TEC Priority Thematic Areas

Equity and IWRM

Climate change, food and water security nexus

Transboundary cooperation

Integrated urban water management

Water security

The economics of water security

Sarah Carriger
Since Water Security is an overarching theme and presumably informs everything you may want to either put it first or take it out
Page 7: Technical Committee Chair's report by Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi - CP meeting Day 1

TEC Approach

3 key drivers:

Substantive: understanding TEC thematic areas through the prism of water security – contributing substantive clarity

Procedural: building strong RWPs & CWPs across the network – providing operational guidance

Knowledge Chain: harvesting and sharing knowledge across the network – RWPs/CWPs + KPs

Page 8: Technical Committee Chair's report by Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi - CP meeting Day 1

Towards a common operational methodology:

Highlights from 2011…

Sarah Carriger
I set it up as highlights - that way you don't have to be comprehensive & don't have to mention every theme
Page 11: Technical Committee Chair's report by Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi - CP meeting Day 1

Equity Theme

Publication of Background Paper: Brings greater clarity to the

concept of “social equity” in the context of water

Provides a framework for considering the multiple dimensions of equity in water resources development and management

Page 12: Technical Committee Chair's report by Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi - CP meeting Day 1

Equity – Some Key Messages Social equity in water management is primarily about

people, not water.

It is not enough to consider only policies and processes within the water sector, but also the combined effects of these with other policies in other sectors and national development and economic policies.

Although tradeoffs are sometimes required between the goals of social equity and economic efficiency, well designed policies that look at benefits and costs holistically can often advance both goals.

Climate Change, Water & Food Security Joint workshop with IWMI on Climate Change, Food and

Water Security in South Asia held 24-25 February 2011 Workshop on Regional Approaches to

Food and Water Security in the Face of Climate Challenges in Southern & Eastern Africa held 23‐24 May 2011

High-level conference held at Chatham House 14-15 June; under discussion: joint research programme with Dundee Univ & Chatham House targeted at unpacking and identifying key issues related to water security and within water/energy/food nexus

Sarah Carriger
Moved this here because it didn't seem to go with Transboundary although Dundee is a partner...But not really clear to me what the conference was about and if it is connected with joint research programme. Also is it indeed being discussed? What is the situation?
Page 14: Technical Committee Chair's report by Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi - CP meeting Day 1

South Asia workshop Brought together 75 policy makers, practitioners and

researchers from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the international community

Outcomes: Planning Commissions of India and Pakistan resolved to

develop a collaborative work plan & seek financial support to set it in motion

Synthesis available at www.gwp.org Follow-up: Support the establishment of a platform on integrated

drought and flood monitoring and forecasting building on existing country expertise and encouraging regional cooperation

Southern & Eastern Africa workshop Organised by: Development Bank of Southern Africa, GWP, IWMI, and

the South African National Planning Commission with the support of African Development Bank, the EAC, and SADC

Brought together 100 practitioners, policy makers, researchers, and representatives from private sector, financial institutions, regional bodies such as NEPAD and CAADP and international organisations such as FAO and IHA

Outcomes: Raised the profile of regional cooperation for development on

South Africa’s agenda Identified specific opportunities in energy and water Provided groundwork for greater regional collaboration, particularly

cooperative strategies with the private sector to improve lives and livelihoods as well as grow products and profits

Transboundary Cooperation

Developing portfolio of activities: Set-up of GWP/ Dundee Knowledge Chain

Scholarship Programme on International Water Law – proposed 30 scholarships awarded annually over 5 years = 150 capacity enhanced participants across the GWP network

First round of students (out of 87 applicants) accepted & trained

Sarah Carriger
This is correct right? The first batch of students already graduated from the programme?
Sarah Carriger
Confirm that KC does indeed stand for Knowledge Chain
Page 17: Technical Committee Chair's report by Dr Mohamed Ait-Kadi - CP meeting Day 1

Transboundary Cooperation
