Technologies we have learnt about:

Live Type Final Cut Lighting Camera shots Pod-casts

Live TypeWhen using live type we learnt that there was a different way to create the opening credits. Instead of having to create a new clip with the names on separately, we put the names above the scene we wanted to use and the words and the shot came up together. We believe that this creates a more sophisticated and professional look to our film.

This was also the first time we were introduced to the live type programme, but we adjusted to it quickly and found it quite simple to use.

Final Cut ExpressWe have used Final cut before on a few tasks in class, but never to create something as long as two minutes. We had to be precise when we cut clips so as to make a cleaner finish to our film.

We also learnt how to create a strange contrast in colour ; rather than just simply using black and white in our shots. This helped our film seem more “dark” and twisted. Black and white filming is also a key code and convention to film noir and we like to think that we have added our own personal twist.

Also, we found an effect that splits the shot in two and plays them at alternating times. This helped reinforce the point that the caretaker has a split personality, and is not functioning normally, as he also see’s in this strange vision.

LightingWe went through a number of lighting workshops so we could create a perfect film noir style shot. Although we didn’t use the lighting on our main task we used them for our preliminary.

Finding the perfect lighting was quite hard as you had to get the composition and contrast right otherwise it would look too dark or too light.

We learnt that lighting does create a more atmospheric theme to the film and we learnt all about the positioning of the lights so as to create an “atmospheric” shot.

Camera ShotsAlthough we have used a camera before for tasks we have done previously, we learnt a lot about new; different shots.

One of which was the famous shot from the shining. We felt that as the shining is an iconic thriller film, it would be right to incorporate it into our film.

It was quite a difficult shot to film because we had to make sure that the framing was good as well as getting the shot at a jaunty angle.

Pod-CastsThis was an alternative media source that we tried to use for our evaluation of our main task.

We had never done a pod-cast before but it was quite easy to make as we spoke about the process of making our film and what we felt that we had learnt.

Pod-casts are a very easy and effective to use.

HMAPWe have learnt a lot about technologies

whilst trying to finish our main and preliminary tasks, and without studying Media studies we wouldn’t have been introduced to them.
