TECHNICAL SCHEDULE (TS)

THE CONTRIBUTION OF EDGE SEALS TO THE CONTROL OF SMOKE LEAKAGE VIA DOORSETS

FOREWORD

This Technical Schedule (TS) forms part of a series of controlled documents which comprise the CERTIFIRE product certification scheme. It has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO/IEC 17065 for product certification bodies. In addition to this Schedule the other controlled documents relevant to CERTFIRE certification are:

TS00 - General Requirements for CERTIFIRE Certification of Passive Fire Protection Products/Systems

CERTIFIRE Quality Manual

Certificates in the CF000 series, together with any appendices

Documentation from the manufacturer

Rules for use of the CERTIFIRE logo

This CERTIFIRE scheme aims to provide confidence that smoke seals installed in smoke control doors will enable the doorset to achieve the required level of ambient smoke control and, where relevant, not detract from their fire resistance.

This document is intended for the certification of ambient door smoke seals. It has been prepared by the organisations listed in Annex F and agreed in accordance with the requirements of BS EN ISO/IEC 17065. Individual components can have a significant influence on the performance of smoke control and fire resistance of doors and doorsets. This TS incorporates criteria to help ensure that the doors will provide the requisite performance when correctly fitted with other CERTIFIRE approved components.

Smoke seals eligible for certification under this Technical Schedule will be designed to be fitted to doors required to comply with the ambient smoke control requirements of UK legislation based on the provisions of BS476: Part 31.1 or EN1634 - 3. The certification may also be appropriate to other jurisdictions where the same performance criteria apply. This version of TS21 supersedes previous versions and becomes effective from May 2010.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This Technical Schedule defines the technical requirements via testing and appraisal for seals designed to contribute to the control of smoke leakage at ambient temperature around the perimeter of pedestrian doors.

1.2 Evaluation of smoke control performance is in accordance with BS476: Part 31.1. 1.3 Certification against European specifications is not possible under this TS. although

testing in accordance with EN1634-3 may be used in support of the seal’s performance. 1.4 A separate TS, based on European specifications will be drafted in due course. 1.5 Approval is applicable only to seals fitted to pedestrian doorsets that are hinged on one

vertical edge or pivoted as single or multiple leaves of single or double action configuration.

1.6 Certification is designed to be applicable to seals fitted to CERTIFIRE approved doors

but may also be applicable to others. 1.7 Certification will apply to a seal or range of seals based upon a given design and using

the same materials. When a company manufactures, or fabricates products from significantly different components and/or materials then a separate certificate may be required for each type of seal,

1.8 The detailed field of application in the Certificate of Approval will identify any limitations

applying to the use and interchangeability of smoke seals.

ANNEX A

TEST PROCEDURES A.1 Testing - General Appraisals shall be based upon information derived from appropriate tests are specified

in Clauses A.2 to A.5. The primary test evidence to be considered in support of an appraisal shall be generated

by UKAS approved laboratories or other laboratories acceptable to CERTIFIRE as detailed in CERTIFIRE’s ‘Regulations and Procedures Pertaining to Certification’.

In order that any test is performed in a manner that generates data directly applicable to

the door seal under consideration, it is necessary to restrict the test conditions or specimen design as indicated in clauses A.3 to A.5.

A.2 Test Evidence - General A.2.1 A test shall be performed in accordance with the procedures specified in BS 476: Part

31.1 on a test assembly of a design appropriate to the seal type being evaluated and which complies with the specified opening and closing resistances (see A.3 to A.5). The tested assembly shall satisfy the criteria for the leakage of ambient temperature smoke of 3m3/m/hr at a pressure of 25 Pa (see Note 2).

A.2.2 An assembly of the appropriate design when fitted with the seals to be CERTIFIRE

approved shall be subjected to the following opening and closing cycles; i) Single swing doors - through 10o of opening for 100,000 cycles; ii) Double swing doors - through an arc of 10o about the centre line of the assembly

for 50,000 cycles. The seal shall be deemed to have satisfied the test if it can be shown that: a) The closing resistance resulting from contact between the seal and the adjacent

surface does not exceed 17.5 or 21 Nm for latched and unlatched doors respectively when measured following reasonable cleaning and refurbishment of the test rig or its accessories.

b) The seals will continue to satisfy the 3m3/m/hr criteria when the assembly is

tested to BS 476: Part 31.1 for a second time. Light cleaning of the frame and the leaf edge is permitted.

