Technical product information
Customer statement I workshop findings
Infotainment screen locked up - software loading screen displayed or blank screen
Technical background
A flash memory (NANO) error can result in an apparent failure of the complete infotainment unit
(RNS). This so called 'lock-up' results in no screen activity.
A software solution contained on a disc, refer to Parts information table below, has been developed
that may recover the Infotainment unit and avoid further lock-up
Production change
New software to be introduced for 2013MY
Measure
In the event of an infotainment unit (RNS) lock-up on the applicable vehicles the following process
should be performed in an attempt to recover the unit. If none of the following operations are
successful in recovering the infotainment unit then contact your Bentley TSC describing the customer
fault and your initial findings in detail via DISS
Before using the recovery disc attempt to reinstate correct infotainment unit operation , firstly using the
button press reset method and if that is not successful carry out a "fuse pull" reset
Note: Ensure a suitable battery charger is correctly connected to the vehicles electrical system for the
duration of this procedure
Figure 1
1. Option 1 a Carry out a button press reset of the RNS unit
a. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn on the ignition

b. Almost simultaneously, but ensuring the two buttons on the left are press slightly before, press
and hold the three buttons at the top of the infotainment unit screen (see Figure 1)

2. Option 1 b carry out "fuse pull" reset. Note this should only be performed if option 1 a does not
recover the unit
a. Ensure the ignition is switched off and the key is placed on the top roll
b. Remove the drivers knee roll outer trimmed panel enabling access to the Drivers facia fusebox.
Refer to workshop manual Rep.Gr70-Dashboard panels - Knee roll assembly - To remove and
fit

c. Remove fuse 17 (10A) and fuse 33 (SA) from the drivers facia fusebox. (see Figure 2) Once the
fuses are removed they can then be replaced
d. Insert the key into the ignition switch and turn on the ignition
e. The Bentley wings should be displayed
f. Within five minutes the system should have fully re-started indicated by either the radio or media
screen operating
3. Once one or both of the above resets have been carried out attempt to load the revised software
contained on the update/recovery disc. This operation should be attempted whether the
infotainment unit has been successfully recovered using option1 a orb above or it is still in a state
of lock-up.
IMPORTANT: When performing software updates it is always advisable to attach prominent warning
signs on the vehicle alerting other people within the dealership that a software update is in progress.
It should be clear to personnel in the vicinity of the vehicle that whilst the updates are in progress the
ignition state should not be changed the battery charger or any associated equipment must not be
removed or switched off
1.
1. Ensure the ignition is switched off and the key is placed on the top roll
Figure 3
2. Switch on the infotainment unit via the on off button (see Figure 3)

6. Once complete the CD will automatically be ejected and the "SWL success" message will appear
(see Figure 7)
7. Remove the CD completely. The screen will go blank
8. Allow the system to restart; this may require the ON/OFF button to be pressed (see Figure 3) . The
restart is complete after two minutes
9. If none of the above operations were successful in recovering the infotainment unit then contact
your Bentley TSC describing the customer fault and your initial findings via DISS. If the software
down load was successful then the repair is complete once the software version management
target/actual comparison is carried out
Perform Software Version Management (SVM) Target/Actual comparison
10.Connect the VAS 5052A vehicle diagnostic computer to the vehicle. As an SVM is required the
Bluetooth connection is not recommended
