KEY MESSAGE

For Educators:

Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) is one of the basic subjects in the

implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program composed of four components

namely, Agri - Fishery, Home Economics, Industrial Arts and Information

Communication Technology. In this module, the focus is on Home Economics Course

- Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies.

According to George Washington Carver, “Education is the key to unlock the

golden door of freedom”; thus, the Department of Education extends their resources

and finds alternative ways to address your needs and to adapt to the new normal of

the educational system as a bridge to Learning Continuity Plan. To address such

needs, the teacher-made learning modules are crafted.

You are reading the Animation NC II Grade - 11: First Quarter Alternative

Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Maintain Hand Tools, Equipment and

Paraphernalia (TLE_ICTAN9-12MT-Id-1) as written based on the K-12 Basic

Education Curriculum. This course is designed for high school students to develop

knowledge, skills, and attitude in the performance of cookery tasks.

Through the combined efforts of expert and competent educators from various

levels and schools in the Department of Education - Division of Cebu Province, this

module is created for your convenience. Despite all physical, social and economic

restraints in the current teaching scenarios, this module came out after a thorough

planning, organization, editing and verification of the development team in order to

cater all the needs of our diverse learners.

challenges brought by the pandemic. The learners are given independent learning

activities which are anchored on the competencies based on the K-12 Curriculum

Guide, thus engaging them to work at their own pace within the comforts of their own

homes. This will gear them in acquiring the prerequisite 21st Century skills that will

adequately prepare them for work, start a business, acquire middle level skills and

continue to higher education.

Therefore, your topmost priority is to explain clearly on how our learners will use

this module. You are to ensure that the learner’s progress and development will be

monitored and their strengths and weaknesses will be appropriately assessed while

doing independently the activities in each part of the module. Moreover, you

consistently provide feedback to the learning facilitators about the progress of the

learners and encourage, as well, the learners to comply and to finish the modules on

time.

Safety Procedures in Using Hand Tools and Equipment

Adapted from Basic Safety Rules for Hand Tools (Originally From www.Teched101.Com)Lowell Corporation / News / The Lowell Blog / Basic Safety Rules For Hand Tools (Originally From Www.Teched101.Com)

A worker must always be aware of the task he must accomplish so that he

would know the hand tools that he needs.

1. Ways to utilized tools:

A. Cutting tools must always be kept sharp.

B. Gripping tools must always maintain a strong grip

2. Work space must also be observed properly.

3. Correct posture must be practiced when using hand tools.

4. Use the proper PPE necessary to protect you from exposure to potential hazards.

Basic Safety Rules for Hand Tools

• Always wear eye protection.

• Wear the right safety equipment for the job.

• Use tools that are the right size & right type for your job.

• Follow the correct procedure for using every tool.

• Keep your cutting tools sharp and in good condition.

• Don’t work with oily or greasy hands.

• Handle sharped-edge and pointed tools with care.

• Always carry pointed tools by your side with the points and heavy ends down.

• Secure all small work & short work with a vise or clamp.

• Never carry tools in your pockets.

• Don’t use tools which are loose or cracked.

• Keep our punches & chisels in good condition. Mushroomed heads can chip &

cause injuries.

• Don’t use a file without a handle.

• Don’t pry or hammer with a file. It may shatter.

• Don’t use screwdrivers as chisels or pry bars.

• Don’t try to increase your leverage by using a “cheater” with a wrench.

Wrenches are designed at the right strength for their size and length.

• After using a tool — clean it and return it to its proper storage place.

• If anything breaks or malfunctions — report it to your supervisor at once.

• Use the right type of tool for the job.

• Never place tools and materials where they hang on the edge of a bench.

• Don’t use tools for things they weren’t meant for.

• Store tools and materials vertically, with the points and heavy end down.

• Cut away from yourself when you use chisels and other edged tools.

WHAT IS IT

Page 12: Technical-Vocational Livelihood

• Don’t force screws; make sure that the correct screw for the job is being used.

One basic thing to remember to keep hand tools, equipment and paraphernalia

clean is to make sure that the workplace is properly organized.

1. The work area must always be kept neat and tidy.

2. All tools and equipment must be placed in a clean and dry place.

3. Clean tools and equipment work more efficiently. This lessens the effort

needed to operate them and reduces the possibility of mishaps.

4. Before cleaning any tool, be sure to wear the proper personal protective

equipment (PPE). Gloves, masks and goggles are usually worn when cleaning

tools since most cleaning agents and solutions are harmful to the human body.

5. Only use cleaning agents as prescribed by the tool or equipment’s

manufacturer. Follow the cleaning procedures as well to make sure that no

damage will be inflicted on the tools.

6. Cleaning the tools after use is highly recommended.

7. Tools with moving parts often suffer loosening of its parts. This is normal

since these segments keep on moving. A tool with loose parts will not function

properly and may cause injuries.

8. Gripping tools such as a plier is an example that needs tightening. A plier’s

rivet must be well tightened to be able to grip properly.

9. Lubricants must also be applied after tightening to reduce the friction.

10. Driving tools’ handles must also be tightened to reduce hand strain when

turning.

