August 1, 2006 TO: Kathleen Bennett TAPPI Nominating Committee Chair FROM: Harry T. Cullinan Alabama Center for Paper and Bioresource Engineering 242 Ross Hall Auburn University, AL 36849 Physical Address: 0325 Haley Center Phone: 334-844-2016 FAX: 334-844-2045 Email: [email protected] SUBJECT: Gunnar Nicholson Gold Medal Nomination of Richard J. Kerekes Recommendation Letter Dick Kerekes has compiled a distinguished record as an educator and researcher in service to the pulp and paper industry. I have known Dick for many years and have the highest regard for him and his work. Dick played a major role in the establishment of Paprican's west coast operation at UBC. Under his leadership this endeavor has been highly successful, widely recognized as one of the premier pulp and paper research centers in the world. Dick's research efforts span a number of decades and have been concentrated in the areas of pulp refining and paper formation. His work has always been characterized as a unique combination of elegant engineering analysis and meaningful practical application. His "C Factor Theory", quantifying the energy imparted to fibers during refiner bar crossings, was a major advance in our understanding of refining of chemical pulps and is broadly in use today resulting in considerable energy savings. His research on formation focuses on the hydrodynamics of twin wire formers and its effect on paper properties. Although this work is based on fundamental principles of fluid mechanics, the very useful practical result is a new method of describing the formation potential of pulp which is of great value to papermakers optimizing the match between their pulps and their paper machines. I believe that Dick Kerekes deserves serious consideration for the Nicholson Gold Medal.
