Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation you should be able to:

• Describe TechCrete and its properties

• Understand the purpose of TechCrete

• Know when and where to use TechCrete

• Recognize the benefits of TechCrete

What is TechCrete?

4

TechCrete is gray in color and aesthetically suitable for all concrete

pavements. It’s used for sealing wide cracks and joints, and repairing a large

variety of pavement distresses in portland cement concrete pavement

(PCCP) and asphalt concrete pavement.

TechCrete is the most advanced

flexible concrete solution for highway

and airport pavement rehabilitation!

TechCrete Composition

5

Binder- Polymer-modified resin.

Polymers and oils are used to better

resist shoving and cracking.

Aggregate – Designed to provide mass and stability for

compression resistance and to meet load bearing

requirements, while still allowing the material to flow.

TechCrete Product Comparison

TechCrete-R

TC-R contains smaller aggregate

than TC-TBR and is used in shallow

repairs where neat edge feathering

is required.

TC-R is designed to treat most

distresses up to ¾ in (20 mm) deep.

TechCrete Product Comparison

TechCrete-TBR

TC-TBR contains larger aggregate

than TC-R and is used in larger and

deeper repairs.

TC-TBR is designed to treat most

distresses from 1 ½ to 8 in (20 to

200 mm) deep.

TechCrete Fibre Mastic

TC-FM without structural aggregate

contains smaller aggregate similar

to TC-R and is used in shallow

repairs where neat edge feathering

is required.

TC-FM with structural aggregate

contains larger aggregate similar to

TC-TBR and is used in larger and

deeper repairs.

TC-FM is designed to treat most

distresses from ¾ to 8 in (20 to 200

mm) deep.

Installation

Installation - Equipment

20

Use only an indirectly-

heated melter with sufficient

agitation such as the Crafco

Patcher I, Crafco Patcher II,

or other approved melter.

If appropriate melters are not used,

application difficulties, pump system

damage, and extreme wear can

result!!

Installation - Preparation

Use suitable equipment to mill or remove the defective pavement

Installation - Preparation

22

Page 23: TechCrete and ASR Repairs

23

• Only apply TechCrete to clean, sound, dry surfaces.

• Large repair surfaces must be blown clear with

clean, dry, oil-free compressed air.

• Clean and dry the repair area with a hot air lance.

Installation - Preparation

Page 24: TechCrete and ASR Repairs

Installation - Preparation

24

If the pavement temperature is less than 40°F (4°C), it can be warmed with a

torch or heat lance. Heating the pavement will also remove moisture, assuring a

dry surface.

Ensure the pavement temperature exceeds

40F (4C) during application.

Page 25: TechCrete and ASR Repairs

25

• Mask the perimeter of the repair area with fabric

tape to ensure no excess material will be on the

surface of the pavement.

• Prime the entire repair area including side and

bottom surfaces, using a brush or spray applicator.

• Allow the primer to dry to the touch before applying

TechCrete.

Installation - Preparation

Primer must be re-applied if TechCrete is installed

more than 24 hours after priming.

Page 26: TechCrete and ASR Repairs

Installation - Application

The temperature of TechCrete should be between 375°F (190°C) and a

maximum of 400°F (204°C) prior to applying to the pavement

Best practice is use a heat

gun to measure material

temperature.

26

Page 27: TechCrete and ASR Repairs

Installation - Application

Gravity feed the heated TechCrete directly into the repair area OR pour into a

Crafco TechCrete Bucket and then immediately pour into the repair area.

27

Page 28: TechCrete and ASR Repairs

Deep repairs need to be installed in multiple

lifts (layers). Each layer should not exceed

2 inches (50 mm) thickness.

Allow TechCrete to cool to 200°F (93°C) or

less, between each lift.

Installation - Application

Immediately following application, smooth

product to the desired level using a

straight metal screed or hot iron.

Allow bubbles to expel from

the applied material.

31

While material is still hot, cover

entire repair area with surface

aggregate.The surfacing aggregate adds

skid resistance, UV protection

and aesthetic value.

Pavement is ready for traffic in

1.5 to 3 hours depending upon

repair depth and air

temperatures.