COMMON MALFUNCTIONS OF HAND TOOLS, EQUIPMENT AND

PARAPHERNALIA

According to NDC Computer Hardware Servicing Catulpos (blogs January

2018) discussed that, the proper use of tools, equipment and paraphernalia will greatly

increase efficiency and occupational safety in a workplace. Having the proper

knowledge and skills in using such tools is needed in order to operate and use them

effectively. But more often than not, problems and malfunctions may arise while using

these tools. These malfunctions can be minimized by exercising careful usage of the

tools.

Malfunctions and other unplanned and unusual event may not be totally

eliminated, but it can surely be minimized.

1. In using a driving tool, screws may skip the tip of the screw driver.

2. Small objects tend to fall down

MALFUNCTIONS

1. In using striking tools the heads are separating from the handle.

2. Misshape in using cutting tools and power tools is also dangerous.

6

User
DMWMark
User
Version 2.0
Page 13: Technical-Vocational Livelihood

ex. Slippage of materials to be cut

3. In diagnostic tools inaccurate reading may occur if this tool is not properly

calibrated.

Listed below are some of the malfunctions and unplanned events when using

the different tools in completing a job requirement:

• When using a driving tool, screws may slip the tip of the screw driver. This

happens when the screw driver is not properly aligned with drive of the screw’s

head. This can be minimized by making sure that the tip of the screw driver is

well secured in the drive of the screw’s head. Using a screw driver with a

magnetized tip can also help minimize this type of malfunction.

• Small objects tend to fall down when being held by a gripping tool like pliers.

This usually happens when the jaws of the pliers are blunt, thus making it hard

to hold on things. This can be prevented by making sure that gripping tools

have well maintained jaws that can grasp objects properly.

• The use of striking tools also imposes a great threat if there will be a

malfunction. Common hazards are heads separating away from the handle.

This could cause severe injuries to anyone. To avoid this type of accident, the

handle of a striking tool must be tightly attached to its head.

• Mishaps in using cutting tools is also dangerous. Malfunctions may arise from

slippage of the material to be cut. This may also happen if a cutting tool is not

sharp enough. These unplanned events will cause laceration and wounds to

the user. To avoid this, cutting tools must always be kept sharp.

• Power tools also impose danger during mishaps. Common problems are

electrical short circuiting or mechanical problems. Malfunctioning power tools

may cause electrocution and even decapitation of the limbs. These accidents

can be avoided by making sure that all power tools are well maintained and are

in fit operating condition.

• Diagnostic tools may not impose a threat to the well-being of a worker but

inaccurate reading may compromise the completion of a job requirement.

Inaccurate reading may occur if a diagnostic tool is not properly calibrated. To

avoid this, a regular calibration to all diagnostic tools must be done.

REMEMBER:

• There is certainly no absolute way to avoid any unforeseen malfunctions.

• The only way to minimize them is to have the appropriate knowledge in using

the different tools.

• Proper inspection and assessment of tools must also be practiced to ensure

the safety of the worker and the accurate completion of a job requirement.

• Having a first aid kit in the work area is also necessary so that quick response

and cure can be applied in case of any injuries.

Custodial Property Officer Competencies

According to the article of Property and Equipment policy Officer made

mention that, Property Custodians are the individuals responsible for the physical

custody, care, and safekeeping over property in their possession or under their

supervision. Custodians often have other job responsibilities aside from the

management of property. Physical inventories are an important aspect of a property

custodian’s responsibilities.

The primary purpose of a physical inventory is to account for all accountable

items on the custodial area’s inventory list. Regularly scheduled physical inventories

must be conducted and the on-hand quantities and conditions must be reconciled to

the accountable property records maintained in the accountable property system of

record (APSR). The importance of this task cannot be taken lightly. Routine physical

inventories establish and improve accuracy and accountability of property in the

custody of the Department. Judicious physical inventories directly impact property

availability, procurement actions, financial visibility, and overall supply effectiveness.

The custodial officer is responsible for assisting the Accountable Property

Officer (APO) in establishing and maintaining the most accurate accountable

property records possible. For example, the physical inventory only shows whether

items were found. Items that were not found may have been lost, stolen, destroyed,

legitimately disposed of (but unrecorded), or simply missed during the inventory.

Custodial officers may have the additional duty of uncovering what happened to

those items that were not found and entering the data into the APSR.

The following results should be achieved from the physical inventory:

• Verifying that property on record is on hand in the physical location or proper

custodial area assigned, and has an identification marking and condition

recorded

• Identifying unrecorded property so it can be reconciled to the property system

and financial system

• Locating or identifying missing items

• Reconciling custodial, accountable, and financial records are reconciled

• Identifying items that need repair or are excess and may be disposed

Adapted from the QSFT, Equipment Borrowing Procedure, the school has

recently upgraded equipment and therefore to ensure everyone has an equal opportunity to use the equipment we’ve also updated our policy on booking and checking out equipment. The booking process has been changed to make it more efficient, organized and accurate.