A.2.3 The smoke seal shall have been included in a door assembly tested to BS 476: Part

20/22 or EN1634-1 in a manner than demonstrates that the fitting of the seal does not reduce the fire resistance of an assembly. Where possible a direct correlation shall exist to show how the door, together with its intumescent, is unaffected by the fitting of the seals. (see Note 3).

A.2.4 Any separate smoke seal (i.e. not a seal that incorporates an integral intumescent

material) that is not stop mounted shall not inhibit the fitting of ironmongery and heat activated seals. A maximum width for a CERTIFIRE approved smoke seal shall be 15mm unless the manufacturer’s literature gives clear guidance on the specification and the method of fitting ironmongery and heat activated seals.

A.3 Compression/Deflection Seals (C/D) and Wiping Seals for single acting doors (W-

S). A.3.1 Test Assembly The leaf shall be an all cellulosic leaf (type C) of between 800mm and 950mm width by

between 2000mm and 2100mm high and at least 43mm thick, consisting of either a solid laminated softwood strip core or a softwood framed flax board/chipboard core, faced with plywood, hardboard or chipboard. The frame shall be softwood or hardwood with no unsealed, ‘through’ joints at the corners. The frame shall be provided with a 12mm deep removable timber door stop screw fixed at 300mm nominal centres. The frame jambs shall be fixed back to the test surround with no less than 4 fixings per jamb, the upper and lower fixings being no more than 150mm from the jamb ends. The head shall be fixed with at least a single, central fixing.

The gap between the leaf edge and the frame head and jambs shall be between 3mm

and 4.5mm. The leaf and frame edges shall be rounded with a radius of 2.5±0.5mm. The threshold gap (between bottom of leaf edge and test frame member of threshold if fitted) shall be sealed in a manner that permits the leaf to move sufficiently to permit the door to break contact with the seal without causing the permissible resistance to closing forces to be exceeded.

The leaf shall be hung on 3 No (1½ Pairs) hinges such that with no smoke seals fitted the

resistance to closing is not more than 2Nm when the threshold is sealed as described above. The hinges shall comply with BS 7352: Class 6 with the addition of the requirement to satisfy the maximum frictional resistance of 2Nm, when hung as a set. These may be fitted conventionally or may be fitted as hinges fixed on the face. In the latter case the manufacturer’s data sheet supplied with the product shall clearly state how the seals are fitted with conventional hinges.

Whilst the assembly is being tested unlatched the opening stile and jamb shall be tested

in one the following conditions: a) With a forend plate and striker plate of the size and type specified in the

manufacturers product data sheet. b) With a forend plate fitted which is of the following minimum dimensions Height 175mm Width 25mm together with an appropriate striker plate as defined or specified for the product.

c) With the seal fitted in a manner that stimulates the fitting of such components;

e.g. by leaving gaps in the seal where it would be interrupted by such ironmongery.

d) With plain stiles and jambs free from ironmongery but in this condition the

manufacturers literature shall clearly state how the seals are fitted to accommodate CERTIFIRE approved ironmongery components without negating the smoke sealing ability or without being interrupted by ironmongery.

If the seal is only suitable for fitting to unlatched doors, due to the resistance to closing

figures being too high to accommodate the additional resistance of the latch that is to be fitted, or due to the size or shape of the sealing system, then the need to incorporate or simulate the ironmongery may be omitted but the manufacturers product data sheet shall clearly state this restriction.

A.3.2 Testing Regime a) Hang the leaf in the frame as described in clause A.3.1. b) Adjust the assembly until the moment required to open and close the door over

an arc of at least 30 degrees is not more than 2Nm. (The apparatus shown in Figure 2 is suitable for this purpose).

c) Fit the smoke seals to be evaluated to the head and jambs of the assembly. d) Open the door at least 3o and apply a closing moment of 14 Nm at the leaf

centroid and check that the leaf reaches its closed position i.e. contact with the stop and/or seal as appropriate for wiping and deflection seals or contact with the seal for compression seals. (i.e. at a position that would not prevent a latch bolt from engaging in the case of a latched door).

