Summary
A Greek company has developed a patented natural biostimulant which increases the crop's
yield and improves the quality of the harvest. The company is interested in establishing
commercial agency and/or distribution services agreement with companies active in the
fertilizers, soil amendments and bio-stimulants industry or in the R&D field to find partners for
potential Horizon 2020 projects.
Details
Description
A Greek company active in the field of fertilizers has produced a patented natural biostimulant,
in a condensed brown-black liquid form which is capable to increase the crop’s yield and improve
the quality of the harvest. The agrochemical product which is organic is made of a combination
of seaweed plant extracts and hydrolyzed proteins which are derived from a cold enzymetic
hydrolysis of fresh fish. Also the product is rich in nutrients , it contains amino acids of plant and
animal (fish) origin, vitamins, carbohydrates and also as natural plant growth factors (cytokins,
auxins, and gibberellins), that are necessary for the improvement of the harvest quality and the
increase of the crop yield.
Studies have proven that the application of the solution results in:
1. The enhancement of the plant growth
2. The increase of the fruits’ content in proteins, sugars and micronutrients.
3. The increase of the size, number and weight of the fruits
4. The improvement of the uniformity of the fruits in a crop
5. The improvement of fruits appearance
6. The enhancement of the fruits and the vegetables flavor
7. The elongation of the fruits, vegetables and flower shelf life (long shelf life).
8. The strengthening of the fruits and vegetables resistance during their transportation.
9. The increase of the number of cuttings in fodders
10. The enhancement of the flowers forming with vivid colours and scents in their crops.
The product is recommended for every crop either it is cultivated in green house or in the open
field; it can also be applied with soil application and foliarly. The product can also be used with
soil application and foliarly whereas it is suitable for both conventional and organic crops. It is
compatible with several fertilizers (including foliar fertilizers), insecticides as well as fungicides
and pesticides. The solution is an agrochemical product suitable for organic or conventional
crops. It is an organic biostimulant that can be adapted to any program of integrated
management. The product contains total nitrogen (Ν) 1.6 % w/w, Phosphorus (P2O5) 3.2 %
w/w and potassium (K2O) 1.4 % w/w. It is 100% water soluble and its density and pH is 1.1
g/cm3 & 4.3 respectively.
AGROFOOD
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 5
Generally it is applied at the following application rate: Soil application: 10-40 l/ha. Foliar
application: 2.5-8 l/ha. The product is offered in bottles of 1lt and 4lt. Overall the firm is in the
market since 1990 offering products which regard the professional as well as the amateur
farmers. Recently it has focused on products incorporating biotechnology with emphasis to the
role of microbes and funguses to the development and health of plants.
Advantages and Innovations
The product is an innovative organic liquid which is capable to enhance the quality and the
quantity of crop production. The product is the result of a combination of seaweed plant extracts
and hydrolyzed proteins which are derived from a cold enzymatic hydrolysis of fresh fish. This
special process ensures the maintenance of the fish’s vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, proteins,
oils and hormones. All the above nutrients in combination with the nutrients of the seaweed
plant extracts make the product a very effective biostimulant for the increase of the crop’s yield
and the improvement of the harvest's quality. Many studies have proven that the product’s
action on the quality and the quantity of the harvest is better than the action of a mineral
fertilizer such as the 20-20-20 and in addition, as opposed with a mineral fertilizer, the product
is suitable for the conventional as well as the organic crops.

Summary
A Greek company active in the field of fertilizers offers microbial inoculants, rich in plant
nutrients and beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria that increase gradually the nitrogen content of
the soil that is readily assimilated by plants. The company is interested in a commercial or
distribution agreement with firms active in the field of fertilizers, soil amendments and bio-
stimulants in order to expand to new markets. The company is also open for proposals under
Horizon 2020 program.
Details
Description
A Greek company, active in the field of fertilizers offers microbial inoculants, rich in plant
nutrients and beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria which increase gradually the nitrogen content of
the soil that is readily assimilated by plants.
The nitrogen-fixing bacteria included in the product benefit the plant directly via nitrogen
fixation, synthesis of phytohormones (indole-3-acetic acid, IAA) and modulation of plant’s
hormonal balance. The nitrogen-fixing bacteria are included in a liquid substrate form that
stimulates the microbial activity and contributes to the healthy growth of the root and the whole
plant. The substrate of the product contains natural plant growth factors (cytokins, auxins, and
gibberellins), vitamins (including ascorbic acid-C and Riboflavin-B2), amino acids, sugars, humic
acids and micronutrients. Because of its synthesis, the substrate of the product stimulates the
activity of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria, promotes the growth of the plants’ root and shoots
resulting in soil structure improvement.
Some of the benefits of the proposed solution are the gradual increase of the soil’s nitrogen
content which is readily available and the phosphorus uptake by plants. It can also eliminate the
use of chemical nitrogen fertilizers by replacing them at a significant extent which is
environmental friendly. Additionally the product contributes to the equable growth of the crops.
It improves the soil fertility and maintains the natural habitat of the soil, it adds organic matter
in the soil and it promotes the plant growth.
The product is recommended mainly for cereals (sorghum, millets, maize, sugarcane, and
wheat), rice, olive trees, strawberries, vineyard, mustard, cotton, potato and other vegetable
crops, ornamental plants and bushes. Also it is compatible with all fertilizers and many plant
protection products. The solution can be applied by dipping the seeds, tubers, seedlings and
cuttings, by mixing with manure, with soil application and foliarly. Generally it should be applied
prior to transplanting, sowing or after planting. Finally, it can be applied together with herbicides
at the beginning of the cultivation ensuring in the growth of healthy crops.
Advantages and Innovations

Summary
A Greek company has developed a diagnostic method for the analysis of semen and sperm-cell
populations for the investigation of etiological agents of infertility, early pregnancy failure and
recurrent miscarriages due to sperm-originating pathogens. The company seeks collaboration
with sperm banks, fertility clinics or health companies for services agreement.
Pharmaceutical/health companies interested in the commercial exploitation of the offered
technique under license agreement or commercial agreement with technical assistance are also
sought.
Details
Description
Intracellular infections and the presence of pathogenic microorganisms inside spermatozoa
account for early and recurrent miscarriages, male-factor infertility and early pregnancy failure.
Conventional cultures cannot adequately detect chlamydia or viruses, while other available
methods can neither localize the microorganisms inside the cells nor determine the type of
infected cell. A Greek medical company has developed a highly accurate diagnostic test for the
analysis of semen and sperm-cell populations by immunofluorescence and flow cytometry
techniques that can distinguish and accurately detect intracellular infections within the
spermatozoa of the male partner.
The medical company has been using the new diagnostic test routinely when investigating
infectious-factor-related infertility in parallel with sperm and vaginal fluid cultures. This approach
has impressive results regarding the determination of male-originating couple infertility,
accounting for more successful natural conception or in vitro fertilization (IVF) results.
The test allows easy and safe sample storage as well as national and international transport so
that it is suitable for mail-order testing. It produces results rather quickly as it has a laboratory
turnaround time of only a few hours and it is also quite inexpensive when compared to other
methods. The test can be applied in cases with a clinical history of early pregnancy failure,
biochemical pregnancy, recurrent miscarriages due to sperm-originating pathogens,
oligospermia, asthenospermia or teratospermia, unsuccessful IVF attempts and sub-fertility. It
can also be used for the prevention of congenital infections and their repercussions due to
vertical transmission of pathogens from sperm to fetus.
Since the test can be performed on samples stored and shipped from all around the world the
company can provide fast and accurate diagnostic services to companies allocated anywhere in
the world.
Advantages and Innovations
The test has numerous innovations and advantages of over all existing commercially available
diagnostic methods:
BIOCHEM
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 23
it is the only test that combines the extra or intracellular localization of infection and the
correlation between pathogens and infected cell-types in a low-cost, fast and practical
diagnostic method.
it is highly specific and analytic as it is the only existing commercially available diagnostic
method which allows pathogen identification, determination of type of the infected cells and
intracellular localization of pathogens.
the high sensitivity and specificity of the method is ensured through the use of negative
controls and high affinity monoclonal antibodies, large number of events per sample and
retrospective retesting of samples.
it allows easy and safe sample storage and transport both nationally or internationally and
can be used for mail-order testing.
it is very fast as it has a laboratory turnaround time of only a few hours and very
inexpensive compared to other methods such as PCR-based tests, comparable only to the
cheapest of the traditional methods of microorganism detection.

