Executive Summary The Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) Database System Application has been developed to provide a powerful yet user-friendly tool to store, manage and analyze the data collected in the framework of the forest resources inventories conducted from 2014 until 2016 in the sites of the National REDD+ System Philippines Project in the Visayas and Mindanao selected for forest land use planning (FLUP) and the implementation of REDD+ eligible activities (Borongan City and Maydolong in Eastern Samar, Caraga, Manay and Tarragona in Davao Oriental). The same application has also been used to process the data collected in the framework of the FRA conducted in 2015 in the sites of the Forest and Climate Protection Project Panay - Phase II in Aklan, Antique, Capiz and Iloilo adjacent to the Panay Mountain Range (the inventory covers 38 municipalities). The underlying inventory methodology is described by Lennertz et al. (2017). It is a refinement of the forest carbon baseline study carried out from 2011 until 2012 in Leyte in the framework of the Climate relevant Modernization of Forest Policy and Piloting of Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) Project. It takes into account evolving international standards and good practices with regards to forest carbon stock assessment in compliance with the latest (2006) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines for national greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories. The database architecture used to store and handle the inventory data is described in detail in a separate document by Barrois (2017a). Powered by the leading open source cross-platform relational database management system (RDBMS) software ORACLE MySQL (see https://www.mysql.com) using the popular Structured Query Language (SQL), the FRA Database System Application is programmed using the equally cross-platform ORACLE Java Standard Edition (SE) Development Kit (JDK) (see http://www.oracle.com/ technetwork/java/javase/overview/index.html). The installation of the FRA Database System Application Version 4.1 and of the required free software (ORACLE MySQL Community Server 5.7.17.0 and ORACLE Java Standard Edition (SE) Runtime Environment [JRE] 8 Update 121) under MICROSOFT Windows operating system environments is described step-by-step in a separate installation guide (Barrois 2017b). The present document serves as a guide for administrators and users of Version 4.1 of the application. The subsequent, related and duly cross-referenced chapters provide a comprehensive and illustrated description of the functionalities of the system, covering the following subjects:
Types of accounts and databases (Chapter 1);
Application startup and initialization (Chapter 2);
Overview of the user interface (Chapter 3);
Creation and management of inventories (Chapter 4);
Encoding and management of Sampling Units (Chapter 5) and inventory teammates (Chapter 6);
Consultation and management of referential databases shared by all inventories (Chapter 7);
Analyses of inventories (Chapter 8).
Though currently implemented as standalone application (where the computer acts simultaneously as server and as client using a local database), the FRA Database System Application can easily be upgraded to work in a networked environment with a remote database.

1. Types of Accounts and Databases The FRA Database System Application distinguishes among two types of (password-protected) accounts with distinctive user rights:
User, whose rights are limited to the following operations on existing inventories:
o View and query common database tables (LGU data, tree, bamboo, palm, rattan and tree fern species, teammates);
o Activate, backup and/or export inventories;
o Add, edit and delete inventory data;
o Analyze inventory data;
Administrator, whose rights expand beyond those of a User to the following operations:
o Edit common database tables (LGU data, tree, bamboo, palm, rattan, tree fern species, teammates, all used classification systems: terrain, land classification, 2010 NAMRIA land and forest cover, land cover, forest type and tree crown cover classes);
o Create and/or restore inventories and/or change their properties.
In the following, operations requiring Administrator rights are shown in italics. The database is divided into two distinct sections: the common database and the inventory databases. The common database contains all the tables and static entries that are used for the configuration, classification and referencing of the inventories and inventory data, more specifically:
The inventory properties;
The tree, bamboo, palm, rattan and tree fern species data (botanical and official common names, botanical families, plant types), including the wood specific gravity of the trees;
The geographical-political subdivisions (names of Barangays, Cities and Municipalities, Provinces and Regions) following the Philippine Standard Geographic Code (PSGC);
All used classification systems (terrain, land classification, the land cover according to the 2010 NAMRIA land cover map, forest type and tree crown cover classes);
The Philippine regional volume equations for Dipterocarps and Non-Dipterocarps (DENR 2014);
The allometric equations for the biomass estimation as described in the estimation design (Lennertz et al. 2017);
The global gridded layer of the environmental variable E measuring stress prepared by Chave et al. (2014), required for the above-ground biomass (AGB) estimation.
The inventory databases (one per inventory) contain all the data observed and measured by the inventories, more specifically:
The Sample Point data;
The associated nested plots data;
The list of inventory teammates;
The trees and Standing Dead Wood (SDW) data;
The Lying Dead Wood (LDW) data.
Currently, the FRA Database System Application works in standalone modus only, where the computer acts simultaneously as server and as client using a local database. However, the application can easily be upgraded to work in a networked environment with a remote database.