In the case where the above criteria are not complied with the closing moment

may be increased to 17Nm. If the seals comply with this requirement they may be allowed to be used only on unlatched door assemblies and this must be clearly stated in the manufacturer’s literature and in his product data sheet.

e) Apply an opening moment of 30Nm at the leaf centroid to ensure that the door

opens at least 3o. f) Apply and maintain a closing moment at the leaf centroid of 20Nm. g) Seal the threshold as described in A.3.1 or by means of the same seal as fitted

for evaluation as in Clause c) above. (See Note 4). h) Perform the leakage test described in BS 476: Part 31.1 or EN1634-3 at a

positive chamber pressure of 25Pa relative to the laboratory atmosphere and determine compliance with the criteria given in A.2.1. The assembly shall be tested from both sides unless it can be demonstrated that the test represents the most onerous condition, e.g. on an outward opening leaf in the case of a stop of a mounted seal.

i) Perform the cycling test described in A.2.2. A.3.3 If any adjustments are made to the seals during the course of the testing regime in order

to achieve any of the criteria the test shall be repeated from A.3.2.a).

A.3.4 Seals that satisfy the leakage criteria when subjected to the test specified in Clause 5.3 may be used on the head, frame jambs and hanging stiles of single swing, single and double leaf door assemblies. (See Note 6). The leaves of these assemblies may be latched with an ‘easy-action’ latch, i.e. requiring a maximum closing moment of 5Nm, if fitted, or unlatched unless an additional closing moment of 15Nm was required to close the door (see A.3.2). In this case the seals may only be used as part of an unlatched assembly.

A.4 Wiping Seals - Double acting doors and plain meeting stiles (W-D) A.4.1 Test Assembly The leaf shall be an all cellulosic leaf (type C) between 800mm and 950mm wide by

between 2000mm and 2100mm high and at least 43mm thick consisting of either a solid laminated softwood strip core or a softwood framed flaxboard/chipboard core, faced with plywood, hardboard or chipboard. The frame shall be softwood or hardwood with no unsealed through joints at the corner. The frame jambs shall be fixed back to the test surround with no less than 4 fixings per jamb, the upper and lower fixings being no more than 150mm from the jamb ends. The head shall be fixed with at least a single, central fixing.

The gap between the leaf edge and the frame head and jambs shall be between 3.5mm

and 4.5mm. The leaf and frame edges shall be rounded with a radius of 2.5±0.5mm. The threshold gap between bottom of the leaf edge and test frame member (or threshold, if fitted) shall be sealed in a manner that permits the leaf to move sufficiently to demonstrate the seals ability to tolerate movement without causing the permissible resistance to closing forces to be exceeded. The leaf shall be hung on an adjustable top centre and bottom pivot and strap such that with no smoke seals fitted the resistance to closing is not more than 2Nm when the threshold is sealed as described above.

Whilst the door is tested unlatched many double leaf single acting doors are fitted with

bolts and latches and some double acting doors are fitted with bolts and/or locks for security purposes.

It is recommended that the door assembly above be tested in one of the following conditions: a) With a forend plate and striker plate, box keep and flush bolts (not engaged) of

the size and type specified in the manufacturers product data sheet. b) With a forend plate fitted which is of the following minimum dimensions: Height 155mm Width 25mm

together with an appropriate striker plate and keep as defined or specified for the product, and 2 No flush bolts of the following minimum dimensions:

Height 225mm Width 25mm c) With the seal fitted in a manner that simulates the fitting of such components; e.g.

by leaving gaps in the seal where it would be interrupted by such ironmongery. (See Note 5).

If none of the above items are fitted because the seals are only designed for use on

unlatched doors, or unsecured double acting doors this must be clearly stated in the manufacturers product data sheet.