Summary
A Greek company has developed a flow cytometry method for the fast and accurate diagnosis of
mycobacterium tuberculosis (Μtb) infection in humans or animals. The test can be performed on
fixed samples that can be stored at 4ο C for an extensive period of time, a feature that makes
international shipping feasible. The company is seeking for technical cooperation agreement
with laboratories, health clinics and/or hospitals for the conduction of large scale clinical trials
on humans and animals.
Details
Description
The diagnostic methods currently used for tuberculosis (Μtb) are lacking the requisite sensitivity
to rule out disease with a high degree of accuracy, whereas conventional microbiology tests (i.e.
the direct smear and culture test) lack sensitivity for the diagnosis of Mtb. Although nucleic acid
amplification tests provide a reliable way of increasing the specificity of diagnosis (ruling in
disease), their sensitivity for ruling out disease is too low. Therefore, they cannot be used
reliably, especially in cases where clinical diagnosis is questionable or when clinical intervention
is of high priority. Due to the disadvantages of the current diagnostics, a therapeutic trial for Mtb
is currently being used as a diagnostic criterion in clinical practice, especially in critically ill
patients, which has resulted in unnecessary and lengthy treatments with increased costs and
serious side effects that could even be life threatening. Furthermore, in animals and especially in
cattle, late diagnosis of Mtb causes significant economical losses.
The Greek medical company has managed to develop a method for successfully diagnosing
patients infected with Μtb. The method, covered by a patent, is capable of detecting a certain
protein in the host cells of patients infected with Mtb thus enabling its accurate diagnosis. In
order to test the efficiency of this new technique, the company is currently interested to conduct
clinical trials in humans and animals.
Advantages and Innovations
The technique provides a direct, sensitive and highly accurate method for Mtb detection.
Compared to the already available techniques, it can be applied to any accrued biological fluid
or tissue, it is less time consuming and more cost effective. The main advantage of the
technique is that it can be applied on fixed samples allowing for easy international shipping of
the samples to the laboratories performing the test.

Summary
A Greek company active in the power generation sector has developed a highly innovative and
efficient solution for micro heat and power generation (CHP), using hydrogen and proton
exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. An important novelty of the system is its ability to use
alternative fuels like propane/LPG, natural gas or biogas. The company is seeking partnering
enterprises in the field of energy production who will undertake the commercialisation of the
product through a financial, manufacturing or joint-venture agreement.
Details
Description
The Greek company develops and markets hydrogen production systems, primarily from
renewable sources, either for industrial use or integrated with fuel cells for Combined Heat and
Power (CHP) production.
The offered technology is an innovative heat and power production unit based on hydrogen and
fuel cell technology, developed by the company. The product is multi-fuel, i.e. it can operate
with three gaseous fuels, such as natural gas, propane/ liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and
biogas. The technology is designed for dual operation, to function either as a stand-alone power
system delivering up to 5 kW of electrical power or as a CHP system delivering additionally up to
7 kW as thermal energy. The system can be used either for stationary applications (e.g.
telecommunication stations, households and other building) or for mobile applications (boats and
trucks for auxiliary power). The system uses a low-temperature proton exchange membrane fuel
cell.
The company's goal is the commercialization of the system during the next 2-3 years. Currently,
the system is in a pre-commercial stage and can be considered as advanced prototype
demonstrative unit. Such units have been installed and are in operation in various parts of the
world.
Advantages and Innovations
A Greek company has developed a highly innovative and efficient solution for micro heat and
power generation, using hydrogen and PEM fuel cells. The product is based on new and novel
processes and technologies which have been developed in recent years by the company and
have not been commercialized yet. An important novelty of the system is its ability to use
alternative fuels like propane/ liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas or biogas.
The product targets decentralized power production, where numerous applications have been
identified. The sectors that are mainly focused on are the followings: telecommunications,
transportation (trucks and RVs), marine (boats and yachts), households, hospitals, etc.
ENERGY
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 31
Main advantages of the system over the products which currently dominate the market, i.e.
internal and external combustion engines (ICE and ECE), include:
higher electrical and overall efficiency (35% and 85% respectively, versus less than 20% and
70%)
significantly lower maintenance costs
dramatically reduced emissions (no SOx , very low NOx, much lower CO2)
very low noise level
Currently, the market of remote or back-up power generation is served by diesel or gasoline
generators which rely on mature and relatively low cost technology. However, current gen-sets
offer about half of the electrical efficiency of the developed system and possess important
drawbacks such as: high maintenance cost, large amounts of pollutants emissions, vibration and
noise. Operational cost of the developed system (with LPG as feeding fuel) is more than 2 times
lower than that of a conventional diesel generator, while the latter emits three times more CO2,
170 times more NOx and hydrocarbons. Furthermore, while diesel generators emit large
quantities of SOx and particulates (0.17 and 0.4 g/kWh, respectively), the proposed technology
does not emit any measurable quantities of these pollutants.

A Greek Technical University has developed an innovative, integrated data collection and in situ
processing system with adaptive/high frequency sampling capabilities for river monitoring. The
system is based on a system of high quality sensors connected through a wireless network
allowing in situ data processing and modeling of integrated river monitoring. Technical
cooperation agreement with European municipalities and regional authorities (where rivers
exists in their territories) are sought in order to test and apply the system.
Details
Description
The hydrological and geochemical processes that take place in the Mediterranean region occur
at varying special and temporal scales. Temporary river hydrographs are flashy and exhibit
characteristic response times ranging from a few minutes to hours during storm and flash
events. When high rainfall intensities fall upon crusted soils after long periods of time without
precipitation, first flash flood occur which transfer large amounts of sediments and pollutants.
The transfer of these materials are short, it takes place under adverse weather conditions and
doesn’t allow the measurement, control and mitigation of such phenomena.
The Greek Technical University has developed an innovative, integrated data collection and in
situ processing system with adaptive/high frequency sampling capabilities for integrated river
monitoring.
The system is based on three sub sections:
a) The system of sensors which include optical (non intrusive) sensors for quality analysis,
chemical and sediment content as well as river flow velocity. The velocity is measured by
a camera and the sediment flow by an innovative sediment trap. The sensors are
connected through a wireless network, and of video processing subsystem (camera).
b) In-situ data processing software: The system is able to process data in situ maintaining
high levels of energy autonomy and efficiency.
c) Modeling: Using high accuracy models along with the field measurements, the system is
able to predict and visualize the flow of sediments in rivers.
Advantages and Innovations
The innovative aspect of the system is the design of integrated autonomous mechanism
(adaptive/high frequency based) which incorporates innovative new generation sensors (optical-
non intrusive sensors) for monitoring hydrological parameters along with the capability of in-situ
processing of collected data and therefore allowing real time monitoring of rivers. The
deployment of optical sensors allows for accurate estimation of river flow velocity and moreover

Description
Nowadays, water pollution is globally on the rise despite focal improvements in some regions.
Established problems like microbial contamination of potable waters or enhancement of
eutrophication are further exacerbated due to increasing wastewater effluents associated with
an increasing population over the next three decades, continuation of untreated discharge in
rivers, lakes, and coastal areas in developing countries and reallocation of industries from high-
income countries to emerging-market economies. At the same time, potable water is markedly
decreased making reclamation and reuse of wastewater a necessity. Quality of water and
wastewater samples may be quantified via different kinds of analyses: physicochemical
analyses which determine various physical properties of the water sample including color and
odor, electrical conductivity, pH, temperature, total suspended solids, and others; chemical
analyses which detect and quantify a number of possible pollutants found in the water sample
via analytical techniques; microbiological analyses which define and quantify groups of micro-
organisms, characteristic of existence of hazard for public health; and finally, ecotoxicological
analyses utilizing standardized protocols on living organisms of various trophic levels. These
analyses observe and quantify the toxicity on the examined species, which is related to the
pollution burden of the water sample.
The University has long tradition in offering full repertoire of physicochemical analyses for water
and wastewater (TOC, turbidity, conductivity, COD, BOD), microbiological analyses for water,
wastewater and solid samples (E.coli and total coliforms) and ecotoxicological analyses via
invertebrates, algae, plants and bacteria (fresh and saltwater) and/or via terrestrial plants
germination analysis. These tests may also be run on leachates of solid waste samples if
necessary. Statistical evaluation of results (when a number of experimental groups are
involved) is also included.

