How Fuel Savings are Acheived

The fans for heavy duty diesel engines draw considerable horsepower. Minimizing fan operation

leads directly to significant fuel savings.

Demonstrated Fuel Savings

Retrofitting a Mack MR688S (from the solid waste industry) with Evans coolant, with raising the fan-on temperature to 230o F, and increasing the fan off temp, showed an overall improvement of over 7%!

SAE Type II test at PAVE Research Institute, using Evans Waterless HDTC with 215oF thermostats, proved a fuel economy improvement in excess of 3%!

SAE Type II Test Proves 3.04% Improvement in Fuel Economy!

• Test was conducted Jan. 2009 by the PAVE Institute at Auburn Univ.

• Evans Waterless Coolant and 215oF thermostats were used.

• Radiator fans were locked “on” to remove the fans as variables.

• Full report is available.

Example of Typical Savings for a Fleet of 300 Trucks

For fleets averaging: • 5.5 mpg • $2.25 per gallon

• 100,000 miles annually

A typical conversion cost of $600-$800 per truck

pays for itself in 4 - 8 months!

Annual fuel cost is $40,909 per truck.

A 5% improvement in fuel economy yields an

annual savings of $2,045 per truck, or $613,635 for the entire fleet!

A 3% improvement in fuel economy yields an

annual savings of $1,227 per truck, or $368,181 for the entire fleet!

Reduces Maintenance Costs

Waterless formula avoids corrosion and electrolysis.

The absence of vapor forms a lower pressure system.• Reduces stress on cooling system hoses reduces likelihood

of leaks; any leakage is not a high pressure spray phenomenon.

HDTC is a lifetime coolant; replacement cost is eliminated! • Evans HDTC contains additives that remain stable and in

suspension during storage and use, eliminating the need for replacement.

Lengthens engine life by preventing pump and cylinder liner cavitation.• Cavitation test showed significant reduction of cylinder

liner cavitation.

Evans Waterless HDTC performed best in the

“John Deere Engine Cavitation Test”

The John Deere Engine Cavitation Test, a 250 hour dynamometer test, is highly predictive of real-world cavitation erosion of cylinder liners. It is expected to be approved by the ASTM as the definitive test method.

The test procedure was performed in April 2009 by a third-party laboratory using Evans HDTC.

The results were so good that no water-based formulations, even ELC formulations, regardless of additives, come close.

Page 10: Technology to Unlock your Engines Reserve Capacity Evans Cooling Systems, Inc

Durability implications of using HDTC

Endurance of the engine is improved by maintaining control of engine metal temperatures at all times.

The absence of cavitation erosion extends the life of cylinder liners and coolant pumps.

No abrasive additive deposits.• Pump seals last longer• Hoses and gaskets won’t deteriorate

Low system pressure puts less stress on hoses and cooling system plumbing.

Page 11: Technology to Unlock your Engines Reserve Capacity Evans Cooling Systems, Inc

Environmentally Friendly

Evans Waterless HDTC contains an inhibitor that lowers the toxicity of ethylene glycol.

Disposal and replacement costs are reduced or eliminated.• 80% of coolant produced goes to refill or top off leaking

cooling systems.• Only 12% of all antifreeze produced in the United States is

recycled each year.

Fuel savings mean less carbon dioxide emissions:• A 3% fuel savings = 5,550 less lbs of CO2 emissions

annually.*• A 5% fuel savings = 8,800 less lbs of CO2 emissions

annually.*

*Average of 50,000 miles per year , 6 mpg (@ 22.2 lbs of CO2 emitted per gallon of diesel).

Evans Waterless HD Thermal Coolant

A blend of glycols, soluble additives, and no water.

Boiling point: 375o F, freezing point: <-70o F.

Low conductivity – no “battery effect”.

HDTC is a lifetime coolant if it does not become contaminated with water.

Reduced Toxicity

Why is “Waterless” so Important?

What is Good about Water in a Coolant?

Water has been the choice for cooling engines for over 100 years for very good

reasons:

1. Water is cheap.2. Water is available.3. Water has superior thermal conductivity

- in its liquid state.

Page 14: Technology to Unlock your Engines Reserve Capacity Evans Cooling Systems, Inc

What is Bad about Water in a Coolant?

The low boiling point of water (212o F to 220o F) becomes the failure temperature of traditional cooling systems.

Water is corrosive and promotes electrolysis between dissimilar metals within the cooling system.

Localized boiling causes vapor pockets that interrupt heat transfer; water retains just 4% of it’s thermal conductivity when it changes to vapor.

The energy that it takes to maintain coolant temperatures below the boiling point of water

is a huge waste of fuel.

Page 15: Technology to Unlock your Engines Reserve Capacity Evans Cooling Systems, Inc

Thermal Conductivity Comparison

Energy is consumed to keep coolant temp below boiling point and prevent vaporization.

Evans HDTC removes the

barrier, saving

energy and fuel.

Page 16: Technology to Unlock your Engines Reserve Capacity Evans Cooling Systems, Inc

Evans HDTC Separates the Boiling Point of the Coolant

from its Operating Temperature.

An engine operating temperature of 230o F is more than 100o F less than the boiling point of Evans HDTC.

Evans Waterless HDTC decreases formation of vapor.• In the case of water based coolants, the glycol

component of the vapor condenses readily, leaving water vapor.

• The temperature at which water vapor condenses is the boiling point of water, not the boiling point of water based coolants.

• Heat transfer is not interrupted by insulating layers of water vapor.

With Evans HDTC the boiling point of water is no longer a

limitation.

Page 17: Technology to Unlock your Engines Reserve Capacity Evans Cooling Systems, Inc

Coolant Failure Temperatures

Typical coolant operating temperatures are near the failure temperatures of water-based coolants (bottom curve) but are much

colder than the failure temperatures of HDTC (top curve).

Page 18: Technology to Unlock your Engines Reserve Capacity Evans Cooling Systems, Inc

Evans Waterless HDTC Unlocks a Reserve Capacity.

With Evans HDTC, the huge separation between operating temperature and coolant boiling point unlocks a reserve capacity. • The reserve capacity increases the engine’s capability to operate safely

at higher temperatures, without introducing thermal stress. • Under high thermal stress conditions, Evans HDTC will run warmer but

the cooling system will not fail; metal temperatures remain under control.

Cooling system continues to function after shut down:• No after boil.• No increase in system pressure.• Engine can be restarted at any time.