2. Application Startup and Initialization To start the FRA Database System Application, double-click on the icon on the desktop or launch the application from the MS Windows Start menu.
2.1 Login
Choose the type of Account from the drop down list (User or Administrator) (see Figure 1). Enter the appropriate Password. Choose the Database (Local database; the connection to a remote database in a networked environment has not been implemented yet).
Click the Connection button to proceed. The application will initialize (see Figure 2).

2.2 Initialization
During the first start of the FRA Database System Application, or if a problem occurs during initialization (corrupted data), the system halts and a popup window appears (see Figure 3). The
application contains a default common database that will be automatically restored. Click the OK
button to proceed; the default common database is restored and the application restarts.

3. User Interface The main functionalities of the application, grouped into four categories (File, Data, Analysis and Help), are accessible from the application menu on top of the application window. The application toolbar (see Figure 4) right below provides quick access to the following functionalities:

Save all editing made in the database;
With Administrator rights, create a new inventory (see Chapter 4.1);
Create a new Sampling Unit (see Chapter 5.2);
Open a window to see (with Administrator rights to edit) the inventory teammates (see Chapter 0);
Open a window to query (with Administrator rights to edit) the tree, bamboo, palm, rattan, tree fern species names and related information (see Chapter 7.1);
Perform an analysis to calculate detailed results (see Chapter 8.3);
Perform an analysis to calculate summary results (see Chapter 8.4);
Perform an analysis to calculate detailed living biomass results (see Chapter 8.5);
Perform an analysis to calculate detailed species diversity results (see Chapter 8.6);
Perform an analysis to calculate detailed species abundance results (see Chapter 8.7);
Calculate detailed statistical parameters of the analyses (see Chapter 8.8);
Perform a frequency distribution analysis of the site variables (see Chapter 8.9).
The user interface is divided into three window panes (see Figure 5):
The BROWSER pane to the left shows the list of inventories and the sampling units;
The CONTENT pane up right is used to display or edit data;
The CONSOLE pane down right is used for communication and reports. It notably shows the windows currently open in the CONTENT pane.
The panes can be resized with the mouse when the cursor changes to a two-headed arrow.

4. Inventories The Inventories browser tab displays a tree view with all available inventories.
Double-click on one inventory to activate it (to open the inventory properties) or right-click on one inventory to access from a popup menu the management operations (such as: Activate, Properties, Backup inventory, Restore inventory, Delete inventory, Export to Excel).
4.1 Create New Inventory
Select the « File > Inventories > Create new » item in the application menu (see Figure 6) or use the
button in the application toolbar. The inventory properties appear in the content pane (see Figure 7). Fill in the inventory properties (see Chapter 4.2) and click the Apply button to proceed.
The inventory database will be created and initialized. Click the save button to make the editing permanent. The inventory must be activated to work on it (see Chapter 4.3).

4.2 Inventory Properties
The inventory properties define all the inventory parameters; the inventory code and database name must be unique.

The Sampling properties tab (see Figure 7) contains the sub-plot radii values according to the
inventory design.
The Authorized LGUs tab (see Figure 8) defines all the allowed LGUs for the inventory, to expedite
the encoding by limiting the drop down lists of LGUs to those effectively covered by the inventory. The
selection should proceed from the Regions ( ) through the Provinces ( ) to the Cities ( ) and
Municipalities ( ).The column "Active" defines if an LGU is active ( ) or not ( ). The filtering field allows context-sensitive filtering of the LGUs. The search field helps to find LGUs by their names or national codes. Once an inventory is created, it is no longer possible to edit the database name.