Description
Nowadays, modern way of living has lead to increased amounts of waste produced. As a general
rule, increase in GDP leads to environmental deterioration up to a certain economic point, not
always predefined. Therefore, it is vital that the decoupling between economic growth and
waste generation is efficiently achieved early in the economic growth curve. Increases in the
amount and the hazardous profile of waste are to blame for a number of environmental
degradation cases. The problem becomes more prominent when focusing on non-household
deriving waste (side-products from municipal, industrial, manufacturing and other facilities)
since these streams are usually full of harmful, toxic, and non readily-biodegradable materials.
But even non-toxic biodegradable residues, such as these resulting from plant/crop
management, they often end in land fields.
The University offers vermicomposting as cost-effective, environmental friendly stabilization
solutions for this kind of waste including agrosector and agroprocessing waste, farming animals'
waste and sludge-deriving waste. By doing so, the unwanted waste is stabilized and it is no
longer a nuisance and a financial liability for the waste generator. A number of already applied
projects under contract verify the ability of vermicomposting to effectively stabilize and neuter a
large variety of organic-based wastes. Furthermore, depending on the initial substrates used,
the stabilized product created by the laboratory may act as a solid or liquid high quality organic
fertilizer, a plant growth booster (after modifications) or a biological control agent (after
modifications). The "classic" product already produced in the laboratory scores high in fertilizing
abilities and in plant-growth promoting capacities and it is readily available for agricultural
endeavours and large scale experiments. Finally, the University is currently engaged in basic
and applied research regarding improvements of targeted characteristics of the stabilized
products, which will ultimately be tailor-made.

Description
A Greek company dealing with LED lighting products and installations has developed a bio
photoreactor for the acceleration of the reaction/growth rate of activated sludge, multiplying the
standard efficiency of common devices. Photobioreactors make use of light to cultivate
microorganisms (algae) producing biomass. They are used in systems for sustainable energy
production and wastewater treatment. In activated sludge reactors, a mixture of microorganisms
are used to convert soluble organic and inorganic pollutants into energy and insoluble bio mass,
which can easily be separated. The mixture of those microorganisms, in the reactors, is like a
"black" box. Until now, after the installation of the system, only few things can be done to
change the balance of the microorganisms. The demand of microorganisms for oxygen is
covered by the aerization of the wastewater reactor.
The photobioreactor developed by the Greek company is an innovative device which uses
artificial (LED) or sun light and temperature so as to stimulate the microalgae production in
wastewater engineering and increase the total procedure output. It can optimize the selection of
microorganisms in the reactor by regulating temperature and light. The use of LED light has
shown a significant impact in nitrification - gentrification process in the content of bioreactors, as
it increases nitrogen removal and low content of nitrates in the sewage. The heat from the sun
can increase the temperature of the reactors content: an increase of 10o C in temperature, can
double the reactors kinetics. The increase of the microalgae in the culture produces oxygen as a
byproduct, which is ready to be use and in a large diffused - effective ratio by other aerobic
microorganisms. The design of the reactor is focused on simplicity, energy saving and has
corrosive resistance chararacteristics. An extra advantage is that it can be added in an already
existing reactor optimizing the output of the existing facilities without the need of: a) additional
space, b) big constructions projects or new tanks, c) dead functional time of the facilities or long
lasting, start up problems. The device can be delivered in a ready for installation form.

Current and Potential Domain of Application
Optimize microorganisms' cultivation for maximum efficiency in wastewater plants. Especially in
"special" applications such as treatment of wastewaters deriving from biogas production
facilities, where the nitrification - gentrification is the decisive area of treatment.
Advantages and Innovations
The device uses light and temperature as two separate parameters for the tuning of the
microorganism cultivation for optimized function in wastewater facilities.
It uses both sun light and LED light for microalgae. In this way, the total energy demand of
the device is minimum and its design gives flexibility in use.
It uses sun light heat to increase wastewaters' temperature. That is the second parameter,
which increases the overall yield in parallel with the use of light.
Energy saving function with the potentiality to regulate the conditions of light, heat and time
in order to tune the process.
Simple, with minimum moving parts.
Corrosive resistant structure.
It can increase the capacity of the facilities without the need of large additional space,
without big construction projects, without dead time in the operation of the plant. In a
compact device set ready for installation.
It can probably handle special wastewater, like those that derives from biogas production
tanks with manure digestion.

Description
A Greek company active in the field of scientific instruments has developed a technology which
can be used for the production of more efficient and inexpensive weight lifting exercise
machines. In general, the training machines incorporating elastic bands or springs generate
force which changes during the execution of exercises proportionally to the elongation of these
springs or elastic bands. This phenomenon occurs due to the Hooke's law according to which the
force needed to extend or compress a spring by some distance is proportional to that distance.
Usually the constant resistance used in the most muscular empowerment exercise machines can
only be achieved using weight lifting machines. However weights may cause several difficulties
as they occupy a lot of space and they are transported difficulty because they are heavy and
bulky.
The main advantage of the technology offered is that it may provide constant resistance using
springs for the execution of muscular empowerment exercises and achieve better results. The
resistance can be easily adjusted so as to have the same impact with stacks which weight
between 1kg and 200kg. The technology provided may be either used for the construction of a
standalone machine or as part of a bigger assembly with a very low cost. The machine can be
fixed, to the floor, the ceiling or other positions depending on the needs of the athlete. The
approximate dimensions of the construction are 10cm X 15cm X 15cm and its weight is 2kg.
Moreover, it can be easily transported inside the bags of athletes or coaches or placed inside a
gym or a house.
Advantages and Innovations
It may be used either as standalone machine or part of a bigger assembly
It is small and light so it can be easily transferred (10cm X 15cm X 15cm - 2kg)
There is no need for electrical power supply or batteries in order to function

designed and developed to monitor real-time all the critical operation parameters of a vessel
uninterruptedly. The company seeks partners that design electronics, especially monitoring
systems for vessels and/or research organizations that design prototypes. They are looking for
partners from electronics manufacturing for commercial cooperation with technical assistance.
Collaboration on technical issues related to the optimization of the production is provided.
Details
Description
A Greek company established in 1991, deals with the production of electronics. It provides
technology-based solutions for businesses and organizations. It designs, develops and
manufactures a wide array of integrated IT solutions, smart-grid and wireless-based systems
and integrated electronic components.
In the last seven years one of the company’s basic research activities is in the field of wireless
sensor networks. For more than three years, the company has developed a hardware and
software platform to support applications based on smart wireless sensors. The new platform is
an innovative patented platform that enables remote monitoring and analysis of vessels
operational parameters. It is a powerful tool that collects and transmits real-time data from any
type of vessel imminently to the administration headquarters’ through a smart-sensors wireless
network, providing complete diagnosis and early warnings (e.g. condition of the ship’s engines).
The company’s solution assists maritime companies to achieve higher efficiency in operation,
better environmental protection and compliance, dynamic predictive maintenance and effective
coordination between crew and administration. It minimizes risk, time and cost and maximizes
the benefits of the transition to condition based maintenance and green shipping. Condition-
based maintenance (CBM), shortly described, is maintenance when need arises. This
maintenance is performed after one or more indicators show that equipment is going to fail or
that equipment performance is deteriorating. Condition-based maintenance was introduced to
try to maintain the correct equipment at the right time. The aim is to monitor the structural
behavior of ships during the operation at sea. The introduction of wireless sensors into the
architectural designs reduces the cost and installation complexity of hull monitoring systems.
Condition-based maintenance is based on using real-time data to prioritize and optimize
maintenance resources. Observing the state of the system is known as condition monitoring.
Such a system determines the equipment's health and act only when maintenance is actually
necessary.
The new platform consists of a network of wireless collectors, connected to both analog and
digital sensors/devices tasked to watch over conditions in any area of a vessel. Data are
processed into valuable information that is transmitted through a mesh technology low
consumption wireless network to the ship server and to the company’s headquarters through a

