Situation Analysis

This unit of work has been designed to teach the importance of waste management to a grade prep/1 class. The class consists of seven boys (3 preps, 4 grade 1’s) and the school is situated in rural Victoria.

The school is well equipped with resources including a projector in the classroom with access to the World Wide Web. Other mentioned resources such as the books are available from the local library.

The students are experienced in working both independently and as a group. The class has some previous knowledge of recycling resulting from school policy and procedures.

Focus Theme : Reduce, Reuse, RecycleThis unit covers the major themes of waste management and minimising our impact on the environment.

Evaluation for this unit of work is determined by using the following methods:

•Lessons 3 and 4 contain student worksheets used to determine the learners level of understanding.

•Students are required to sort through rubbish and identify the recycle symbol.

•Students are observed to see if they are using The 3R’s within the classroom and the school environment.