4.3 Activate Inventory
All data editing (such as adding a new sampling unit, editing the data of a sampling unit, deleting a sampling unit) and analysis operations are performed on the active inventory. Only one inventory can be active at a time. Select the « File > Inventories > "inventory name" > Activate » item in the
application menu, or use the right-click popup menu directly in the Inventories tree-view (see Figure
9) to activate a specific inventory. The application restarts and loads all encoded sampling units of the active inventory.

4.4 Backup Inventory
Select the « File > Inventories > "inventory name" > Backup inventory » item in the application
menu, or use the right-click popup menu directly in the Inventories tree-view (see Figure 10) to
create a backup copy of a specific inventory. The application prompts to select or enter a backup file name (the default file name extension is « .bck »), and creates the backup with the inventory table structure and content in the chosen subdirectory. While encoding inventory data, it is wise to regularly create and archive backup copies on external storage media, reflecting in the file name the inventory name and the date of the backup creation.

4.5 Restore Inventory
Select the « File > Inventories > "inventory name" > Restore inventory » item in the application
menu, or use the right-click popup menu directly in the Inventories tree-view (see Figure 11) to
restore the data of a specific inventory from a backup file. The application warns that the data of the inventory to be restored will be deleted and replaced with the data of the backup file, prompts to select a backup file, and imports the data from the selected backup file into the inventory to be restored.

4.6 Delete Inventory
Select the « File > Inventories > "inventory name" > Delete inventory » item in the application
menu, or use the right-click popup menu directly in the Inventories tree-view (see Figure 12) to delete
a specific inventory. The deletion is irreversible.

4.7 Export to MS Excel
Select the « File > Inventories > "inventory name" > Export to Excel » item in the application
menu, or use the right-click popup menu directly in the Inventories tree-view (see Figure 13) to
export the inventory data and the associated common database data into a MICROSOFT Excel workbook. The application prompts to select or enter a workbook file name.

5. Sampling Units The Sampling Units browser tab displays a tree view with all available sampling units (SUs) of the
active inventory. Double-click on one SU to open its properties or right-click on one SU to access from a popup menu the management operations (such as the sample point or nested plots properties, nested plot sketch, print sampling unit data or nested plot sketch to PDF, detailed results, summary results, living biomass results, species diversity, species abundance, statistics, frequency distribution of site variables or delete sampling unit[s]; see Figure 14).

5.1 Sampling Units Tree View
The Sampling Units tree view displays all available SUs of the active inventory. By default, the SUs
are sorted alphabetically. An icon in front of the SU displays the integrity status of the SU data:
Integrity check passed;
Integrity check failed (due to missing or incoherent data).
The Sampling Units browser tab features a toolbar with buttons offering the following options:
to display the SUs grouped by Provinces;
to display the SUs grouped by Cities and/or Municipalities;
to create a GOOGLE Earth .kml file with the location of the SUs (if installed, GOOGLE Earth starts automatically);
a search field to filter the SUs by a specific tree, bamboo, palm, rattan and tree fern species
name; pressing the Enter key or clicking the button activates the filter, clicking the
button deactivates the filter.
Pressing the Ctrl key allows to extend the selection to several SUs.

5.2 New Sampling Unit
Select the « File > New Sampling Unit » item in the application menu (see Figure 15) or use the button in the application toolbar to create a new (empty) SU.

Names of referenced tree, bamboo, palm, rattan and tree fern species may be entered with the assistance of the species database (see Chapter 7.1). The species reference table can be looked-up:
quickly by typing into the species name field the first characters of the official common name (the drop-down lists shortens to the entries corresponding to the entered expression), or
comprehensively by querying and/or filtering the species reference table for official common or
scientific names after clicking the search button .
Referenced species1 are prefixed with the icon; unreferenced species with the icon. Linking of unreferenced species to referenced species (e.g. after their identification, after completion of the species database, or to delete duplicates and revert to a uniform spelling of a given species) is explained in Chapter 7.1.2.

