AVID LARIZADEHAvid is the CEO and co-founder of Boticca.com which is a London-based curated online jewellery marketplace that seeks out independent designers with jewellery that 'has a unique story' and facilitates the distribution of their goods for a 25% cut in revenue. So far, Boticca has been a success: 300 designers in more than 40 countries, $2.5M dollars in first round of funding and publicity facilitated by celebrities such as Lady Gaga or Kate Moss. But what Avid really finds rewarding about her work is when her team tells her that they are proud to work for Boticca and that they love what they do.

Avid has had an incredible breadth of experiences in the field of technology. She studied at Stanford where she majored in telecoms engineering. Since then, she has worked in major technology companies such as Ebay or Skype, where she oversaw the strategic migration from early adopters to mainstream customers. Post-MBA at Harvard Avid worked in venture capital investing in such companies as Wonga, the aggressive pay lender, Mind Candy and Spreadshirt.

Avid says that she got to where she is today because she has been very lucky to have been surrounded by people who have taught and inspired her. They convinced her that “anything is possible” when one puts one’s mind and energy into it with integrity. We're now incredibly grateful that Avid has decided to share her knowledge with us.

HERE WE GO AGAINDear All,

We are so very pleased to welcome you to our second Eyedea event. Eyedea is a network for female professionals in their 20s that aims to connect women from different industries to each other and provide some of that much needed blue-sky thinking space. We launched our network in September with a highly successful dinner hosting Britt Lintner, GLG Hedge Fund Principal, owner of her own label and a mother of two. Britt turned out to be an incredible powerhouse and we still feel very privileged to have listened to her advice!

Today marks our second event, and we are so lucky to have here for breakfast two incredible women: Avid Larizadeh, Founder of Boticca.com and Maggie Berry of Womenintechnology.co.uk. We look forward to hearing from them how can channel the rise of the Internet in our lives and what impact it will have on our careers.

Since our September event our executive team has grown - we have welcomed new blog contributors (thank you to all of you who contributed!) and we have some exciting events lined up for the new year courtesy to new committee members. If you’d like to help organise an event or you would like to write for our blog, do get in touch - [email protected], we always love to get more people involved. Please also spread the word by inviting your friends to like our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/eyedeafmn

Thank you and we much welcome your suggestions for future events!

MAGGIE BERRYMaggie grew up in Scotland and as a teenager moved to Norwich to study at the University of East Anglia. Having worked a bit as a library assistant with the University of Dundee and as a Banking Manager at NatWest upon graduation, she faced a tough choice – to stay close to home or to pursue a career? This is a decision many of us face; Maggie chose the latter more challenging choice and moved to London in search of new life experiences.

In 2000, she started working at a recruitment firm McGregor Boyall focusing primarily on tech recruitment for the financial services sector, and was running accounts for firms like Deutsche Bank. In 2004 the firm undertook a piece of diversity research about IT recruitment in the City, and it quickly became evident that there was a distinct lack of women working in technology roles. Maggie’s boss, Laurie Boyall, bought the URL womenintechnology.co.uk and he gave this project to Maggie.

Since then Maggie has been living and breathing ‘Women in Technology’ and has developed this into a careers and networking forum which boasts over 7,000 members.

Maggie’s stellar efforts have been recognised and rewarded – she was listed as 35 under 25 by Management Today (2010) shortlisted as Business Woman of the Future by Shell in 2011 and most recently honoured as a ‘Global Leader’ by the World Economic Forum in 2012.
