One Small Step

• Space Race- A Race of technological superiority Between Russia and America, to see who could make the most advancements space wise. Russia was the first with a man to orbit the earth, and also the first who put a satellite in space; but in 1969 a U.S. astronaut,Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon.

In 1945-1960 people stopped buying radios and doubled the sale in television sets. Soon people forgot drive-in’s and stayed home to watch t.v.

Satellites made communication easy and fast. Satellites are used to relay information to television, computers and phones. It was first used by businessman Ted Turner to run the first super station.[an independent broadcast station]in 1957 the first satellite was launched by Russia although in 1963 the first communications satellite was launched.

Transportation and MigrationNew highways to more

cities• This event was aimed

towards making transportation easier. It was authorized funds to build 41,000 miles of highway that has multilane expressways that would connect the nation’s major cities in the U.S. President Eisenhower wanted to ease automobile travel so he authorized the first funding of the Interstate Highway System in 1953 and Congress passed legislation in 1956. The highways could not have been built without Eisenhower’s say-so. Some Americans would be stuck taking a longer route to other cities if this event did not happen.

Americans on the Move• More than 40 million

Americans moved to the suburbs between 1940 and 1960. Rural areas suffered a dramatic decline in population. People went to the suburbs because the nation suffered a shortage of urban housing. William Levitt was a leader in mass production of suburban homes.During WWII, new housing construction almost came to a halt but developers figured out how to build fast, affordable housing. Levitt built three towns called Levittowns that were affordable and fast.

What Sparked the Desire and Pursuit of Computers

Rivalries in world war II is really what sparked the creation of the computer. Both sides wanted the most up to date technology.

The U.S. government funded research which led to the development of the machine. And in 1946 the first modern computer was created which took up the entire basement of a research lab. At the time, the machine was used to calculate artillery ranges, and perform computations for the atomic bomb.

Further Development

GROWTH OF PERSONAL COMPUTERS By the 80’s, personal computers

were really starting to get out there. Being used in research labs, universities and held data for businesses.

Computers also opened up doors for entrepreneurs such as bill gates that developed software cheap enough for consumers and also easy enough for the average person to operate. That really led to the revolution of household computers.

Computers also eventually led to the development of the Internet.

What sparked the idea and pursuit of the “internet”?

During cold war, U.S. government and universities joined efforts to connect computers to communicate in an instant and access information.

CREATION AND SPREAD OF THE “WORLD WIDE WEB”

By the 1980s, the internet was created,

and spread to the public in about 1996 because people saw all the possibilities the internet possessed such as a great tool for education, communication, research, entertainment and international trade.

IDEA AND PURSUIT OF CELL PHONE

The idea of a telephone The idea of a telephone outside of the house to use outside of the house to use mobile was really generated mobile was really generated by those that used two-way by those that used two-way radios such as in radios such as in ambulances, police cruisers ambulances, police cruisers and taxis. However these and taxis. However these were not connected through were not connected through a telephone line. They were a telephone line. They were only useful if close. only useful if close.

A man named Martin Cooper A man named Martin Cooper sparked the creation of cell sparked the creation of cell phones. It took Cooper about ten phones. It took Cooper about ten years to actually get the idea of years to actually get the idea of mobile phones out there to get it mobile phones out there to get it to spread. He mainly created it for to spread. He mainly created it for communication purposes communication purposes because he saw the potential in because he saw the potential in telephone technology that could telephone technology that could be developed into cellular be developed into cellular telephones.telephones.
