Technology and Academic Achievement
• Over 5 billion dollars a year have been spent on technology in the classroom.
• Many teachers take advantage of this opportunity but there are many teachers (up to half) do not.
• According to Larry Cuban even most of the teachers who use technology in their classroom do not truly use it to actually improve learning.
• Those in favor of technology in the classroom can only depend on their belief that it will help motivate students to learn.
• There is still not a whole lot of evidence proving the theory.
• Some observers wonder if their time would be better spent on other educational needs.
• Many organizations such as Edutopia, the North Central Educational Lab (NCREL) and the Center for Applied Research in Educational Technology (CARET) have been working on studies that link technology and academic achievement.
• One such study showed that teachers who had training and skill in technology could use it to help students focus on simulations and applications that encouraged students to develop problem solving skills.
• Two studies were done that argued that when combining technology and instructional strategies result in improvements in student learning.
• They also discuss that if people want teachers to use technology then the teachers themselves need to be armed with the knowledge of how to use the technology they are expected to use.
Technology can create a fun way to learn new things. However if the teacher is not clear on the selected form of technology and can actually render a student’s learning. For instance, if a teacher wants a student to create a web page for a project, but the student is not familiar with this process and the teacher does not explain clearly how to do this task, the student will become so lost and frustrated that he will not end up actually learning anything. Following are some examples of some ways to use the web to have fun learning.
The Knowledge Web (k-web)
• What is it?– The knowledge web is a fun
interactive way to achieve understanding and inspiring the formation of ideas.
– It also helps demonstrate that the world is a direct effect of ideas and past events.
• What does it do?– shows how all subjects are connected. – Offers an inventive tool for discovery.– Helps students to not just consume
material but to also create material– Students can receive information through
whatever means that they want• text, video, simulations and immersive virtual
reality
• Tell me more– Certain people and places are recreated in
virtual reality• You can chat with DeVinci in his studio and more!
– The following link lets you be the head of state

• My personal Opinion– This is a great idea. It’s a fun way for students
to really be interactive with their learning.– Kids need a way to learn that will really hold
their attention and let them really soak in the concept instead of just learning it enough for the next test and then forgetting all about it afterward.
– This concept of K-web is an remarkable way to help kids actually want to learn.
Learning with the Internet
• Isn’t the internet already used vastly in the education system?– The answer is yes, however now the issue
that is prominent is how its going to be used effectively to employ such technologies and completely connect the new opportunities created by them to encourage positive student learning experiences.
• The internet offers a vast amount of information from numerous sources.
• What are the tools the internet offers?– Tools for
• Inquiry• Communication• Construction
• Tools for inquiry– Provides a way of finding sources of
information fitting to a task, working to comprehend the information resources and how they relate to the task, and possibly applying this understanding in a helpful way
– enhances students' knowledge by facilitating their access to resources this can even include experts in the field, even being able to interact with them
– exposure to real life situations of the world beyond their home can assist in training the students to face the uncertainties of the ever-changing world
• Tools for communication– Includes many forms such as e-mail,
mailing lists, newsgroups, chat and videoconferencing
– this interaction can provide communication between students and professionals in distant places, cultures and traditions
– Beneficial to teachers• can be in touch with other
teachers
• Tools for construction– varieties of authentic learning activities for
students• Can promote the development of students'
thinking skills– They are able to express their understanding by
building products like web pages
• Students can control their own learning growth according to their own experiences and expertise
• can access numerous resources at their own pace and have significant interactions with the information
Conclusion• Technology can be whatever we choose to make it• If we take the time to truly learn the vast opportunities it
provides then we as teachers or prospective teachers can then effectively use it in the classroom to enhance the students’ learning experience while in the process having fun. We can make learning fun and interesting again.
• We can also cause complete confusion if we don’t take the time to really understand how to use the technology that we are planning on presenting in the classroom. We could leave the students’ confused, lost, and frustrated.
• Technology can be a great tool and one of those tools is the internet. Although it is widely used students need to be able to know all the possibilities the internet can provide.
My opinion• The internet has caused a huge revolution in the way
society finds information, therefore, it only makes since that in would be incorporated in the school systems. I believe that the use of the internet should be taught in classes. There are so many opportunities but students do not always realize how much can actually be done when using the internet. Many adults believe that the younger generation just knows how to navigate through the internet but its really not true. We as students know how to type a subject into google or get on facebook, myspace, and aim but may not always know how to effectively find perhaps and article, write a blog, find graphs, etc. So I think its important they learn the true tools of the internet.