satellite link. Intelligent algorithms analyze continuously all data collected and present to fleet-
managers in the headquarters on any terminal device, reports in order to detect abnormal
situations (suspicious-out of limits measurements etc) and maintenance issues as well as early
warnings suggesting proper actions or measures to be taken.
The basic aim was to develop systems with smart sensors for specific applications. The new
platform is used in a number of European technical institutes and universities. The company is
looking for commercial cooperation with technical assistance to share its know-how.
Advantages and Innovations
The company has been involved in research projects, national and European. The new system
has the following advantages and innovations:
1. The platform can be installed easily, fast and with much lower cost than wired solutions
due to fact that it uses wireless network technology.
2. The new installation does not require any changes in vessel’s equipment and this
reduces even more the installation cost and time compared to competition. The
monitoring solution is:
a. compatible with all types of sensors/devices
b. redundant to the existing monitoring systems
c. deployed in all parts of the vessel
d. one solution for all types of vessels
e. one platform for different types of measurements
3. It uses a mesh topology wireless network to communicate data thus even in the case of
a node’s malfunction data are sent by another one so data sent are of high integrity and
human error is avoided.
4. Low energy solution (autonomous wireless devices)
5. Fully customized remote monitoring data analysis: It provides a fully customized analysis
of all data selected.
6. Every part of the solution (both hardware and software) is totally developed by the
company. This makes support more flexible and always on time.
7. Proven reduced fuel consumption, repair time and maintenance cost.

Summary
A Greek company deals with IT solutions and has extensive experience with Artificial Intelligence
(AI). The company uses an advanced platform to transform heterogenous Big Data information
into knowledge and decision taking. The company is looking either for end-users or business
partners for providing the platform to solve difficult problems related to data analytics. Services
and distribution agreements foreseen. A technological partner in order to develop Cloud
environment for existing applications is also sought.
Details
Description
Today, there is a huge amount of available data, usually described as Big Data. This data is in
many cases useless since it is very hard to be analyzed. The problem is how to correlate the
available data with the desired solution of a given complex question. The Greek company
presents an intelligent system platform that transforms heterogeneous information into
knowledge and therefore a solution is feasible.
The platform includes an intelligent solutions generator. The platform has the ability to be
adapted to different issues and complex business or technical environments due to its
conceptual framework and the usage of machine learning methods and algorithms, subfield of
artificial intelligence. Machine learning involves adaptive mechanisms that enable the platform to
learn from experience, learn by example and learn by analogy. Learning capabilities can improve
the performance of an intelligent system over time.
There are two learning methods and both are used in the platform:
Supervised or active learning: learning with an external ‘teacher’ who presents training set to
the network and used for classification and prediction.
Unsupervised, self-organized learning: this method does not require an external teacher,
tends to follow the neuro-biological organization of the brain, and creates groups of similar
inputs (clustering), density estimates or projections of high-dimensional data that can be
visualized effectively. Unsupervised learning can be an objective by itself (discovering hidden
patterns in data) or a means towards an end.
The platform also includes visualization in human level. Knowledge visualization, in accordance
to human abilities, is the most important step in data modeling. Decision makers have to do
more than just optimize their daily work, work that is constantly changing due to market
dynamic. Being able to recognize first the changes and to react promptly and correctly is most
decisive for their businesses.
The platform allows easy, immediate and substantive assessment of corporate knowledge
through visualization offered by and at all levels. The platform uses data (when available) such
INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 59
as the overall image of the company, the characteristics of a particular group of people or
procedures and focus on a specific person or procedure.
Another feature used by the platform is the Knowledge Engineering. In short, from federation of
systems the aim is to create an enterprise ecosystem. Today an enterprise is evolving into a
complex economic, social and business environment, co-existing with suppliers, producers,
competitors, other stakeholders and customers. Global trends of production and distribution in
one hand, business dependence on technology evolution on the other (Internet of things, Cloud
and Smart Systems) are leading into an era where people, machines, devices, sensors, and
businesses must all be connected and be able to interact with each another.
Another important topic of the platform is the Business Intelligence aligned to the enterprise
ecosystem knowledge. Business Intelligence as entity that process information, transforms
information into knowledge, must be in the center of business and technology unified conceptual
and operational processes.
The Greek company is working on this since 1999 and now is being able to offer a Business
Intelligence strategy and implementation, part of business engineering and the creation of
applications offering to users that have not necessarily a statistical background to assess and
understand the identified patterns.
The platform is encompassing modules that perform tasks such as clustering, clustering history,
association rules, classification and prediction, text-mining etc. The platform represents a unique
and integrated tool for processing and analyzing any kind of information, producing usable
knowledge and great value out of data.
Advantages and Innovations
The platform is accumulating 20 years of experience in creating tailor made solutions for sectors
such as financial, industrial, retail, etc. The platform provides the enterprise with the ability to:
extract knowledge directly from data and present it, either as logical expressions, like rules
and correlations, as well as visual representations
resolve complicated tasks with a high level of confidence and can work on data sets with
missing or erroneous values
overcome problems that common statistical tools cannot
handle qualitative and quantitative data simultaneously
analyze discrete and continuous variables
even though the platform learns from data, it can also embed existing knowledge acquired
from the business environment
Usage that requires neither statistical nor programming knowledge

companies in countries or regions with the necessary training and knowledge transfer.
This collaboration will fall under distribution services agreement.

BIM software complies with the requirements of international and European standards. Electrical
Design complies with IEC 60364, BS 7671, HD 384 while Heating Design complies with DIN
4701, ΕΝ 1264, ISO 13384, EN 12831.
Advantages and Innovations
The company is a leading software provider regarding MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) &
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air conditioning) in Greece with a remarkable share of the Greek
market in its segment. The electrical design software has been used for almost all major
electrical projects in Greece.
A unique advantage of the BIM software is the integration between many tools - simulation and
calculations tools, 2D and 3D visualization, drawings, reports, libraries and documentation
integrated within the same application. Moreover the user interface is common in all
applications. Not only have that, the building data are available throughout, i.e. the building
model only needed to be designed once.
The BIM software provides significant time savings, cost savings, learning curve and language
packs. In short:
Every new project has default values (where possible) for its most important parameters.
These values have been carefully selected and significantly speed up the modeling of
electrical and heating systems.
Frequent references to the standards textbooks can be distracting and interrupt your
workflow. Important information, formulas and excerpts from the standards are included in
the help.
Ensure that building design satisfies regulations without over sizing equipment. Prevent
numerous changes later once the build is in progress. Ability to take off material volumes
and amounts means less overspend – which in turn leads to less waste on unnecessary
materials being ordered and not wanted/used.
The simple structure and the video tutorials ensure easy familiarisation and a fast learning
curve. The user can work productively with the software within a few minutes.

The Greek company was established in 2009 and is specializing in Information & Communication
technologies (ICT). It provides highly demanded solutions and business services covering a
number of activities, in the fields of Long range Communications (WiMAX, LTE, standards for
wireless communications), Short range Communications (WSN – Wireless Sensor Network, M2M
– Machine to Machine, IoT – Internet of Things) and Future Internet.
The company is one of the leading manufacturers of IoT systems in Greece. Company's goal is
to provide an ecosystem that can integrate all Smart City applications in one platform (lighting,
waste management, information boards, proximity & parking sensors, irrigation systems etc). As
a result, the Greek company provides the core backbone for a Smart City infrastructure based
on a complete outdoor smart lighting solution.
Company’s solutions are designed in order to merge the conventional M2M world with the
emerging IoT world using standards-based approach with strong focus on industrial and semi-
industrial applications. These solutions address system/solution integrators and OEMs (Original
Equipment Manufacturer). Particularly an integrator gets all necessary wireless communication
modules and modular software components that enable him to interconnect and manage any
type of sensor/actuator, increasing his client’s productivity. In other words any OEM can make
his products smart through appropriately attached controlling hardware.
The solution converts a lamp post into a smart one, enabling both the remote control of its
luminous flux and the reception of real-time alerts in case of any fault (example: a broken
lamp). The system is compatible with conventional or LED lights, fixed or dimmable. The system
is intended for outdoor lighting in public or private road lighting, architectural lighting,
projectors, security lights, large installations in ports, factories, warehouses etc
The system is continuously monitoring the lighting conditions of the environment and adjusts
the intensity of light accordingly. The communication between the lamp posts is performed
wirelessly using Mesh Network Technology (A mesh network is a network topology in which each

