Purpose of transmission line towers
3
• Economy is becoming increasingly dependent on electricity as a basic input. Transmission lines provide the means of connecting the generating capacities to the load centers

• Mild steel to High tensile steel to Super High tensile steel
• Ground Wire to OPGW
• High Temperature Low sag conductors
• Single circuit to Double Circuit to Multi circuit
• Twin conductors to Quad bundle to Six bundle to Eight bundle conductors
• Higher KV lines i.e., 800 kV HVDC, 1200 kV S/C & D/C and 765 kV D/C
• Use of Google, GPS, Total work station and LIDER survey techniques
• Use of PLSCADD for profiling

AUGUR TYPE FOUNDATION
Auger type foundations
- For information: Bauer GMbH (Germany)’s anchordrill machines are suitable to drill up to 508mmdiameter bore.
- Truck Mounted Rigs E.g.: With Bauer’s TBG 12 Rig, up to 1300mm diameter bore (un cased) and 36.82m depth is possible.

Transmission Lines
Right of way
28
• Right of way width is important in the case of the following:• Densely Populated areas• Non-availability of required conventional
width of ROW• High Cost of Land• Forest areas• To conserve flora and fauna• Narrow constrained geography with no
other alternative
• Right of way widths vary based on the voltage of the transmission line to be installed within the corridor.

Strategies to conserve Right of way
29
• New transmission tower Designs for transferring bulk power and minimizing ROW i.e., 765 kV Double Circuit (D/C) & Multi Circuit (M/C), 1200 kV Single Circuit (S/C) and 800 kV HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) towers. The side table mentions about ROW & capacity utilization of bulk EHV Transmission lines. By going for EHV transmission lines in the ranges of 800 kV & 1200 kV we are transferring maximum power per meter width of available corridor.
• These days many Power utilities in India i.e., POWERGRID, SEB’s & IPTC’s are going for Double and Multi circuit lines instead of Single circuit lines to minimize ROW

Strategies to conserve Right of way
32
• Up gradation of existing lines by using Highthermal rating conductors: This method of upgradation of existing lines by high temp andlow sag conductors is becoming veryimportant particularly where ROW becomesvery important. Presently we are working onPOWERGRID’s project of upgrading of 400kVSiliguri-Purnea Transmission Line which ispassing through the Chicken neck area havingserious ROW constraints.

High temperature and low sag conductors
33
• Various types of high temperature and low sag conductors in practice are:• ACSS (Aluminium Conductor Steel
Supported)• INVAR Conductor• GAP Conductor• ACCR (Aluminium Conductor Composite
Reinforced)• ACCC (Aluminium Conductor Composite
Core)000000``
Transmission Lines
High temperature and low sag conductors
34
• These conductors can be operated at 200° C. Steel core (High strength) carries most of the load and hence less sag when compared to conventional ACSR conductor under high temperature.
• High temperature low sag conductors can carry around 2.5 times the power capacity when compared to normal ACSR conductor.

• Construction friendlyDesigns i.e., erectable byhelicopter or heavy craneswhich changes currenterection methodologies toincrease the productivityin construction
• Lifting points were specified in this project for tower lifting by helicopter.
• To reduce the construction cost the numbers of joints were reduced.