One at a time or several (if selected) from the Sampling Units tree view pane (see
Chapter 5.1) by selecting the « Delete Sampling Unit(s) » option from the popup menu (see Figure 14) opened through a right click; or
One at a time from the sample point information form (see Chapter 5.3) by clicking the Delete button near the lower left corner of the window (see Figure 16).
5.6 Print Sampling Unit(s) to PDF
Sampling unit(s) can be printed to PDF:
One at a time or several (if selected) from the Sampling Units tree view pane (see
Chapter 5.1) by selecting the « Delete Sampling Unit(s) » option from the popup menu (see Figure 14) opened through a right click; or
one at a time from the sample point information form (see Chapter 5.3) by clicking the
Print as PDF button near the lower left corner of the window (see Figure 16).
If installed, the PDF viewer (e.g. ADOBE Reader) starts automatically. The layout of the PDF reports (an example is shown in Appendix 2) is very similar to the one of the field data forms (see Appendix 1), in order to facilitate the visual comparison of the field and encoded data. Data items which failed to pass the integrity checks are highlighted in red color, those with integrity check warnings are highlighted in orange color.
5.7 Print Sketch Map of Live Trees and Standing Dead Wood to PDF
A sketch map showing the location of the live trees and standing dead wood within each of the four nested plots per SU, followed by four tables with the corresponding live tree and standing dead wood
data, can be printed to PDF from the Sampling Units tree view pane (see Chapter 5.1) by selecting
the « Print nested plots sketch » option from the popup menu (see Figure 14) opened through a right click on a SU. If installed, the PDF viewer (e.g. ADOBE Reader) starts automatically. An example of such a sketch map, useful for control and re-measurements, is shown in Appendix 3.

7. Common Database The common database contains referential entries used for the configuration, classification and referencing of the inventories and inventory data (see Chapter 1). It can only be updated, restored or edited with Administrator rights. Users may backup the common database and query (but not edit) selected tables, notably with the data pertaining to the tree, bamboo, palm, rattan and tree fern species, and to the LGUs.
7.1 Species Database
Select the « Data > Species » item in the application menu (see Figure 30) or use the button in the toolbar to open a window displaying the tree, bamboo, palm, rattan and tree fern species names and related information.

7.1.1 Referenced Species

7.1.2 Unreferenced Species
Select the "Unreferenced" entry from the filtering field in the toolbar on the top of the window (see Figure 32) to display the list of unreferenced species1. The list of unreferenced species is compiled from the active inventory. When a species referred to in the inventory (typically by its local name only) is not stored in the species database, its vernacular name is added to the list of unreferenced species (multiple entries with the same vernacular name are grouped).

7.1.3 Linking Unreferenced to Referenced Species
Once the official common name, the scientific name, the plant type, the botanical family and, for trees, the wood specific gravity of an unreferenced species have been determined and the corresponding
data encoded into the species database, clicking on the link button to its left opens a specimen search window in the referenced species database (see Figure 33) where the corresponding species
may be selected and linked with the unreferenced species by clicking the select button. All concerned live trees and standing dead wood in the active inventory will be updated, replacing the name of the unreferenced species with the name of the linked referenced species.

7.1.4 Species Occurrence
Clicking in the species database window to the left of a species on the occurrence button produces a list of all the occurrences of that species in the active inventory, providing the code of the nested plot, the UTM coordinates of the plot center, the scientific and the vernacular name of the species, and the measured DBH or DAB (see Figure 34).
Clicking the button in the toolbar creates a GOOGLE Earth .kml file with the location of the SUs. If installed, GOOGLE Earth starts automatically and displays the location of the SUs (see Figure 35).

7.2 LGU Database
Select one of the « Data > Local Government Units > … » items (Regions, Provinces, Cities or Municipalities, Barangays or Syntheses) in the application menu (see Figure 36) to open a window displaying the LGU names and related information, The LGU database window (see Figure 37) opens and shows the list of the LGUs, following the PSGC as of December 31st, 2016. On the top of the window, a toolbar with buttons offers the following features:
To switch to the table with the Regions;
To switch to the table with the Provinces;
To switch to the table with the Cities;
To switch to the table with the Municipalities;
To switch to the table with the Barangays;
A filtering field to filter the LGU table by LGUs of the next higher category;
A search filed to filter by a specific name or expression of at least three characters (clicking the
button activates the filter, clicking the button deactivates the filter).
With Administrator rights, the editing of LGU data can be done directly in the table. Click the Apply
and buttons to save any modification. Adding and/or deleting LGUs is not permitted.