node relays data for the network. All mesh nodes cooperate in the distribution of data in the
network).
The system is monitored and controlled through dedicated software (cloud based), also
provided. It is possible to control each lamp according to user needs. Automation rules can be
applied, to support the dimming feature of the lights. It is also possible to group lamp posts
forming sectors dynamically. The system is able to detect motion and automatically provides
more intensity of light where and when needed. For safety reasons, lights are dimmed
constantly in low level. The solution is also FIWARE (a middleware platform, driven by the
European Union, for the development and global deployment of applications for Future Internet)
enabled making possible the smooth integration into already operating Smart Cities under this
framework.
Advantages and Innovations
Company’s solutions were fundamentally designed to serve any application, from low power
smart agriculture use cases to thousands of densely deployed smart lighting fixtures. In
particular the Greek company envisage an IoT wireless metropolitan network with countless
“things” communicating through the same dedicated infrastructure, including but not limited to
Smart Lighting, parking space terminals, smart waste management, municipal info – points etc.
Moreover the smart lighting solution creates great economy and better lighting conditions while
has limitless scalability thanks to its architecture and technology used. It supports the
integration of various Smart City applications on the same platform. It is a complete system that
turns a conventional light post into a smart one. The system is ideal for various outdoor
applications, automated and adaptable.

Summary
A Greek IT start-up presents a free to use service that allows the social geo-tracking without
the need for GPS, data-plan or Wi-Fi. The service allows geo-tracking services within the range
of a cellular network, with more autonomy to the user. The company is open for various types
of collaboration with various potential partners but mainly with Mobile Network Operators under
license agreement. Other types include joint venture and technical collaboration with IT
companies or investors.
Details
Description
Social geo-tracking has hundreds of millions of users globally, and is widely used in numerous
applications and social networks. All similar applications rely on GPS or Wi-Fi or a data-plan
(packets of internet data transmitted by the cellular network) to operate. There is a
disadvantage though; Smartphone GPS/Wi-Fi drains a phone's battery within just a few hours of
operation. Furthermore, simple cell phones, without advanced GPS or data abilities, still account
for 50% of global telecom space. The Greek start-up introduces a free to use service that
consists of special software installed inside the Mobile Network Operator's (MNO) data-center.
The platform assigns the social geo-tracking function of the phone's inbuilt hardware to a
background service running inside MNO servers. This service is relying on cell tower signal-
strength analysis to geo-locate the user.
The service requires no extra battery energy consumption from the phone - and increases
significantly its stand-by time in geo-tracking mode, stretching it almost equally to the length of
time that the battery can power the phone in idle stand-by mode. Accuracy is approximately
within a 150m range in urban zone. The attributes of this technology allow it to work more
consistently than GPS inside buildings. This inherent feature enables the service to work quite
adequately for social geo-tracking applications.
The Greek company can link the geo-tracking software to social networks (i.e. Facebook) via
any SIM, native or roaming, even newly designed e-SIMs. It is able to deliver a new social
experience, including the presentation of mapped renderings of the user's location in real-time,
announcing the position of the user to selected social peers in the social network. The user has
the option to select for how long, and in which precision, he would like to present his position.
For example, international tourists exposing their geo-tracks to selected people of their social
network or other peers (family, colleagues, friends etc). The same platform allows one to
update the social media text status without access to data from the cellular network or Wi-Fi,
frequently a scarce commodity on-the-go, or allows the user to broadcast geo-located SOS
alerts to authorities, to make a trip or an excursion safer.
The geo-tracking application is offered for free to the users and the MNO can enable other
applications to hook onto, under a subscriber based closed-group service not linked to the social
INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 69
network. Also companies with geo-tracking needs can use the service. For example, a large
company could monitor the geo-location of its travelling salesmen in real time, even if the GPS
or data feed from their phones is deactivated.
Another example, of a special group, is parental supervision - the case of children and minors
using cell phones where the parents can monitor the location of their children in real time with a
tracking system that cannot by-passed. All those business cases respond to the need for an
ultra-cheap, long stretch personal geo-tracker, under a secure web interface, that can operate
without relying on GPS, Wi-fi or Data-plan use. Depending on the collaborating partner, several
different types of collaboration can be offered, ranging from license to joint-venture
agreements.
As an early adoption target, the platform is compatible with the sale of around 250 million
visitors SIM cards per year, which mainly tourists buy when visiting a country, use them for a
few days to avoid roaming charges, and then dispose it. The service can scale globally in this
way. Of course native mobile users can use the service to assist their social interactions as well.
The geo-tracker via SIM is compatible with older technology phones, smart phones, tablets and
smart-watches. Revenues come from advertising on social media pushed along the service
delivery and revenue derived from statistical analysis of social network interaction data.
Advantages and Innovations
The main competition of the platform involves smart phone tracker applications that rely on
GPS or Wi-Fi and thus can only work for a few hours. Another competitor is the GPRS geo-
trackers at the 150-300 $ range. The service of the Greek company can come as a free service
by the cellular network.
The service is operating as long as the battery of the phone operates and with adequate
accuracy. It can be used alternatively for emitting distress signals. It can work as long as the
user wishes and on any device uses a simple SIM card. The service can bring significant
advantages for the telecom operators. The benefits to telecoms operators (MNO) include a new
monetization channel based on cell-tower signal strength analysis. This can help launch a new
advertising channel and also create a new market for the meta-data generated. Benefits can
also come to social network operators, through a share of the advertising revenue.

the area of supply chain automation for pharmaceutical and cosmetics orders. The company's
solution package incorporates optimization algorithms, barcode technologies, as well as radio
frequency wireless communications, microelectronics and software engineering into a single
efficient and integrated system. The company's new integration system is composed of small
tags with an indicator light, an illuminated digital display as well as control keys for the picker.
These tags communicate in real-time with the company's information system. When an order is
forwarded for picking, the tags are activated and these tags installed at the picking locations
light up, indicating the quantities that must be picked for each stock keeping unit in the order.
When the current order identity appears on the order display tag, the picker sees the lights at
the picking locations as well as the quantity to be picked from each stock keeping unit. A
confirmation button at each location has to be pressed by the picker. The tag turns off at each
picking location where collection has been completed and an audible buzz informs the operator
that the order is complete. For a large number of fast-moving stock keeping units, the picking
area is divided into sectors. The company's new picking automation solution maximises the flow

Details
Description
The Greek company presents an energy monitoring & control platform. This is a result of the
wide expertise of the experts who established the company, in the fields of energy, embedded
systems and communications. The platform features wireless, easy to install and revolutionary
small energy sub-meters & controllers, with an open standards interface to the cloud with a low
Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). This way, the company leads to significant energy efficiencies
and create an inflection point in the energy efficiency and smart home industry.
The circuit-level DIN (the German Institute for Standardization) rail form-factor meters (also
called sub-meters) are so small that fit almost everywhere. This allows to an innovative
approach which enables a larger number of metering points able to drive much more detailed
insight into energy efficiency opportunities. Due to their optimal cost efficient design, they have
a low TCO despite the adoption of a larger number of metering points.
Mesh network connectivity permits effective positioning of meters in any location of a building.
Integrated with a network gateway product designed by the Greek company, data can be
aggregated for analysis and insight generation in the proprietary cloud-based analytics service.
Alternatively, thanks to the open, pluggable data architecture, customers can choose to route
their meter data to other data collection and analysis services. The high metering accuracy
consistent with the definitions of IEEE 1459 and ANSI C12.1 (international standards for
metering) and advanced meter points (current, voltage, frequency, active and reactive
power/energy) combined with the internal data logger and scheduler give the best value for
money. The highly integrated low power design implemented in a sophisticated embedded
system design enables a low BoM (Bill of Materials) / high performance design allowing for
monitoring samples down to 1 second.
The wireless interface ΙΕΕΕ 802.15.4 (ΖigΒee) simplifies the installation effort and minimizes
costs. The low cost allows the technology to be widely deployed in wireless control and
monitoring applications. Low power usage allows longer life with smaller batteries. Mesh
networking provides high reliability and more extensive range. The ZigBee network layer
natively supports both star and tree typical networks, and generic mesh networks.
The proprietary energy analytics platform offers a robust, secure and expandable tool for
operational energy data management. The platform is capable of receiving and exporting multi-