A.4.2 Testing Regime a) Hang the leaf in the frame on a pair of pivots as described in clause A.4.1 with

the leaf centre line in line with the centre line of the frame and, by means of an indicator, establish this as the datum.

b) Measure the opening moment applied at the centroid of the door leaf when

moving the leaf in either direction at least 15o each side of the centre line. It shall not require more than 2Nm to move the leaf away from or towards the datum position. Adjust assembly until the figure is achieved.

c) Fit smoke seals to be evaluated to the head and jambs of the assembly. d) Open door at least 3o and apply a closing moment at the leaf centroid of 17Nm

and check that the leaf achieves its central datum position from either direction of closing.

e) Apply an opening moment 30Nm at the leaf centroid when the door is at rest in

the datum position to ensure that the door opens at least 3o. This should be performed for both directions of opening and confirmed for each direction from which the leaf may come to rest.

f) Apply and maintain a closing moment against the direction of applied pressure at

the leaf centroid of 20Nm. This will require a limiting device at the datum position to restrain the door from opening into the pressure chamber.

g) Seal the threshold as described in A.4.1, or by means of the same seal as fitted

for evaluation as in clause c) above if appropriate. (See Note 4). h) Perform the leakage test described in BS 476: Part 31.1, at a positive chamber

pressure of 25Pa and determine compliance with the criteria given in A.2.1. i) Perform the cycling test specified in A.2.2. A.4.3 If any adjustments are made to the seals during the course of the testing regime in order

A.5 Threshold Seals (TS) A.5.1 Test Assembly The test shall be performed on either a single swing or a double swing, single leaf

assembly as appropriate to the seal under evaluation. In the case of a universal threshold seal a single swing assembly will be used.

The general assembly shall comply with the specifications given in A.3.1 and A.4.1

respectively. The gap between the leaf edges and the frame are not critical if it is only the threshold seal that is being evaluated as the other gaps will be sealed as described. The leaf edges and the edges of any timber threshold shall be rounded with a radius of 2.5± 0.5mm. The gaps down both jambs and across the frame head shall be sealed in a manner that permits the leaf to move sufficiently to demonstrate the seals ability to tolerate movement without causing the permissible resistance to closing forces to be exceeded.

The leaf shall be hung as described in A.3.1 or A.3.4 as appropriate to the assembly

under test. A.5.2 Testing Regime a) The testing regimes described in clauses A.3.2 and A.4.2 clause a) to +) should

be used as appropriate to the assembly under test except that the value of the moment used in clause d) shall be 3Nm for a double acting or unlatched door or 2.5Nm in the case of a latched door.

b) Seal the head and jambs as described in A.5.1 (See Note 7). c) Perform the leakage test described in BS 476: Part 31.1 at a positive chamber

pressure of 25Pa and determine compliance with the criteria given in A.2.1. d) Perform the cycling test specified in A.2.2. A.5.3 If any adjustment is made to the seals during the course of the testing regime in order to

achieve any of the criteria the test shall be repeated from A.5.2.a) A.5.4 Seals that satisfy the leakage criteria when subjected to the test specified in clause A.5

may be used on the threshold of single or double leaf door assemblies. Any restriction on use with respect to single or double swing shall be clearly stated in the manufacturer’s product data sheet.

Note 1: Whilst this Technical Schedule only addresses itself to establishing the suitability

of a seal to be used in conjunction with timber doors and leaves, the principles and methodology can be adapted and used, on an ad-hoc basis, to establish the suitability of seals for use on metal assemblies.

Note 2: The length of the leakage path to which the leakage criteria applies is the

perimeter of the leaf to which the seal being evaluated is fitted. In the case of

double leaf doorsets this includes the length of the meeting stiles. If a set of seals is being evaluated simultaneously including a threshold seal, then all four edges are to be included in establishing the criteria. Examples given below are based upon a 2040mm high by 826mm wide leaf hung as a single or double leaf.

SASD - no threshold seal in evaluation = (2040 x 2) + 826mm leakage path 4.91m SASA - no threshold seal in evaluation = (2040 x 3) + (2 x 826mm) leakage path = 7.77m SADD - with threshold seals = (2040 x 3) + (4 x 826mm) leakage path = 9.42m NB. SASD = Single acting (SA), single door (SD) SADD = Single action (SA), double door (DD) etc. Note 3: When making an assessment against this Technical Schedule on a combined

intumescent and smoke seal, then in addition to satisfying the leakage rate prescribed in the seal shall also have been evaluated on a doorset against the procedures described in BS 476: Part 22: Clauses 6 and 7 and obtained an integrity rating commensurate with the quantity of intumescent fitted, i.e. 30 minutes for a cross-section of 20mm2 and 60 minutes for a cross section of 40mm2.

