the PowerPoint presentation and standard computer technician tool kit, but it isrecommended that the students actually work in computers.

    Introduction

    MI Introduction (LSI Quadrant I):

Using the proper tools to work on computers saves you time and frustration. A goodcomputer technician should maintain a simple but functional toolkit that can becarried easily.

In addition to the simple computer technicians took kit that is carried with thetechnician, a secondary, more extensive set should be maintained in a fixed locationwhere you regularly maintain and repair old and new computers. Why do you thinkthe extensive sets of tools are not regularly carried to the work site?

    1. The basic took kit contains most of the tools required to upgrade or fix mostsimple computer problems.

    2. Prevents expensive tools from being lost or stolen when you leave your shop.

    Outline

MI Outline (LSI Quadrant II): Instructor Notes:

    I. Introduce computer technicians tools tostudents utilizing a PowerPointpresentationa. Introduce students to the standard

tools in the toolkit that you should notleave behind

    b. Introduce students to specializedcomputer technician tools andsupplies.

    c. Introduce students to some of thesoftware tools used by the computertechnician.

    d. Introduce students to measurementtools (multimeter), used by thecomputer technician

II. Students identify computer technician toolsusing worksheets.a. Students complete word game

    exercise for technician tools.

    Application

MI Guided Practice (LSI Quadrant III):

    1. Teacher shows and demonstrates each tool in the standard tool kit.2. Have students, rotating from student to student, pick up a tool and discuss its

    function.

MI Independent Practice (LSI Quadrant III):

    4

    1. Students working in small teams (2-4) will extract, identify and re-installcomponents from a teacher created list.

    Summary

MI Review (LSI Quadrants I and IV):

    1. Ask students summary questions:

    a. What are the common screwdrivers bits (ends) used by the computertechnician?[Slotted (standard), Phillips, Torx]

    b. What tool dies the computer technician use for retrieving parts droppedinside the computer?[Parts retriever grabber]

    c. What tool does the computer technician use to prevent the discharge intothe delicate computer circuits of the static electricity generated by his/hermovements?[Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) wrist strap]

    2. Show [an additional time] the tools contained in the standard tool kit.

    Evaluation

MI Informal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III):

    1. Teacher will monitor student progress during independent practice andprovide independent re-teach/redirection as needed.

MI Formal Assessment (LSI Quadrant III, IV):

    1. Administer an objective multiple choice test.

    Extension

    MI Extension/Enrichment (LSI Quadrant IV):

    1. Students should create a schematic diagram showing connectedrelationships between computer hardware

    2. Students should create a Lab Report which summarizes the entireexperience.

    Comput er Part s Lab

Directions:Students will work in groups investigating the inside of a typical computer. The

case should be opened to reveal the inner components. The following list has beendeveloped to guide the student to understanding how the components fit together in a

    system.

    List of Components:

    Hard Drive

    CD ROM

    RAM

    CMOS Battery

    Video, Sound or NIC

    Motherboard

    CPU

    Fan(s) Heat Sink

    Power Supply

    All Internal Cables

Assignment:Students will develop their own diagram showing the basic relationships between

all of the listed parts. This is NOT an artist drawing, but a diagram. The student is notto draw the components as they actually see them, but, in their drawing, show what isconnected to what. The drawing does not have to be to scale. In fact, it probablyshould not be to any particular scale. The student might wish to show some relative

size of the components, but it is not required. All students in a group must completetheir own diagram sketch. There should be no two exactly alike, each student will showtheir own interpretation of how the required parts connect. The group can agree ongeneral ideas of how something connects to another, but how that is shown in thediagram is up to the individual student. Students may use color, but it is not required.

I nstr uctions:Students should fill out the lab report in its entirety. All blanks should have an

answer. If an individual question does not apply to the lab being taken, then a N/Ashould be written into that space. Be sure to fill out the header portion of the form forname, course, date, and title of lab.