structured data sets and then sensibly represents this data over a web browser. The company
utilizes Microsoft Azure to ensure maximum reliability and availability of service. The platform is
fast, dynamic and secure. Users can manually upload their energy data keeping the same
analysis capabilities. An iOS (operational system used by Apple company) application enables
mobile users to access it from anywhere.
By using the platform, companies and buildings get real-time, meaningful information about
the consumption and generation of electrical energy and sensor data. The information is
analyzed per appliance, line, electric phase, site or geographic area. Data can easily be exported
for off-line processing in Excel or Business Intelligence systems. Highlights:
1. Real time monitoring of consumption/generation/sensor data per location, phase, line
and appliance
2. Comparison and aggregation of time series data across metrics, devices, phases, and
locations.
3. Customisable notifications and alarms by SMS or email when thresholds are exceeded.
4. Advanced “intelligent” reporting with regression modeling, auditing, data heat maps,
load profiling, model baselines and PV net metering among others.
Advantages and Innovations
The main innovation of the platform is that it allows the installation of many little sub-meters to
the building. In this configuration, the total control of the building is feasible and effective.
Additionally the system provides:
1. Miniaturized, powerful, embedded software electronics technology
2. IoT, ZigBee based Wireless communication
3. Designed for energy efficiency not just for metering
4. Low total cost of ownership
5. Unique massive roll out and cloud upload design with hardware agnostic data
aggregation service
6. Plug ‘n play design, dramatically reducing OPEX (Operational Expenditure)
7. End to end solution, including cloud and mobile apps, but also open to other cloud
services
8. Rapid prototyping of the software into new form factor hardware.

Summary
A Greek company established by experienced engineers presents a unique connectivity platform
for Internet of Things (IoT). The platform allows the user to use graphs in order to interconnect
existing or new devices and applications easily and effectively. The Greek company is looking
for companies working with IoT networks and applications or companies interested in setting up
an IoT application for commercial agreement with technical assistance. Technical training and
support provision when needed are provided.
Details
Description
The Greek company is an IoT Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provider with a unique connectivity
framework. The company has been established a year ago, yet the engineers who established it
used to work for more than 4 years to another company offering design services for IoT system
solution providers. The founders of the company realized the problems for correct & wide use of
IoT concept because of: long design cycles leading to lack of interoperability, inefficient
methods for interconnecting Things with applications, extremely high effort for the development
of new applications instead of reusing existing ones and wrong interpretation of the IoT concept
by thinking of Things as only tangible entities. The Greek engineers then designed and currently
offer a platform based on the first IoT editor that uses graphs to interconnect models of devices
and existing applications with each other, through ready-made logic. In this way, the platform
leverages the potential of IoT in a wide range of home automation or business processes with
significant cost saving for consumers and enterprises.
Connecting every network device with existing applications is a simple task with the use of the
platform. There is no need to write complex computing code, the platform uses simple graphs to
create and interconnect various Things to the Cloud and from there back to the edge devices.
Things (objects, animals or people provided with unique identifiers and the ability to transfer
data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction)
have owners who decide how to share them as well as the data they generate. The need of new
applications is eliminated since Things exchange data with their owners or other authorized
users over social networks and communication applications that until today have been used only
for human communication purposes.
As an example of the approach of the platform is the use of an existing “dump” IP camera to a
Skype account. The system can specify a trigger, for example the actuation from a motion
sensor and then the user will receive a Skype video call with the camera’s live feed. In the same
way as with the applications, existing platforms and services could be handled and become
useful by the platform.
The platform is made with the concept of IoT fogging in mind. The fogging is a distributed
computing infrastructure in which some application services are handled at the network edge in
a smart device and some application services are handled in a remote data center in the cloud.
The goal of fogging is to improve efficiency and reduce the amount of data that needs to be
transported to the cloud for data processing, analysis and storage. The platform is automatically

assigning tasks implied by the User Network Story (a user story helps to create a simplified
description of a requirement) to a distributed network of edge devices like IoT hubs and end
nodes.
Advantages and Innovations
The platform is the first to use graphs for interconnecting devices, applications and platforms.
The platform can use any existing or new application, device or Thing. With the use of the
platform, the user can increase productivity, connect easily Things with applications and
platforms (such as social networks & commercial communications) previously not exploited. The
approach of the company takes the IoT concept into a new era. The platform offers increased
performance, increased privacy features, socialization of Things, in-house Cloud application
software, Cloud computer vision algorithms and a vast variety of available powerful IoT stories
to work on.

Description
A Greek company active in the field of scientific instruments has developed a patented
instrument with capability to measure the volume of miscellaneous objects with high accuracy
regardless their shape or state of matter in a non-destructive way.
Until now, the measurement of the volume of objects had been feasible only by using
mathematical formulas or physical methods such as the immersion in calibrated tanks containing
liquid. More advanced methods using lasers are also referred in the bibliography.
Nevertheless, these methods have several disadvantages as in the case of using mathematical
formulas it is very difficult measure the volume of objects with unusual shape (such as
sponges). Moreover wetting can destroy the object as well.
The device offered allows the measurement of the volume of bodies regardless of their shape,
consistency and state of matter (solid, liquid, gas) without damaging them. The device is offered
in several sizes and under certain conditions it can either measure the volume of a tank or a
room. Finally the indication of the measurement is displayed through an electronic system.
The technology used is relatively simple and inexpensive whereas according to quality controls
from the Greek institute of metrology its precision is 0.15%. This percentage might be a bit
higher when using the method in order to measure entire rooms.
Advantages and Innovations
The advantages of the device include :
its capability to measure the volume of porous bodies (ex. sponges) without having to
immerse them in liquids as it is needed using the classical methods which might be
destructive.
its capability to measure the volume of large objects (ie tanks) which is difficult to be filed
with liquids so as to measure their volume.

Summary
A Greek company has produced a novel multi-reinforced polymer panel. The panel exhibits
outstanding resistance to axial buckling and to in-plane or out-of-plane shear forces. Its
manufacturing process is simple and the panels are light and low-cost. The company is looking
for research partners to develop the technology further, especially as an application for
automobiles.
Details
Description
The Greek company specialises in material development and multiaxial testing, within the
framework of many international industrial projects and in more than 30 European, competitive,
four year research projects of the EC, the last 25 years. Its latest technology involves the
creation of high-durability, low-cost, low-weight panels especially suited for the automobile
industry.
The new core-panel has been designed and manufactured based on a novel architecture. The
matrix is reinforced with Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and the composite with long fibers in the X &
Y directions. New processing equipment, including a mixer-reactor, has been developed for CNT
reinforcement. It is also efficient for hybrid CNT/graphene reinforcement, which will increase the
core durability and therefore will reduce further the panel cost.
The forming process is generic, suitable for use with polymer matrices of low or high viscosity.
Initially the thermoplastic Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and a lower cost PolyEtherKetone (PEK)
were used. Presently an inexpensive thermoplastic polyurethane is employed. The
manufacturing process is simple and cost-effective.
Advantages and Innovations
The developed panels exhibit:
1. Outstanding resistance to axial buckling and to in-plane or out-of-plane shear forces.
Long fatigue life at high stress level was measured for PEEK/CNTs and PEK/CNTs
matrices. These arise from:
a. Effective CNT reinforcement (>230 % increase) of the matrix, based on new
concept processing equipment (mixer & reactor).
b. Satisfactory liquid powder impregnation, improved further with local differential
movement of the fibers during compression molding.
MATERIALS
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 83
c. Cell-core design based on an optimization technique, where mass-stiffness-
damping are parametrically expressed as a function of the core’s geometry and
material properties.
2. The manufacturing process is simple, continuous, low energy consuming and capable to
produce tailored panels with varying cell geometry, including fastening parts to other
components (panel density < 0,1 gr/cm^3). If the facing sheets are not fiber reinforced,
the panel possesses high formability.
3. The extensive work-hardening behavior of the reinforced PEEK matrix, the high specific
energy absorption of the carbon fibers and mainly the core design (deformable), provide
an outstanding crashworthy capacity. This can be further enhanced by shape morphing
of selected cells when excessive deformation is reached, leading to the instant change of
their dynamic characteristics (self-actuation).
4. The work-hardening behavior (improved with nano-reinforcement), postulates greater
matrix volume to deform.
5. Vibrational energy absorption is enhanced due to the inclination of the cell walls. When
loading is applied shear deformation prevails, which maximizes damping.
6. The proposed hybrid CNT/graphene reinforcement will increase durability (enhanced by
crack tip deflection on graphene). Then, the ratio cost / (fatigue life time) is further
reduced.