7.3 2010 Land and Forest Cover Classes
With Administrator rights, select the « Data > 2010 Land / Forest Cover » item in the application menu (see Figure 38) to open a window displaying the land and forest cover classes according to the NAMRIA classification. The 2010 land and forest cover classes table (see Figure 39) opens and shows the list of the corresponding classes. The editing of the 2010 land and forest cover classes data can be done directly in the table. On the top of the window, a toolbar with buttons offers the following options:

7.9.1 Backup Common Database
Select the « Help > Backup common database » item in the application menu (see Figure 50) to create a backup copy of the common database. The application prompts to select or enter a backup file name (the default file name extension is « .cmn »), and creates the backup with the complete common database table structure and content in the chosen subdirectory.

7.9.2 Restore Common Database
Select the « Help > Restore common database » item in the application menu (see Figure 51) to restore the common database from a backup file. The application warns that the current common database will be deleted and replaced with the content of the backup file, prompts to select a backup file name, and replaces the current common database with the one from the backup. Caution: Prior to restoring the common database, backups of all inventories should be created to be able to restore these inventories if needed.

7.9.3 Update Common Database
Select the « Help > Update common database » item in the application menu (see Figure 52) to update the common database from a backup file. Updating is different from restoring: Instead of replacing the current common database, updating merges the current common database with eventual new entries found in the backup file (while duplicate entries will be ignored). Updating is typically used to merge species references that have been added to the common database on another site where the FRA Database System application is being used. The application warns that the current common database will be updated with entries of the common database of the backup file, prompts to select a backup file name, and completes the common database with eventual new entries from the backup.

8. Analyses The analysis framework provides seven types of analyses of the active inventory:
Detailed results (see Chapter 8.3);
Summary results (see Chapter 8.4);
Living biomass results (see Chapter 8.5);
Species diversity results (see Chapter 8.6);
Species abundance results (see Chapter 8.7);
Statistics (see Chapter 8.8);
Site variables (see Chapter 8.9).
A context-sensitive toolbar (see Chapter 8.1) provides quick access to a range of options and functionalities without having to quit the analysis framework. All analyses are dynamically calculated in real-time from the detailed inventory database entries. By default, the calculations are based on the complete set of measurements and observations of the active inventory, excluding the data from the re-measured control SUs. Chapter 8.2 explains how to modify the scope of the analyses.
8.1 Analyses Toolbar
The context-sensitive analyses toolbar (see Figure 54) provides quick access to the following options and functionalities without having to quit the analysis framework:

8.2 Scope of Analyses
By default, the scope of an analysis encompasses all the SUs (except the re-measured [control] SUs) of the active inventory. For all types of analyses except site variables (see Chapter 8.9 for the extended scope of frequency distribution analyses), the scope may be defined (see Figure 55) by setting filters based on Sample Point properties:
type of SU: measurement or re-measurement;
Region;
Province;
Municipality;
2010 land and forest cover according to NAMRIA;
Land cover based on the field observations;
Forest type based on the field observations;
Tree crown cover based on the field observations.
Alternatively, the scope may be defined arbitrarily, by setting and/or deleting checkmarks in front of the SUs to be included in the calculations one by one. Short-cuts help to select all SUs or none. According to the defined scope, the results are updated in real-time. The scope pane (which may be
shown or hidden by clicking the icon) displays the number of SUs and the number of different tree, bamboo, palm, rattan and tree fern species (including unreferenced species1 and undetermined species; species richness [see Chapter 8.6] does not include unreferenced species) in the current selection, the filter settings and the selected SUs (not selected SUs appear without checkmarks in grey font).

In the default array of tables, the rows display the SUs. These default tables hence provide the frequency distribution of sample points (if applicable) and nested plot centers by one classification criterion at a time. Instead of the SUs, any of the classification criteria referred to above may be selected in the extended cross-tabulation scope pane to be displayed in rows (see Figure 75). In such way, it becomes possible to cross-tabulate any two classification criteria, and analyze the frequency distribution of the sample points (if applicable) and nested plot centers by two classification criteria (see Figure 74).
