Technology 101
Why
• Create lifelong learners • Authentic real world projects• Children use computers at home • MMOGs – students are already connected
What
• Not bells and whistles• Must add and deepen the experience• More than using PowerPoint or the
Promethean board.
3 levels
• 3 levels for both students and teachers. We can start on any level, our students are often ahead of us.– Doing old things the old way– Doing old thing a new way– Doing something new that we couldn’t do before
How
• Find a technology tool that deepens the learning experience – start with the standard
• Trust students – let them teach us/other students
• Use the technology specialists
Technology Specialists
– We can coach from any stage in lesson planning, the earlier the better
– We can suggest ways to use technology– We can teach you the skills, one on one and in
groups– We can co plan and co-teach– We do not teach alone (no longer the ICT model)
Tech skills for all classes
• internet safety - never put full name, contact info on a public site
• basic word/excel/PowerPoint skills• internet research skills• keyboarding - use type4learning
Some fun tools
• Google earth• Voki• Web pages and blogs• Photostory or windows media maker• Video
Develop
Break into grade level teams. Develop the concept for one project using tech – On chart paper write –• grade level and subjects included • MS – MS and subjects covered• Objectives covered• Project idea• Technology used
Gallery walk
• Gallery walk with notes• Using post-its –write praises and I wonders
(one each)
Break back into teams
• Read the notes (incorporate suggestions?)develop skeleton lesson or unit plan for project, use note catcher
• How will we implement it – work backward from end, What steps do students need to take to get there? What skills, information will they need. How will they develop these? What will need to be directly taught, what can they research? How will you teach these skills? Develop time line – how many days will each section take? If students are working in teams – what role can each team member take? Technology skills can be taught to all of the designers on the teams who can then teach the other team members.
End
• Report back – what were the challenges? What was new? What was easy?
• Conclusion – what have we done/learned? Reflect.