Summary
A Greek research group has developed a novel nanomaterial, to be used as contrast agent for
MRI medical diagnosis. The nanomaterial offers superior characteristics, e.g. enhanced image
contrast, high stability and dispensability, low toxicity, low cost of production, while it is
applicable in targeted drug delivery as an agent for image-guided diagnosis and therapy. The
research group seeks partners from the pharmaceutical industry for research cooperation or
license agreement in the fields of magnetically driven hyperthermia and targeted drug delivery.
The research group is part of a large physics & materials research centre in Greece that
performs high quality fundamental and applied scientific research focusing on two main
research directions, i)laser science & photonics and ii)materials & devices science & technology.
Details
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is one of the most powerful medical diagnosis techniques. It
is a non-invasive technique for 3D high-resolution examinations of the healthy or diseased
tissues, internal organs and cells of the human body. The diagnostic power of MRI is highly
dependent on the properties of the contrast agent, which is injected in the human body and
“highlights” the areas under observation.
The proposed nanomaterial based on magnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles is promising as contrast
agent for MRI, because of the improved contrast enhancement of the image that can provide
compared to MRI agents currently used, while it also performs improved magnetic properties. Its
advantageous use can be assisted by MRI, as it can provide real-time observation of drug
accumulation in a selected tissue targeted drug delivery. Preliminary experiments of iron-oxide
nanostructures incubated with living cells, indicated low levels of toxicity, cell-cell interactions
suggest nice tolerance and high viability giving further support towards the potential use of the
proposed technology in MRI-based technologies.
The nanomaterial targets mainly the pharmaceutical industry and can be used not only as a
diagnostic agent for MRI but also as a therapeutic agent for therapeutic aims., Therefore, it
could also be used in magnetically driven hyperthermia and targeted drug delivery. In this way
the same agent would carry the drug to the target, and through MRI it can assist in having a
real-time evaluation of drug absorbency and efficiency.
Advantages and Innovations
Performs stable magnetic properties. The novel nonmaterial has been developed with a novel
synthesis procedure based on a high temperature chemistry pathway, which offers high stability
and uniformity of the end product. The material consists of pure iron-oxide, free from impurities
NANO & MICRO TECHNOLOGIES
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 86
and exhibits homogeneous and narrow size distribution, 10 times better than common MRI
contrast agents.
High contrast efficiency. Commercial iron-oxide nanoparticles demonstrate low
magnetization, which limits the contrast and resolution of the image in MRI. The new
product is characterized by a high saturation magnetization, which means high contrast
efficiency and resolution of the image.
Low toxicity. Preliminary experiments in living cells, indicated low levels of toxicity, cell-cell
interactions, and high viability, supporting the potential use of the proposed technology in
MRI applications.
Cost efficiency. It can be produced easily and at significantly low cost as it needs only one-
step synthesis. It also uses cheaper reactants than gadolinium based contrast agents and
the commercial product Endorem® (iron-oxide based).
Superior contrast agent characteristics. It is water dispersible and stable into aqueous
solution without further functionalization with the advantage of lower hydrodynamic volume
(80 nm) compared to those of Endorem (150-180 nm).
Versatility. It can be used not only as a diagnostic but also as a therapeutic agent.

Summary
A Greek research group of a large research centre has developed a fully portable instrument for
the analysis and characterization of chemical elements in solid materials. The system is based
on laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and is capable to provide rapid multi-elemental
analysis ‘‘In-situ". The research group seeks industrial partners from the mineral or aerospace
sector for technical cooperation agreement in regard of adapting the system to serve special
production needs.
Details
Description
Product control at various stages of production process and the determination of the chemical
composition of raw materials is of significant importance for the contemporary industry. Until
now, the industry is usually forced to maintain chemical labs for quality assurance/control
issues, or cooperate with external labs under a time consuming process that includes the
following steps: The samples are collected from the production line or/and the raw materials (1).
Then, they are transported to the chemical lab for examination (2), where an analysis is
conducted (3) and results are communicated back to the industry (4). Finally, decision making is
taking place at the course of production (5). The conventional process, as described above, is
time consuming resulting in a significant waste of resources and low efficiency at production in a
very competitive international context.
The Greek research centre provides an integrated solution that helps industry to overcome this
problem. It provides a fully portable system that is capable to carry out real time analysis and
characterization of minerals, chemical products and raw materials. Ideally, the system could be
installed in the production line, offering high sensitivity measurements rapidly. More precisely, in
the case of the mineral industry, the system could be used as a critical component of the
production line that either detects a material or measures the chemical composition of the
product, controlling quality at several stages of production, while also determines the separation
of materials in case of quality fault or for serving special industrial quality specifications. By this
way, the novel instrument is capable to increase the efficiency of the extraction process, while in
parallel the competitiveness of the related industry.
The system is based on laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and is capable to detect rapidly
nearly all the elements of the periodic table. It also carries out a large number of measurements
very quickly, with no need of sample preparation or use of chemical consumables.
The main parts of the system include a laser module, a camera, a spectrometer, other
supporting optoelectronics equipment, plus efficient software for analyzing data. The software is
based on algorithms developed in-house.

Description
Cultural heritage study, valorization, preservation and documentation reflect a significant part of
the art and antiques worldwide market. Professional assistance, expertise from various fields
and scientifically supported services are often required, especially in cases of objects of high
artistic or historic value. Fast, non-destructive techniques are often needed for cleaning surfaces
on sensitive objects, such as ancient sculptures and paintings. Despite the need, the market
penetration of techniques for secure and reliable cultural conservation systems is limited. Laser
cleaning is a non-contact technique that allows the controlled and safe removal of unwanted
layers from cultural heritage objects and monuments with high spatial resolution and material
discrimination. It is rapid and does not necessitate particular health/ safety precautions, in
contrast to conventional cleaning techniques that rely only on practitioners, involving dangerous
chemicals and air abrasive methodologies. The Greek research centre has developed a holistic
approach on the conservation and cleaning of cultural heritage objects, including:
a set of transportable cleaning systems of compact size dedicated for field interventions,
sophisticated cleaning set-ups for demanding studies and objects
monitoring and/or evaluation modules based on laser analytical and diagnostic techniques.
The proposed set of specialized laser cleaning systems address various conservation challenges
with proven success in a wide range of application scenarios:
Cleaning of inorganic encrustations from stonework (e.g. soiling, pollution accumulations,
burial crusts)
Elimination of polymeric layers (e.g. aged varnish, unsuccessful consolidation treatments,
over-paintings) from painted surfaces (e.g.icons, easel and wall paintings)
Removal of corrosion layers from metals

Cleaning of various crusts from proteinaceous substrates (e.g.wood, leather, skin,
parchment, feather, bone, ivory, textiles).
The proposed systems are already used in the cultural heritage field for more than a decade and
the Greek research centre has established a long-term services agreement in regard of
conservation services with one of the most famous museums worldwide. Further, the work
carried out has been honored with the 2012 “Keck” award of the international institute for
conservation of historic and artistic works, plus numerous related studies have been published
in scientific journals & conferences.
Advantages and Innovations
The set of laser cleaning systems proposed are part of a holistic approach in regard of cultural
heritage objects conservation, including transportable and more sophisticated lab set ups, plus
an evaluation methodology for the work carried out, including laser analytical and diagnostic
modules synchronized to monitor and evaluate cleaning process at all steps. The systems
capitalize on knowledge and research gained over 20 years of research and study on the field.
As a result, the systems are capable to address a great variety of application scenarios with
success.
The laser based techniques employed are reliable and non-destructive, since they can address
to any artwork, independently of its surface texture, shape, or size, without threatening the
chemical, structural and mechanical state of it. In regard of technical characteristics and
advantages of the systems provided, the emitted wavelengths span in the range of 193 - 2940