Note 4: A method of satisfying this requirement is to fit a temporary stop at the threshold

to which is fitted a seal identical to that being evaluated on the head and jambs. In this case the length of this seal is incorporated in the calculations when determining the leakage rate/m of the seal.

Note 5: With a conventional timber door assembly it is unlikely to satisfy the required

leakage criteria with gaps in the seals to simulate ironmongery. Note 6: Symmetrical wiping seals evaluated in accordance with the recommendations

given in 5.3 may be assessed as being suitable for use on the head, jambs and meeting stiles of double acting door assemblies without performing the tests described in Clause A.4.

Note 7: It may be convenient to fit an inverted threshold seal at the head of assembly. The calculated leakage rate shall take the additional length of seal into account. In this case the jambs are required to be sealed in a manner that provides a continuous line contact without restraining the door movement.

ANNEX B Within the series of Technical Schedules relating to the components which make up a fire resisting door assembly, it is sometimes necessary to sub-divide fire doors into different categories. These categories are given below:- Type C Door leaves where all parts of the construction are of timber or other cellulosic

material, e.g. flaxboard, chipboard, fibreboard etc, or leaves where inorganic or mineral based materials are surrounded by softwood or hardwood framing. The mineral based material may be in the form of a solid slab or as sub-facings either side of a void, with or without intermediate rails. The timber framing must be unprotected for not less than 40mm which includes any lipping. The framing may be reinforced by additional timber or similar material at the head or at lock blocks to product a larger frame to support ironmongery.

Type I-O Door leaves constructed primarily of inorganic, or mineral based materials where

the surrounding frame of timber is less than 40mm wide, including any lippings. Type H Door leaves where a type ‘C’ door leaf, normally all of cellulosic construction is

faced on both sides with an inorganic board or a rigid intumescent sheet material not less than 2mm thick, either as a facing or a sub-facing. This material will extend from leaf edge to leaf edge, excluding any lippings.

Type M Door leaves where the facings or sub-facings are of a steel construction and

where the edges are metal (excluding any seals fitted), including primarily glazed leaves where the structural leaf framing consist of metal sections.

SMOKE SEALS

1. Dyana Doors smoke seals are used for sealing door assemblies against leakage of

ambient temperature smoke, as defined in BS 476: Part 31.1. They do not contain intumescent material.

2. This certification is designed to demonstrate compliance of the product or system

specifically with Approved Document B (England and Wales), Section 2 of the Technical Standards (Scotland), Technical Booklet E (N. Ireland). If compliance is required to other regulatory or guidance documents there may be additional considerations or conflict to be taken into account.’

3. Within BS 5588: Part 1, a fire door required to resist the passage of smoke at ambient

temperature conditions should, when tested in accordance with BS 476: Section 31.1 with the threshold taped and subjected to a pressure of XX Pa, have a leakage not exceeding X m3/m/h. The threshold gap should be sealed either by a seal either with a leakage rate not exceeding Xm3/m/h at XX Pa or just contacting the floor. Where this is impracticable the threshold gap should not exceed X mm at any point.

4. The door seals are approved on the basis of: i) Initial type testing ii) A design appraisal against TS21

iii) Certification of quality management systems to ISO9001 iv) Inspection and surveillance of factory production control.

5. This approval certifies that the above seals are suitable for use with single-acting door

assemblies required to restrict smoke leakage at ambient temperatures as defined in Appendix B of Approved Document B, ‘Fire Safety’ to the Building Regulations 1991. It is applicable to latched and unlatched, single-leaf assemblies consisting of timber faced and edged leaves with timber, cellulosic or mineral cores in timber frames with or without intumescent edge seals (Code ITT and TT respectively). It is only applicable to assemblies that have been approved, or have been shown by test, to achieve the required period of fire resistance.

6. The seals shall be uninterrupted and fixed around the head and vertical edges of the

frame. The seals may be provided in brown, black and white colours. 7. The approval relates to on-going production. Product and/or its immediate packaging is

identified with the manufacturers’ name, the product name or number, the CERTIFIRE name or name and mark, together with the CERTIFIRE certificate number and application where appropriate.
