feature are:
CPU S7-300: CPU 319F-3 PN/DP and CPU 319-3 PN/DP (firmware version 2.7 and upper) CPU 317F-2 PN/DP, CPU 317-2 PN/DP, CPU 315F-2 PN/DP and CPU 315-2 PN/DP (firmware version 3.1 and upper), CPU 314C-2 PN/DP (firmware version 3.3) CPU S7-400: CPU 412-2 PN and CPU 414F-3 PN/DP (firmware version 6.0) CPU 414-3 PN/DP, CPU 416-3 PN/DP and CPU 416F-3 PN/DP (firmware version 5.2 and upper) Pre-requirement 2: Molex Product Version (minimum): TBDEP-4YYP-D8U (PV 1.2.0.0) / TBDEP-
8YYP-D84 (PV 2.2.1.0) / TBDEP-4xxP-D8U-G (PV 1.2.0.0) / TBDEP-8xxP-D84-G (PV 2.2.1.0) /
TCDEP-8xxP-DxU-G (PV 2.1.3.0) / TCDEP-8YYX-DxU-01 (PV 2.1.7.0) / TCIEP-888P-D1U (PV 1.0.0.0)
Pre-requirement 3: Minimum version GSDML-V2.3-MOLEX-HARSHIO300_IP67-20140520.xml &
GSDML-V2.25-MOLEX-HARSHIO600_TCDEP-20120110.xml. Download Center.
Pre-requirement 4: In the device replacement procedure, the spare device must have no device name
when the user will swap the defective device with this spare part. If the spare device has an out-of box
device name, then use Step7 tool to perform factory reset command so that the device name will be set
to “blank” as requested.

If the above pre-requirements are fulfilled, the user can configure the device replacement mode by
checking the box “Support device replacement without exchangeable medium” as shown below:
Once done, you need to go to the topology editor. Select and highlight the PROFINET network, right
click and go to PROFINET IO Topology editor. (See below)
This topology configuration will define the Ethernet port interconnection between the Molex IO module
and the Siemens CPU. This configuration must match the real physical topology.
The figure below is an example of topology between Molex module and CPU, the port 1 of the module is
physically connected to the port 1 of the CPU.

After finishing the topology configuration, click on OK and download the configuration in the PLC.
Once the configuration is downloaded to the PLC, there is nothing else to do. The user will just need to
swap physically the defective device by the spare part without additional actions.
Note! In case of using a PROFINET Switch physically between the Molex IO module and Siemens CPU, you will need to add the GSDML of this switch in the STEP7 library (only if it does not exist in the list). Then add the Switch in the hardware configuration and then go back to topology editor to link the Ethernet ports of the Molex module and CPU to the switch the same way it’s physically connected.
b. Using TIA Portal.
b.1 Using old CPUs versions
Pre-requirement 1: In addition to S7-300 and S7-400 CPU listed in the previous paragraph, all the S7-
1200 (Firmware version < 4.1) and S7-1500 (Firmware version < 1.5) PLCs that support the device
replacement feature under TIA portal tool.
Pre-requirement 2: Molex Product Version (minimum): TBDEP-4YYP-D8U (PV 1.2.0.0) / TBDEP-
8YYP-D84 (PV 2.2.1.0) / TBDEP-4xxP-D8U-G (PV 1.2.0.0) / TBDEP-8xxP-D84-G (PV 2.2.1.0) /
TCDEP-8xxP-DxU-G (PV 2.1.3.0) / TCDEP-8YYX-DxU-01 (PV 2.1.7.0) / TCIEP-888P-D1U (PV 1.0.0.0)
Pre-requirement 3: Minimum version GSDML-V2.3-MOLEX-HARSHIO300_IP67-20140520.xml &
GSDML-V2.25-MOLEX-HARSHIO600_TCDEP-20120110.xml. Download Center.

device name, then use TIA portal tool to perform factory reset command so that the device name will be
set to “blank” as requested.
If the above pre-requirements are fulfilled, the user can configure the device replacement mode by
checking the box “Support device replacement without exchangeable medium” as shown below:

Once done, you need to go to the topology view. Double click on “Devices & networks” and then open
the “Topology view”. (See below)
This topology configuration will define the Ethernet port interconnection between the Molex IO module
and the Siemens CPU. This configuration must match the real physical topology.
The figure below is an example of topology between Molex module and CPU, the port 1 of the module is

b.2 Using new CPUs versions
Pre-requirement 1: S7-1500 PLCs with firmware V1.5 and upper and S7-1200 PLCs with firmware
V4.1 only.
Pre-requirement 2: Molex Product Version (minimum): TBDEP-4YYP-D8U (PV 1.2.0.0) / TBDEP-
8YYP-D84 (PV 2.2.1.0) / TBDEP-4xxP-D8U-G (PV 1.2.0.0) / TBDEP-8xxP-D84-G (PV 2.2.1.0) /
TCDEP-8xxP-DxU-G (PV 2.1.3.0) / TCDEP-8YYX-DxU-01 (PV 2.1.7.0) / TCIEP-888P-D1U (PV 1.0.0.0)
Pre-requirement 3: Minimum version GSDML-V2.3-MOLEX-HARSHIO300_IP67-20140520.xml &
GSDML-V2.25-MOLEX-HARSHIO600_TCDEP-20120110.xml. Download Center.
In addition to the feature “Support device replacement without exchangeable medium”, the last firmware
of S7-1500 CPUs (firmware version 1.5 and upper) and S7-1200 CPUs (firmware version 4.1 only) gives
to the user the possibility to choose another option that allows the PLC to overwrite the device name of
the IO-Device. This option is called “Permit overwriting of device names of all assigned IO devices”. So
there is no longer need to fulfil Pre-requirement 3.
To configure the overwriting option in TIA portal tool, the user needs to check the box “Permit
overwriting of device names of all assigned IO devices” as shown below :

Note! Link all the devices in a ring topology. It must match the real physical network topology.
Once the configuration is downloaded to the PLC, there is nothing else to do.
b. Using TIA portal V1x ( with PROFINET switch)
Pre-requirement 1: S7 CPUs supporting MRP feature.
Pre-requirement 2: Molex Product Version (minimum): TCDEP-8xxP-DxU-G (PV 2.1.3.0) / TCDEP-

The PROFINET switch will be configured as IO device. It will be the manager of the MRP network.
Firstly link the devices in the topology view before configuring the MRP roles. The tool TIA portal will
assign automatically the MRP ports once the roles are defined.
The network topology will be as follows.
Note! Link all the devices in a ring topology. It must match the real physical network topology.
The PROFINET switch must be configured as MRP manager.