Summary
A Greek research group of a large research centre has developed and composed a novel
photocatalytic nanomaterial in powder form. The material is activated simply by ultraviolet
radiation and visible light, and is capable to clean, polluted indoor and outdoor air in work-
places, schools, hospitals, private houses and living environments. The research group is
seeking paint/coatings manufacturers for license or commercial agreement with technical
assistance in order to support the synthetic process and the production of the novel material.
The Greek research group is part of a large physics & materials research centre that performs
high quality fundamental and applied scientific research.
Details
Description
Based on recent studies, polluted air is the cause of up to 500,000 premature deaths every year
in the European Union countries. Taking on account that in-door environment is approximately
12 times more polluted than out-door environment, in combination with the fact that people
spend approximately 80% of their time in-doors, it is obvious that the problem is really urgent
and new air purification methods are a global request.
The Greek research group has developed a novel nanomaterial in powder form, which is used as
an agent to accelerate air cleaning and purifying processes based on photocatalysis.
Photocatalysis is a safe and inexpensive way to retain indoor and outdoor living environments
clean, thus improving the quality of life. The photocatalytic material produced is eco-friendly and
consists of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles in powder form doped with transition metals.
The photocatalytic material employs a novel procedure of photocatalysis, which can be activated
both by ultraviolet radiation and visible light (direct or diffused). However, the existing products
in the market operate using only ultraviolet radiation. The activation by natural or artificial light
means that the use of harmful ultraviolet radiation can be avoided.
Upon activation, the photocatalytic nano-material generates very reactive molecules (i.e.
powerful agents like oxidizing hydroxyl molecules-OH) which are able to break down harmful
pollutants (organic and inorganic) into absolutely harmless end-product compounds, such as
carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O).
Polluted outdoor and indoor surfaces often accumulate bacteria or gases of volatile organic
compounds. Volatile organic compounds include noxious compounds such as formaldehyde,
toluene and many other common contaminates released by building materials and household
cleaners generally found in the home. The novel material allows degradation of them without
dangerous by-products. It also degrades inorganic pollutants without generating dangerous by-
products and bacteria, e.g. e-coli, klebsiella pneuminiae and phages.
The technology has been patented in the EU (PCT/EP2010/070872) and was shortlisted as one
of the top 10 innovations in the Greek “1nd Competition of Applied Research and Innovation” in
NANO & MICRO TECHNOLOGIES
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 92
2012. Furthermore the material has been used in semi industrial scale by the research group to
coat the interior surface of a road tunnel. The amount of the material synthesized for that
specific application was 80kg, producing 1000lt (1tn) of paint, covering 4000 m2. The practical
application has proven that the material retains the same structural characteristics during its
photo-catalytic activity.
Advantages and Innovations
The novel photocatalytic nanomaterial allows degradation of different organic and inorganic
compounds without dangerous by-products
Uses Visible and/or Solar light as opposed to the existing products on the market which
operate only by the use of ultraviolet radiation.
Harvests the additional ~45% of visible light leading to safe indoor and outdoor applications
Is suitable for various application scenarios since it could be incorporated into concrete
surfaces or used as coating for walls, and floors. Furthermore, it is suitable both for indoor
applications or for external use (e.g. sidewalks, landscaping of buildings, etc.)

Summary
A Greek company active in the area of process monitoring for advanced composites
manufacturing has developed a series of turn-key solutions including sensors, measurement
units and data acquisition software for intelligent process monitoring both for the development
and the production of advanced composites. The company is seeking industrial partners from
aerospace, automotive and wind energy sectors or RTD organizations for commercial agreement
with technical assistance or research cooperation agreement.
Details
Description
The Greek company offers a reliable and intelligent monitoring solution for the mass production
of composite parts. The system provides real-time information of important parameters in
regard of the filling and curing processes aiming to optimize the manufacturing process on-site.
In order to achieve this result, special sensors are placed in the mold providing information on
mixing ratio, resin arrival, viscosity build-up, degree of cure and glass transition temperature.
Although, dielectric analysis is considered from the scientific point of view as the most mature
technology to be used for cure monitoring, is inherently suited only for laboratories, in contrast
to the proposed system that is the only reliable solution for industrial use. The novel technology
provides instantly the electrical resistance of the resin, while dielectric analysis always needs
significant data processing before providing meaningful process parameters. It also operates
with a single sensor enjoying speed and accuracy at high level, while dielectric analysis in most
cases, uses multiplexing and deals with more than one sensor. Further, it is compatible with the
widest range of sensors, ensuring that industrial users can have the optimal sensor for each
application, etc. In regard of flow monitoring, the proposed system is also the only dedicated
solution for reliable resin arrival and temperature monitoring, since it checks and ensures
continuously the connection between the monitoring system and the sensors, and provides
directly resin arrival time-stamp for each sensor, while it is also capable to handle an infinite
number of sensors. The system has already been used in an R&D and experimental phase by
major industrial manufacturers producing lightweight structural parts for wind blades, cars,
aircrafts, trains, boats etc. Further, company’s research partnerships include prestigious
research centers and universities all over Europe.
The company has developed a complete and unique series of intelligent monitoring systems
including a wide range of sensors, measurement units and data acquisition software specially
developed for advanced composites manufacturing. Moreover, the company provides turn-key
solutions for process automation, prototype manufacturing systems and consulting services for
composites manufacturing.
NANO & MICRO TECHNOLOGIES
PRAXI Network | www.help-forward.gr Page 96
Advantages and Innovations
The proposed system helps industrial composite manufacturers to reduce manufacturing costs:
Decreases the cure cycle by up to 35%. Cure cycle is the time required to mold a composite
part. A Decrease in the cure cycle effects on an increase on the parts each mold can produce
resulting to increase of productivity and to decrease of labor and energy costs.
Decreases the development phase time by up to 30%. In order to specify the curing
process, current practices are based on trial-and-error. Being able to exactly monitor the
process the system can minimize the period required to arrive to the optimal curing process.
Furthermore, the filling phase can be monitored and optimized while increasing considerably
the process knowledge. At the same time data for checking and updating the simulation
software is also a significant advantage.
Reduces the scrap of expensive materials by 5%. Trial-and-error involves the use of resins
and carbon fibers that have to be scrapped. The absence of control during production may
also lead to increased scrap rates.
The system also enables industrial composite manufacturers to improve product quality:
Optimizes the manufacturing process. The use of process monitoring in the development
phase will improve the optimal process set-up.
Provides real-time and in-situ quality control traceability features. The monitoring of the
product itself and not of the mould during production can provide the unique advantage of
production traceability leading to further process optimization based on the actual
conditions.
However, existing competition uses recipes in the production of composite parts, measuring
only the temperature of the mould and curing time.

A Greek company active in the field of aloe vera production is looking for original aloe vera
barbadensis miller plants to produce aloe vera gel. In order to increase their supplied quantity,
they seek European producers (occupying up to 500 employees) of those plants high on
nutritional value who are willing to enter into Greek market. The company would like to sign
manufacturing agreement.
Details
Description
Located in southern part of Greece, the company dedicated exclusively to cultivation, process
and trade of aloe vera gel is searching for European producers of original aloe vera barbadensis
miller plants.
From the very beginning of its establishment in 2012, they have focused exclusively on the
cultivation and processing of aloe vera barbadensis miller plants. Entering into such a new
emerging market area, their main purpose was to transform the comparative advantage of the
local favouring climate conditions ideal for the cultivation of that type of plant into a sustainable
competitive advantage for their company.
With respect to their business activity, the company is specialised in the step-wise production of
nutritious gel directly extracted by aloe vera. Particularly, they undertake the cultivation of this
type of aloe vera plants; afterwards they process the leaves under its specialised processing
facilities extracting finally the aloe vera gel. The extracted aloe gel is then sold to companies for
after treatment in order to produce final products containing aloe such as health supplement,
body creams, soaps etc.
Accordingly, motivated by the increased demand of natural products, their product, aloe vera
gel, covers the needs of companies which produce and sell aloe based products to the final
consumers.
Aloe is a member of the Lily family, yet it is very cactus-like in appearance. Even though there
are over 240 species of aloe, there are only four recognized as having nutritional value. The
main kind of aloe used in commercial products is aloe barbadensis miller.
The company oriented by this fact is now in need of larger provision in order to produce larger
quantities of aloe vera gel and cover the increased demand. Only the particular type of aloe
plant is requested. It is featured by many medicinal and therapeutic properties used by the
world's largest pharmaceutical companies and among the largest companies in the field of
beauty and cosmetics.
